Ashmolean Rooftop Restaurant
Ashmolean Rooftop Restaurant provides the spectacular setting for Oxford's first and only rooftop restaurant.
We have a fantastic fresh menu taking the food back to a good, hearty British feel with a European twist.
Ingredients are fresh and seasonal and we use many local Oxfordshire suppliers to bring the best quality to you.
I was very surprised at the very limited choice for vegetarians
Very busy lunchtime and the ordering was very confused. However it was rectified with a smile.
Delicious food and would certainly eat their again
There were not enough staff on duty when we went on Monday, with the result that the service was very slow - annoying when one has tickets for a special exhibition. I had to send back my main course THREE times for various reasons.
On the plus side, though chaotic, the staff try to be helpful, and they did not charge us for coffee or my main course so we left feeling they had done their best to improve a poor experience.
But it was not good to find a message from OpenTable when I arrived home to say that we had not honoured our reservation!
It is a beautiful location in a wonderful museum, but they could do much better in my view and those of my companions.
The Ashmolean is always our first choice for a family get-together in Oxford. The location is unbeatable and the practicalities are good e.g. large tables for 4+ people, central location and the opportunity to look round the museum!
I was very happy with my meal, I just feel there should be better vegetarian options for lunch, as two of my guests felt like they could only really have the risotto,
The atmosphere was great and my sunday lunch was very good,
Don't go here for dinner they appear as if they'd really rather not do it. Busy at lunch and beautiful location but we arrived at 8.15 on a Saturday evening, it was very quiet and they rushed us, audibly clearing up around us. About as relaxing as a wet kipper to the face, on which note I'm pretty sure the menu hasn't changed in a long time. Very disappointing.
As usual we had an excellent experience - the food was interesting and well-presented and the service was impeccable. Our table was well-placed to enjoy the view of Oxford rooftops beyond the terrace. A really special place for an enjoyable lunch.
Had 2 bowls of soup which was tasty but luke warm so very disappointing, it came with a tiny piece of bread and so we asked for some extra bread and he bought the bread and olive oil off the starter list. so 2 soups 2 coffees and extra bread and the bill was £23 should have gone to a pub or café and the whole experience would have been much better.
As a University employee I was very disappointed.
wont be eating there again.
Service was severely overstretched; not enough waiting staff. Consequently they were inattentive and difficult to attract.
Restaurant was cold and draughty because two doors were open on a cold and windy day.
Food was variable; fish was good but chicken was poor. Summer pudding needed sweetening.
Restaurant very good. Booking a problem as website would not accept landline phone number as "UK" does not feature on international phone number codes. I used "Guernsey" to get my UK phone number accepted and was thereby able to complete the booking process.
The lunch reached all expectation. The lamb was extremely well cooked. Presentation of food was excellent. A lovely lunch and very relaxing as we weren't rushed.
Very good Sunday Roast offering!
Perfect place for a celebration for university graduation with a lovely tea

Good varied menu, attentive service good location with view.
We had a great time lovely venue and food, will go again
Excellent food and marvellous helpful and kind staff
Good food, nice setting but very slow service indeed. The restaurant seemed quite seriously understaffed which was a shame.
I booked online to go to the Ashmolean Rooftop Restaurant at 3 PM after we had carried out our various errands in Oxford.
We arrived at the Ashmolean in good time but unfortunately it took over 10 minutes to negotiate the ridiculous lift system.
On arriving at the restaurant we were taken to a table and left with an afternoon tea menu. We enquired about lunch. We were told no lunches were available because it was after the time and we could have afternoon tea or nothing.
We had coffee. We then tried in vain to catch the eye of a waitress to pay but in the end had to go to the main desk. We were told we should have waited at our table to pay.
So there we were at 3:30 PM having had no food and feeling rather disgruntled.
I waited for the lift while my wife and daughter walked down the stairs. I had a long wait.
My wife and daughter ended up in the basement for staff only since there were no directions on the staircase as to where to go.
All in all the visit was a disaster.
We shall not be returning and we shall warn all our friends not to bother.
Reliable, stylish, relaxing venue for lunch, dinner and the very popular afternoon tea... Nobody rushing you out, lovely atmosphere. Thanks
Although the waiter was affable we found the service slow even before 1-00 pm. The set menu was very disappointing. The starter was just tomatoes with dressing. The main course, a ravioli, was acceptable but somewhat dull and there was not much of it. The dessert was so uninteresting that we have forgotten what it was. We asked to have our coffees on the verender, but were told that we would have to take them there ourselves after paying the bill. Presumably this was something to do with a territorial arrangement between waiters.
The setting is super, but last time we enjoyed a better value meal in the basement cafe rather more.
Wonderful central restaurant especially if the weather is fine and you can sit in the balcony and get the view over Oxford. Sunday Roast is great value and very tasty.
Sunday lunch Lamb - meat was tough.
We were overcharged.
With so much going for it in its location, the restaurant is let down by very average food which is poorly presented. This is our second visit but there will not be a third.
Beautiful venue with a laid-back and casual vibe. High tea was wonderful.
We had an excellent two course set lunch with smiling staff trying hard to make us happy
Great place if sunny weather!
Food —-they haven’t changed the lunch menus.
Great place to eat i really enjoyed the experience, the service was exceptional on a very busy day.
I was looking forward to taking my friend for her birthday. The afternoon tea was disappointing. Having said to the waiter that I didn’t want the egg mayonnaise sandwiches or cake with orange in, they bought them anyway. After taking away the sandwiches they replaced the egg mayonnaise. Unfortunately although they took the orange cake away they didn’t replace it with anything else.
The scones were good but there was only 1 small pot of cream between us. The cake was Ok but being left out for a while tasted stale and dry.
The service was Ok.
Very poor service. Main course of chicken o.k. desert pannecota and raspberries very solid and only three raspberries.
Very good, we enjoyed the food and sitting outside was lovely just a shame we had to ask for our cup of tea and coffee , but I will say this did not spoil our afternoon.
There could me more variety of smaller meals /platters/ mezze type food. Menu options rather limited.
Food was very mediocre. Stale croutons in salad; dessert just taken out of fridge and so scarcely edible (we didn't eat it). Service: WHY is it SO difficult to get someone's attention? You have to get up to order coffee; get up to order the bill. It wasn't that busy and there was plenty of staff but they pay no attention to diners. They just walk past and ignore you and do everything except wait on tables. There are countless mediocre restaurants in Oxford...and this isn't even that good.
Lovely food, ambience and service, - the only downside was a minor plague of wasps!
Visited on Bank Holiday Monday for my daughters birthday and had a lovely time. The food was great and good value, the service was also good. Will definitely return and recommend
Unfortunarely the menu was small, limited ant interesting. The setting beautiful, but not enough umbrella. The service was not overtly friendly.
I’ve been here quite a few times and it’s gone really down hill. The setting is amazing but the staff do not interact or make it a pleasurable experience. There is no ambience such a shame as the food was good! But we spent quite a lot of money and felt there was no recognition.
Great restaurant. Great atmosphere. Great staff. Great food. The best place in Oxford to relax, meet up with friends over drinks or a meal after a long day.
Food and location were great. The service on the day we went was not up to the standard you would expect.
Very nice location. Friendly staff. Food on the expensive side. Would have expected higher quality.
