Alston Bar & Beef - Manchester
To top it off, Alston has a large selection of gins available in each of their two bars, as well as a number of their own gin infusions made on site using a cold compound process, each individually garnished and served to perfection.

Had the chateaubriand, excellent, cooked perfectly. Staff were friendly and helpful I would recommend to anyone.
Amazing food and very friendly staff
Very nice restaurant, food delicious, service a little slow, and unfortunately our first choice of wine wasn't available
Ordered a steak which cost £70, it was to share for me and my bf, it came out as 5 slices, if I could put picture up I would, shocking, didn't even taste nice I only give it one star as no star was available
From the online reviews we obviously hit a bad night, BUT our evening was spoilt by the following:
1. We were given a 90 minute slot on our table, it being a Saturday evening, but our main course did not arrive until 10minutes before this was over. By this time we had waited at least 3/4 hour since our starters had been cleared.
2. We had chosen Alston as a place to have a lovely steak, as a special and infrequent treat. The medium rare fillet, when it arrived, was cooked to at least medium (agreed by our waiter), was dry, and not very tasty. The reason I didn't ask for another was purely because the night had already been spoiled by the wait, and I just wanted to eat and leave by then.
3. We ordered 2 sides with our mains. One of them had still not arrived until after we had both finished our mains, despite a very early reminder from us.
4. For all the above (with starters and some wine) we paid £120 for 2 people. Very poor value.
5. Despite the restaurant never being full, we were given a table in the 'annexe' area, which was otherwise empty by the time our mains arrived. Whilst fine as an overflow, this area lacks any ambience, and is made worse by being able to see the soft glow of nice artwork in the main area. I would recommend making sure that you have a table in the main area, unless the restaurant is completely full all evening.Ordinarily I would not have mentioned this, but it was the final straw in a very, very disappointing evening.
I have to mention our waiter, who was obviously aware that we were pretty fed up with the inefficiency of the food preparation. He waived our service charge without prompting. We certainly would not have paid it anyway, which I have never decided in any 'good' restaurant before.
I have never written a poor online review of any restaurant or hotel before, and will also be sending this direct to the restaurant. I hope that others have better experiences; the other reviews would indicate that they do.
Lovely pre-show meal with the family. Steaks are beautiful but quite over-priced not a family meal to enjoy every week but an occasional treat better on the pocket. Think the sides a little over priced £4.50 for a spoon of mash! Nice but pricey.
Booked a pre theatre table for 5:30. Didn’t expect to wait till nearly 6:30 for any food to arrive. Clearly not a place for 3 courses. 1 course in 1.5 hours. Wouldn’t want to be there when it gets busy in the evening. Perhaps not a good option pre theatre
Lovely food but disappointed with the duck, it was tough.
Very lively, friendly venues serving excellent quality steaks and delicious food and drinks in general. Only disappointment was about the desserts which came from a very different place - almost felt like party food for children. Wish we had skipped dessert as it spoilt what had been an excellent meal, served in friendly and helpful manner.
Great from start to finish. Delicious tasty food, good gin, good wine. We ate at 3.15pm and it was a nice busy atmosphere. Ordered 2 espressos at the end, they were only lukewarm so were a disappointment right at the end plus they were a tad overpriced at £2.40 each. Really enjoyed the meal and will come back and bring friends. This was our 2nd visit.
Fantastic restaurant! Great food, lovely atmosphere and good customer service.
Absolutely fabulous, staff wonderful, food delicious- worth every penny.
Can’t praise the staff enough for their service
An overall fantastic experience from the minute we walked in. Great food and staff. Friday £50 deal was brilliant value for money. Will definitely be coming back with friends and family!
My wife and I absolutely love this restaurant. We brought two friends with us who have only sampled the delights of the downstairs bar back in Dec 2019 for our SPIRIT Xmas Party.
The food we had last night was fantastic. The Tweed Valley Flat Iron steak was cooked to perfection. My wife had Haggis Pakora as a starter and was blown by the flavour to the point she actually wanted another.
Our friends were thrilled with the ambience, the food and we all commented on how good the waiting on staff were.
You’ll always have our custom and we intend to bring more new clients for you as well!
Excellent as always, came for a works meal and we were all delighted, the steaks cooked to each of our likings and our starters had an amazing flavour. Our waitress was friendly and able to provide good suggestions. The barman talked us through their flavours of gin as well.
Great steaks and good selection of drinks. Very friendly and helpful staff. Good atmosphere a great place to eat
I've been to Alston Bar & Beef a few times now, and although the food there is great, the service is a little lacking...
We sent our orders through the day before as I had notified the restaurant we were on a tight timescale (after checking it was OK to do so), however they seemed to take longer than normal for the meals to be delivered. There were 14 people in the restaurant in total (our table was half of this total number), it took over 2 hours for all - By the end, people had to leave before the end of their meal.
Under normal circumstances with no time pressures, this would have been fine, but having specifically advised this and the whole meal taking longer than normal was frustrating.
That said, can't fault the food - just the service was on the very slow side.
Not the place to take people for business lunches despite having a great menu - there are other places in the Triangle which have as equally a great menu but would be faster in service.
I didn’t like how the waiter was pushy about leaving him
A tip.. we had a table for 3, they put an optional 12.5% service charge on the bill. He asked do I want change I said yes so I can give you the tip I desire. He took the tip anyway and when I questioned it, he pretended not to understand, with a language barrier. I would always leave a 10% tip if the service was good, I feel automatically taking 12.5% after I asked him not to is rude.
The food was excellent, very nicely presented and extremely tasty, the service was very attentive, he explained and pointed out any relevant points around the menu and answered any questions we had.
We regularly visit Manchester yet had not been to Alston's previously, but will definitly be going back.
Excellent food and service at reasonable prices. Steak cooked to perfection and the dark cherry brownies was unreal!
Absolutely loved it here, beautiful interior and wonderful friendly staff. The food was really good quality, will deffo be coming back!
The £15 early bird was to die for! Gorgeous selection of gins, amazingly tender steak and a chocolate brownie that melted in your mouth - along with exceptionally friendly service and a beautiful restaurant, we were so happy to have found it! £30, a big tip and two very happy customers!
Really nice restaurant, a bit more on the expensive side but the quality of food was good. The waiter we had was really nice and the place was run efficiently. They do put a £10 service charge on your bill so it’s a bit awkward if you don’t want to tip £10 and you have to ask them to take it off. I would still recommend this place to someone visiting Manchester!
Amazing food, fantastic January set menu. House Gin was superb! Will definitely come back again. Sure they have a service charge but our waiter Alex was very honest about it being on the bill and was happy to take it off if we wished but it was worth it!
We chose to eat at Alston because there was a special offer on for January - otherwise its a bit pricey for casual dining.
Service was good, attentive and helpful. Food (Steak) was sublime, cooked to perfection. Shame it doesn't come with any trimmings - you have to order those separately.
Wasn't much of an atmosphere as we were the only ones in the restaurant.
Would I go again - yes when they have special offers
Amazing food and atmosphere. Will definitely be visiting again.
We really enjoyed our time at the restaurant. The steak was beautifully cooked, the only improvement would have been if it had come with a vegetable in addition to the chips, for instance green beans/vine tomatoes. This would also give more value for money. I found the ambience very nice but my mother found the base on the music a little distracting. The waiter who served us was very polite and accommodating and this made the experience for us. Thank you!
Poor initial service but great food and follow up when finally someone able to take our order and look after our table, another great tasting meal. Side of battered onions really recommended.
The usual excellent food and service will be back soon
Good food, good atmosphere, friendly helpfully staff and everything from the food and decor was good ... everything you need for a good restaurant so just go and enjoy
The steak was more medium rare than medium but was quite thick.
Overall reasonable value when compared against other steak venues, although the quality not as high. Relaxed space but slow service, even though we were one of only three tables occupied. House gin was more flavour than gin; cullen skink was excellent. Would return when offers are on.
Steak wasn’t cooked to our desire
Great steak but the salmon bon bon were a little salty
We had a lovely meal with great service. Would go back again the future when back in Manchester.
The food and service were good, however, the cocktail and dessert menu was limited. Almost all cocktails were gin based, which although fashionable, is limiting to people who don’t like gin. My husband ordered a salt fashioned and it lived up to its name. Still at least it gave us a memorable evening.
Lovely bar tucked away - the steak didnt disappoint.
We went on Sunday 8th to celebrate our 10th anniversary, we had a fillet and a sirloin steak both medium rare. Meat was really good, the service as well was impeccable. Nice choice of drinks. Great value! We'll back for sure!
This is a hidden treasure. The staff and the ambience were excellent. My steak was cooked to perfection. Every recommendation from the waiter was excellent. We will definitely return
Amazing food. I’ve been to many steaks places here and abroad and this one was great.
