Alston Bar & Beef - Manchester
To top it off, Alston has a large selection of gins available in each of their two bars, as well as a number of their own gin infusions made on site using a cold compound process, each individually garnished and served to perfection.

Lovely atmosphere. Food was fantastic. Staff very helpful and friendly. The gin choice was fantastic.
They automatically put a 12.5% tip on the bill, which is a bit cheeky.
The roast beef was excellent, although a bit pricey at £18. Service and atmosphere are definitely lacking.
Hi I’ve been to Alston around 5 times before in the evening so when my system ask me to go shopping and a bit of a Sunday lunch I suggested Alston , food was love but wasn’t quite what I was expecting , I’m still going to come in the evening but it’s not my kind of Sunday dinner , we had the place to ourselves the whole time and was very confused when we didn’t get a extra we ordered and took ages after asking fir bill to be brought over , all in all I’d tell my friends to come of a evening rather than lunch .
Best steak we have ever had! We tried the chateaubriand and it was exceptional.
Great food but lacked atmosphere..
Excellent restaurant hidden away in the corn exchange, the restaurant is near the cathedral. The food was excellent as was the service. Only issue, not many vegetarian options!
First time visitors and we throughly enjoyed it! The food was amazing, great service and great value. 2 for £10 cocktails rounded off our visit, we’ll be back!
This is our 3rd time at this restaurant and it has always been very good value.
We start in the cosy bar to taste the wide selection of gins before going into the restaurant.
Always had very good service.
Brilliant service and food. Gluten free Pilsner lager was a welcome surprise. Too few restaurants cater for coeliacs. Well done.
Hi PaulD, Thanks for leaving us such a great review! We're happy that we could accommodate your dietary requirements. We hope to see you again soon! Thanks, Alston MCR
We visited as staying in Manchester for a concert and birthday celebration. We had the set menu along with some sides and wine and both meals were lovely (chicken/steak) and it was nicely topped off by a pudding all served on a Happy Birthday plate. The waitress was lovely, so sorry can't remember her name but she sounded American/Canadian. Her service was excellent as she wasn't over fussy, made polite chat and always made sure our wine was topped up, a credit to you.
Hello Wendyc, Thank you for taking the time to leave us such a lovely review, will make sure to pass your comment to our colleague :) Really glad that you enjoyed your experience with us Hope to see you soon :) Thanks, AlstonMCR
Had an absolutely beautiful steak here and the sauces accompanying them were fantastic. Just wish it was a little cheaper so we could afford to visit more often x
The refurbished bar downstairs was really nice but the restaurant lacked ambience and the food was only average- would prefer to pay more and go to gaucho!
Excellent food and service but could do with nudging the volume of the music down a notch or two.
The best steak I've had in a long time. Friendly staff. Good value for money.
Fabulous steak & chips
Thai beef salad tasteless unfortunately
Prices a bit heavy
Really nice restaurant. The food and service was great. Steak cooked to perfection
Delicious, tasty meal.
The staff were very friendly.
We will definitely visit again
we have been a few times and had various different steaks, we had the butchers cut this time and 2 of the 3 pieces were a bit tough compared to usual
Food was fantastic. Myself and the wife had ribeye on the bone and a fillet steak. Not only are the steaks great they also have an amazing Gin selection. Staff amazing. Asked for advice on Gin selection and tonic. Staff very knowledgeable. I believe Alberto help with service on the night. My only complaint was we felt a little over dressed in the section we we're seated. Wife's birthday so got dressed up and set next to someone in shorts on a Saturday night.
Good for special occasions as not cheap but fabulous food. Music a little loud. Service excellent.
Excellent food, service could do with some improvement.
Great place, lovely atmosphere and food was really good, felt it was overpriced for what it was though
As good as always
Slightly hard to find if you go into the Corn Exchange to find it. (The entrance is outside). We went for lunch (Monday) and spent two hours in there and we were the only customers for the whole time. That said, it’s a lovely and stylish venue. The staff were attentive, whilst not being overly seeing as there were no other customers. The food was excellent, can’t fault any of it. We had the set menu, there were two steaks to choose from but one had sold out, the other one had a £3 surcharge which we had to pay despite the other option being unavailable. Fantastic and well thought out drinks menu. Would definitely go back, but perhaps for an evening this time.
Excellent food and service. All staff very friendly. Would highly recommend and will be returning, thankyou
Steak was very good, but the starters were a bit of a let down - virtually everything was sold out - pate was a little tasteless and chicken was only ok. Very quiet on a Friday night so ambience was a little lacking. Overall good value for the set meal but wouldn’t rush back.
Beautiful food and excellent, friendly service, can't wait to return.
Great food and friendly staff, couldn’t fault the food or service.
I was very impressed with the food absolutely lovely meal. You get what you pay for. It was very quiet when we went on Saturday 1pm lunch however I am sure in the evening it would have more of an atmosphere.
Hi there! Thanks so much for leaving us some excellent feedback, we're so happy to hear that you enjoyed your time with us and you feel our menu was great value for money. We hope to see you again soon! Alston MCR
Rang ahead to tell the staff we were running 15mins late, they were really pleasant about it and when we arrived we were made to feel really welcome and we were not rushed by the staff in anyway. The food was excellent and the overall service was too. We were the last table to leave and again we were never rushed. A truly enjoyable evening.
The butchers cut was excellent with non-classical cuts prepared expertly. Good service and a great evening overall.
I love the food here but I think given the choices in Manchester, I think the price point is expensive for what you get, £33 for a fillet steak without a side is high. Ambience is average and I think it needs to have some music or DJ to improve it. Service is average, we had to go to the bar to ask for drinks and with competition such as the Ivy where they really focus on service, I think Alston needs to think about what is going to be the thing that they want to be known for.
Food was amazing. The meal deal is great value. Service was good.
The food was lovely. Pricey but nice!
The ambiance is gorgeous and the staff ( Olivia ) was super friendly and made the service great
Order was messed up on two occasions. Food was fairly poor. Main course dishes were over-cooked, over-seasoned and definitely over-priced for what we received.
Staff were pleasant but a little too pushy in up selling extras. Nicely decorated and good ambience.
Dear Gavin We apologise for your recent poor dining experience here at Alston Bar and Beef. We pride ourselves on offering the highest quality food and service and it looks like we have fallen very short on your visit. If you would like to discuss further with myself so i can investigate more in detail, please contact me on 01618045555 or email myself at email@example.com. Kind Regards Paul
They falsely advertised a sweet menu meal for the time I booked but told me it ended at 4pm. The for was very disappointing considering the premium prices being charged. 4 quid for four success of bread, a charger for water and 12.5% automatically out on for service is annoying too. I would definitely never go back. Compared to recent meals in Hawksmoor etc, it was below average.
Good food, but small portions and overall poor value for money even on the set menu.
Steak was delicious, value for money & staff very friendly.
I have a lot to say about this restaurant so I'll start with the good. We were a party of 5, we all had steak, all the steakes were good quality and cooked as requested. The service was efficient and the staff pleasent.
Now the not so good. The restaurant has a basic stripped back look with bare walls and exposed air conditioning pipes, the music was a little too loud making conversation a little tricky. There was no ambience to speak of so a little disappointing.
Although the food was good, presentation was poor, we paid £31 for a 300g Ribeye with chips, and that was what we got, a steak on a plate with a cup of chips, no mushroom, no grilled tomato no salad garnish. If I'm paying £31 for a main course I want it to look sumptuous, I want to think I'm getting something special and this didn't have any wow factor.
One thing that I really didn't like was the 12.5% service charge, I like to decide if, when and how much to tip at a restaurant, and it's unlikely I'll ever tip that much after just good service. I had the service charge removed from the bill and left what I felt was a very generous tip under the circumstances.
Overall a disappointing experience, there are a number of restaurants in Manchester that have a better offering than Alston Bar & Beef and for a more modest price. I wish them every success, but we will be dining elsewhere in future.
Mother’s Day weekend treat , great hidden treasure of a steak house serving top quality food
