All good once we got into the restaurant but we, four pensioners, were, we think, unnecessarily held up out in the cold at the entrance before someone had to come all the way down to check are booking, before allowing us in. A more streamlined system required here.
Fantastic ambience and quick helpful service. Food was good, though choice was limited.
Really good experience - good staff and food. The only suggestion would be to offer complementary refills of tea/coffee. But good value - will be back!
Food expensive for what it is - service and people were lovely.
Food was lovely, good veggie options on the afternoon tea and good setting/ location. Although the staff were lovely, we felt ignored solely because we were students and not the normal “type” of client. It made us feel very out of place and as if we weren’t welcome, and to be honest, it kind of ruined the experience. We had to wait 35 minutes for our plates to be cleared despite having made it clear we’d like them cleared about 25 minutes before that! I wouldn’t mind normally as I work in hospitality and understand things are more important than clearing plates, but it wasn’t busy and clearly tables that needed relaying ( and ones with customers that looked as if they were more likely to leave a tip) were all more important than clearing our plates which takes 3 seconds! Not sure that based on the experience I had as a young person I would return, but the food was good and as was the setting.
Friendly service nice location tasty varied cream tea
very disappointing that you did not offer a lunch menu at 13.15. won't come again unless you reinstate lunch menu
Magda, our Polish waitress, was outstanding.
She was extremely understanding of dietary restrictions and extremely kind and efficient.
Service was very good and they made a vegan version of the afternoon tea with no hesitation
Service was fantastic, and the food was really lovely. A really great experience.
Excellent quality of food, particularly the savoury options and the service was impeccable. The ambiance was good, relatively quiet, but still busy with excellent views of the Randolph Hotel and parts of central Oxford.
At first we were disappointed that only afternoon tea was available at lunchtime. But we were assured there were plenty of savoury options and there were. Really enjoyed it.
With only two other pairs in the whole restaurant and about a quarter of the normal tables removed social distancing was not the slightest problem and the large terrace door was left open through. We could have taken a table on the terrace but Mrs B preferred to sit just inside. The delicious food was just as described in the online menu and Charles looked after us splendidly. We both enjoyed it as an uplifting treat.
We had a lovely afternoon tea and Magda made it even more special. Thank you very much , we will be back.
A most enjoyable way to follow an absorbing hour with Rembrandt!
Three-tier cake stand attractively presented with freshly baked savouries (smoked salmon bagel, best egg mayonnaise voted by fellow guests, bite size quiche still warm and chive herby mini scones) cream tea of scones jam and clotted cream. Top tier finale of bite size Victoria sponge cakes, macaroons, Lemon drizzle cake (divine) and lastly mango panna cotta ... and choice of teas.
All very spoiling as a rare treat to sit down to a proper tea of a high standard with friends after viewing Young Rembrandt exhibition. All the servers wearing masks and very helpful.
Looking forward to a return visit when the restaurant is able to re-open fully.
A bit lacklustre and a little basic. Not a huge range of tastes on offer.
Expensive for what we got £50 for 2.
Would have expected tablecloths at least.
Service was good.
No offer to top up teapot so tea was cold by the end.
We booked for a cream tea. We loved the experience. Staff were amazing!
A real treat to get afternoon tea at the restaurant. The service was outstanding, we were made to feel so welcome. Afternoon tea was wonderful - the savouries were particularly special. Thanks for a wonderful experience ( followed up by the amazing Young Rembrandt exhibition). A great afternoon out.
An excellent few hours enjoying tasty afternoon tea in pleasant surroundings. Top notch service by Magdalena. Recommended.
A traditional cream tea with a modern twist. My wife had the gluten free version. This was the perfect end to a perfect day. The setting and ambiance were lovely. We will definitely return.
The perfect treat! Perfectly judged high tea in a beautiful setting. Staff could not have been more helpful
Excellent food and ambience. Would recommend it.
I met my sister yesterday for the first time since before Coronavirus lockdown. Our day out in Oxford started with an early (12.00) afternoon tea in the Ashmolean Rooftop Restaurant. What a great start! A wide variety of delicious savoury and sweet goodies were served, accompanied by a glass of Prosecco and pot of tea each. Every crumb was devoured.
Excellent experience Afternoon Tea (delicious and plenty of food).
Lovely location good covid precautions. Very quiet at 1300 on Sunday when we arrived.I think it is expensive for a regular afternoon tea. The mini tarts were superb both regular and veggie option.
Nice and civilised meal with my partner. Friendly and accommodating staff and a reasonable price for quality and location
Good afternoon Ian Thank you for your review of the rooftop restaurant afternoon tea , its great to hear that you all enjoyed your food service and felt it was good value, we look forward to welcoming you back to the rooftop restaurant soon.
£30 for an afternoon tea is quite pricey, so I would expect the food to be outstanding. It was good, but did not meet expectations. The service was outstanding 😄.
I would have given 4/5 stars if our nibbles had been delivered before the main course. As it was we went without. We were not charged for them. The main course was delicious.
The restaurant is beautifully located overlooking Oxford with a pleasant outside area. The service was attentive but not obtrusive. The menu was adequate.
Staff here are really friendly and attentive without being overbearing. The food is fresh and original as well as being well presented. There was a reasonable choice for vegetarians and vegans. We had a starter and a dessert as we only wanted a lught lunch and everything was lovely. It is an attractive, light space and even nice when you can sit out on the terrace.
A very special airy and spacious place to have a special lunch
Lovely place , but food very disappointing and ordinary
A beautiful and unusual location with access to the outstanding galleries and exhibitions.
A great place to catch up with Oxford friends who can easily walk/ride to the rendezvous, and then worry about the lifts and have to run up the stairs.
Despite booking a table in advance for 1.30pm no one was at the welcome station for several minutes to seat us. As 3 non-meat eating diners we were limited in our options, but all ordered the vegetable wellington. After the waiter had taken our orders and several minutes later, he came back to say there was one left (we had not received water for the table by this point either and had to remind him). Several minutes after ordering alternatives he returned again to say one of our dishes was also not available. We ordered second alternatives. Two of us had the risotto which was bland, undercooked and boring. The restaurant was extremely loud the entire time, the service was generally slow, and this was a hugely disappointing visit.
Always an interesting place to eat, great views, great service, excellent food. Not an extensive menu but a good and varied one.
Lovely restaurant with a fab atmosphere. Fantastic staff and delicious food.
Having read quite a few negative reviews of the restaurant I was hesitant to book lunch but my wife and I were visiting to see the Rembrandt exhibition so decided to chance it.
The staff were the best thing about the place other than the views. My vegetarian meal was poor fare and overpriced. My wife's mussels were better but hardly generous with the portions.
We won't be returning any time soon.
Management need to think who they're trying to attract. You either need to raise quality to justify prices or come up with something that aims lower and in any case offers best value.
Had drinks in the cafeteria earlier. The tea pot was filthy.
Five of us come once or twice a year, take in the exhibition, and follow up with lunch at the rooftop restaurant. Whilst the set menu was nice, we couldn’t quite get the connection between Rembrandt, sandwiches and burgers! However, haveing said that the food was very tasty, especially the coffee pannacotta, and the men enjoyed their sticky toffee puds. The service, as always was very good.
We thoroughly enjoyed our day out in Oxford and having lunch at the Ashmolean was the crowning of the day. All went like clock work. Staff really helpful and friendly. Thank you.
