Relaxed and unstuffy, the only thing Allium is serious about is great food, wonderful wines and genuinely warm hospitality.
This classic menu with a modern twist has delighted guests and the nation's leading food critics alike, with The Observer’s Jay Rayner praising it for being “worth the visit to Bath” alone.

Fantastic service all around couldn’t fault a thing
Great food and service. However, the restaurant is in a transition and the menus could be more imaginative. The toilets were messy and dirty and clearly were not being inspected and cleaned sufficiently often.
Excellent food, very good service and really good value for money. Saturday lunch time and the place was nearly empty, such a shame !
Amazing food , good service but lacks atmosphere!
Absolutely exquisite food in a tranquil
setting. We were impressed by the fresh ingredients, vivid colors, and imaginative presentation. Our two course meal for two with wine was 57 GBP so it was a super value as well. Highly recommend.
Food not as good as it appeared on the website. Service slow. However staff are very friendly and they have a separate menu for people who have food allergies/eating disorders.
We had a wonderful time. Great for catching up. The staff were attentive and friendly. The hotel is superbly located with an exciting collection of art. We were very happy with the choice of food on the menu. It was a wonderful evening. The bar staff even helped us charge our phones later on in the evening. Well worth a visit!
Amazing food! Really good and friendly service! Thank you.
Hadn’t realised that Allium had changed hands and lost, it’s very wonderful, Michelin starred chef, Chris Staines a few months ago. That does explain the slightly below par food and slower service. Such a shame as we have always enjoyed fabulous dining experiences there in the past. We waited 20 minutes in the bar for our drinks order to arrive - it wasn't overly busy, although I appreciate the bar was dealing with outside guests & restaurant drinks orders - but that's a regular Saturday night in Bath. Not mad on the new restaurant decor and furniture - looks a bit down market from what was there before - disappointing.
special occasion really quite disappointing. Set menu small portions as always but quality of starter and dessert particularly poor. Style over substance Moreover restaurant informed of a 21st birthday on booking, over phone and also the waitress asked if we were out for any special reason ... so the least that the restaurant could have done was put a candle in her dessert. Service quite ad hoc. Gluten free options poor. Unable to explain why cheese wax not a gf option.
Possibly the worst food I’ve had anywhere. Service same. Avoid.
Another fabulous work dinner here. The food never fails to impress, fancy and healthy and portions tailored to multiple courses. We all went for the prix fixe early bird meal, and enjoyed the complexity that retained clarity of individual flavours and healthy ingredients. The waiter was able to offer good recommendations on wine, and service was attentive but unobtrusive.
Disappointed overall - staff are friendly but still learning the job; food was okay - had expected better given write-ups. Overall a 2 star rating.
Small portions, relatively expenses food and drinks. Prices have gone up, but quality has deteriorated. Overall, value for money poor. I have been a regular visitor and was always pleased but this time very disappointed.
Lovely lunch experience, service was excellent, food top quality freshly prepared and well presented, pretty authentic environment we would eat here again
The staff were very friendly. However, there was a bit of a wait between courses which was on the verge of unacceptable. The friendliness of the staff seemed to make up for this part of the service.
The food was nice but not exceptional and seemed a tad expensive for the portion and quality. However, the presentation was very good.
Overall, we had a good experience there and they gave me a small birthday dessert at the end of the meal. There was no one singing etc just a kind word from the waitress.
Definitely, worth a visit for a special occasion when you don’t mind spending a bit extra for a meal.
The initial impression was good , the appearance of restaurant was quite chic and we were greeted with a smile and given a nice table by the open door. Unfortunately, the food didn't quite live up to the initial impression. My husband's chicken was bland and tasteless and my mushroom pasta contained few mushrooms. Not good value for money.
Bottomless Prosecco Sunday brunch was excellent value with great choice of food, hot and cold. Staff were very efficient and friendly without being overbearing.
I'll start by saying a 5 year-old Jay Rayner review no longer bears resemblance to the reality of dining here. It's verging on misleading on the OT page.
We dined on a Saturday evening, and it was clear the staff had been overwhelmed throughout the day. Weather had been good.
On arrival at the front entrance, there was a sign blocking the doorway saying 'Feeling peckish? fancy a drink?' -and redirecting you to the ArtBar next door. We eventually found a reception desk, where the helpful young lady was sorting another non-restaurant issue for another guy. We were eventually directed into the ArtBar, which was an entertaining watch for most. It was clear the one guy who knew what he was doing was having to train the others on-job. Eventually we got our bottle of Champagne as requested, with one champagne flute and another white wine tasting glass. This randomness set the tone for the evening really. There was uncertainty about whether we were to order food there at the bar, or through in the restaurant.
We ordered food and were eventually seated in the quiet restaurant about 35 mins after entering the establishment.
Service in the restaurant by the young lady dealing with our table was friendly and efficient, though it was clear that the burden of service was falling on a few individuals. The doorway with the sign that we had not used earlier was entertaining as it opened straight into the dining area. Most people, like us, were confused. None of the staff seemed to click.
My partner thoroughly enjoyed her Dorset Crab Salad followed by the Pan-Fried John Dory
I started with the Guineafowl with Ham-hock and celeriac terrine, though was disappointed that the Guineafowl was integrated into the terrine, making the portion size very small for 8.50. My confit duck leg was good, but the cherry jus promised wasn't there. It was a very salty jus which didn't have any of the sweetness required or expected.
In summary, not as good as trailed. Maybe an off-day.
Nice food well cooked and served by efficient friendly staff. Menu would benefit from a little more choice possibly through the specials route.
Really lovely brunch with more food than we could possibly eat. Service from one of the waiters was exceptional, really above and beyond although all waiting staff were great. Lovely atmosphere and the kids loved it too.
All four of my party had different meals, each was wholly enjoyed. The waiters were attentive but not intrusive. The sommelier was very good and when we had chosen our wine, between two choices, he brought a taster of the other for comparison; a lovely touch. Overall a great evening, I will be going back.
We arrived early for our table and were shown straight through. Service was efficient and unobtrusive. I had the Guinea Fowl Terrine which was very good, my partner had the Asparagus and Duck Egg which she thoroughly enjoyed. We followed this with John Dory for me (a fish one does not see enough of in my opinion) and the Tagliatelle. Both again very good, If I had to be ultra critical (which is my want!!) I would say the fish was a bit overcooked and the Veloute was quite salty. Other than that it was one of the best meals we have had for a long time. All the food was accompanied by a quite outstanding White Wine from Languedoc-Rousillon. All in all a very pleasant evening with good food and wine. I would highly recommend to anyone visiting Bath!
Amazing food, amazing cocktails good for dates, nothing bad about the restaurant
A wonderful evening from start to finish. We would definitely return.
We were visiting Bath for the Easter weekend and we had seen some good reviews. The drinks in the bar first and most of the food was amazing, a real find for foodies. The things that don't get it 5 stars all round are - some slightly weird decor - the glasses hung from the ceiling and the decanter lights were brilliant, but the mustard colours and the drapey curtains - odd. All of our food was delicious, apart from the polenta which was a bit disappointing - for 'herby polenta' it seemed to lack herbs and was under seasoned and flavourless. Everything else amazing and top notch.
Based on research and recent Tripadvisor recommendations I was expecting good things from Alium but left feeling somewhat disappointed overall and unlikely to visit again. My partners Chickory Tart starter had to be sent back for missing a key and vital ingredient and even when it came back it did not taste especially good nor seem a well thought out dish. The Venison main course was ok without being exceptional and the side dish of Sprouting Brocolli in a ginger soy and ginger dressing arrived minus the promised dressing but rather just buttered. Not good value for money and lacking in attention to detail, The Alium needs to up its game. This is a shame as it has the makings of a nice restaurant in a good location.
The nibbles in the bar are utterly delicious. We had hummus and flat bread, scotch quail's egg and chicken liver parfait. Really excellent. We then had main courses in the restaurant which were very good. It was quite busy and had atmosphere, but personally I prefer the bar area.
Food was good but the place was soulless. Would go elsewhere if in the area again.
food was brilliant but the seats where like garden chairs, it was all i could falt
A great special dinner with a taster menu. Cocktails before were wonderful and a great bar to relax in afterwards
Service was very good;no issues.Food very good although portion sizes were somewhat small-nonetheless food very good. Will return and will be better prepared next time.
Entirely empty but still took a fair time for set menu food to arrive. Pretty overcooked main which was dissapointing. Overpriced wine.
We ate here 5 years ago and weren’t hugely impressed but thought we should give it another go. The food wasn’t great - rump steak cooked in sous vide and arrived grey and tasting a bit mushy. The waiter did offer to send it back to be fair but we told him not to bother - how could any chef send steak out that colour? Service was good but the food is vastly overpriced and there’s far better to be had in central Bath.
Wonderful experience! Amazing food. Not many vegan options.
Food was good but rather overpriced - halibut portion very small. French beans side seemed like frozen ones just boiled/microwaved and thrown in a dish. Music was unsuitable for evening dining and too loud (though waiter did respond to request to turn it down a little). Would not go again. There's plenty of better value restaurants in Bath.
Food was good, but nothing exceptional. Ambience is dated and needs a refresh, lacks atmosphere, which is so important for first and lasting impressions.
We had a very nice lunch. Food was tasty. Service was excellent, friendly and efficient. Decor needs a bit of attention, it's looking a bit tired and the artwork on the walls is odd! Doesn't fit the place at all.
Other than that - great.
Enjoyed a great meal here
Staff very friendly and helpful. Foid was delicious and not too pricey Would definitely recommend yo anyone visiting Bath and wanting a change from the chain restaurants
Food was very good. Delicious and beautifully presented. Service top notch. Surroundings let it down. Really could do with major revamp to attract diners.
