Dating back to the 15th Century, The Anchor Inn is a family-friendly pub in the village of Hartfield, East Sussex – best known as the home of author AA Milne.

For the hungry, our chef combines fine local foods with traditional pub fare, served alongside regional cask ales, spirits and carefully selected wines.

As well as the spacious dining area we have a vibrant front bar and a more cozy back bar alongside the restaurant and function room, which features an inglenook fireplace.

We have guest rooms available for those who want a comfortable and welcoming base for exploring our beautiful countryside.

Whether you’re joining us for a pint, a quiet meal or a family celebration, you’ll always find a warm welcome at The Anchor.

Tasty pub grub in a pleasant garden in a sunny spot. The service was a little slow & it was hard to order an extra pint but enjoyable meal out nonetheless.

Lovely safe environment with tables well spaced and toilets available without going into the pub. Pizzas were amazing and the fish and chips very good. Service a little slow but they were busy and all staff were very pleasant.

Excellent in every respect . The manager runs an excellent pub and restaurant. We had skate which was beautifully cooked and apple pear crumble with custard. The staff were attentive and the bill a very pleasant surprise. I would highly recommend this pub .

Very nice little pub. Visited at the start of January so very quite and full of locals. Very very good food, although felt a little awkward and out of place given we were the only out of town-ers.

Seated by open fire. Pub busy as a 40th in the back. Lovely to see a locals pub. Good service and both fish pie and steak and ale pie delicious. Cooked Breakfast following morning excellent. Not greasy, good quality sausages and bacon. Set us up for the day.

Quiet pub, but not much atmosphere. Food was okay but not very inspiring, wasn’t asked if we wanted any other course and had to ask for tea and coffee. Cup of tea had the tea bag left in the cup!

Just so disappointing. The main courses were very late being served due to staff miscommunication and two out of three meals were cold when they arrived. They were returned to the kitchen and to be fair the waitress apologised and refunded them but it ruined our day out with a friend who ended up not eating a main course and we didn't stay for desserts or coffee. We have since heard that another neighbour also complained about the roast too. Unfortunately this was the second unsatisfactory meal we have had there in 6 months, both times although the veg were nice, the roast beef was fatty, the Yorkshire Pudding cold and solid and the second meal inedible - the first time it was a fish curry that tasted very strange. We were particularly disappointed to have this experience a second time as it's a great local pub under relatively new ownership. The fish pie on this occasion was good and was served piping hot but to have to wait an hour for it and in the meantime for the burger and chips and the roast to be left to go cold is inexcusable. Great venue and place for a beer and snack near Ashdown Forest but we were not even offered a voucher for a meal to try again despite explaining that it was our second poor meal there. We live locally and rumours were that the pub had a new chef but if they are getting a new one, or a new sous chef or even just extra help in the kitchen that would without doubt improve the current situation then I hope it is advertised widely as we would like to support local but not with the quality of meals and service received on the last two occasions we came in and in fact to be honest for the battered fish snacks we ate in the garden in the summer twice either. The pub is lovely but there are enough good local food options to not bother going back until necessary changes are made. Disappointing.

An excellent meal readily tweaked to suit our palates and preferences. Relaxed but alert service. Beautifully maintained oak beams and roaring fire, spotlessly clean.
