Ashmolean Rooftop Restaurant
Ashmolean Rooftop Restaurant provides the spectacular setting for Oxford's first and only rooftop restaurant.
We have a fantastic fresh menu taking the food back to a good, hearty British feel with a European twist.
Ingredients are fresh and seasonal and we use many local Oxfordshire suppliers to bring the best quality to you.
We provide everyday lunch service from 12 PM until 3 PM as well as wonderful Afternoon Tea available from Monday to Saturday form 3 PM until 4:15 PM. You can also join us for dinner available from Thursday until Saturday from 5:30 PM until 8:30 PM.
We look forward to seeing you!
Uninspiring menu. No wines by the glass advertised. Mackerel starter had little mackerel and too much beetroot (which did not seem to be candied, as advertised). Portobello mushroom was undercooked and had its stalk on. Rembrandt sandwich was overcooked and dried up. Poor value and disappointing.
Excellent food and service in a great setting, only shame was the weather which meant we couldn't enjoy the views properly
Great night out, lovely staff and customer service. Thanks!
Excellent on every level
We ate on a quiet Saturday night, but it was still a lovely experience. We were very impressed
The meal including service, food quality and outlook over Oxford was excellent.
However I dropped a star in this review because the booking element was a total failure! I booked on line via Open Table and received a confirmation, however when I arrived with my guests, the waiter could find no record of my reservation in his system! I showed him my paper copy, but still no good. Fortunately there was a free table and we had an excellent dining experience. Also at 12. 30pm (half an hour after we had sat down) my email received a request from Open Table asking if we had enjoyed our meal!
The menu was limited and unfortunately the two vegetarian dishes were overcooked and tasted dry as did the calamari starter. The staff were efficient and charming. We would recommend it for the location and spacious dining room but the food was disappointing and rather expensive.
Very good level of food and good service. the location is stunning; booking recommended to avoid disappointment. Staff very helpful.
Great view and service. There are cheaper places to eat in Oxford.
Gnocchi sauce was lovely. Gnocchi varied between just right and bullet like. Desserts good though.
Nice relaxed lunch. Limited menu but delicious food and attentive service. Tasteful surroundings and good view of rooftops. A special treat.
We have sent email complaint because of truly awful food on Sunday. It was not just the reduced menu offered because of technical difficulties but the dreadful quality of the cooking of even very basic roast meat and roast vegetables. Gammon unacceptably salty, roast potatoes uncooked and grey, other roast vegetables tiny and very few of them. The lentil bake also dry, but good flavour. Affogato was a cup of coffee with , being generous, a teaspoon of vanilla ice cream plonked on top. Seriously woeful cooking of very basic food. Waiters were friendly and efficient although the final bill was wrong too. All kitchens have days when things don't work but if you are going to offer a basic menu at least make sure you can cook it adequately.
Overpriced and just a bit rubbish.
£6 for a tiny soup and an offensive sized piece of horrible bread.
£16 for a roast dinner which was cold.
Thoroughly disappointed and will be sharing the news with all at the university.
It was not made clear at the time of booking that hot good was not available and only afternoon tea would be on offer. As we were there we stayed. But we were not offered a choice of sandwiches and I really don't eat cold fish. Not great.
Food definitely does not live up to the name or reputation. I had the lamb which was tough and came with a rather dry puttanesca sauce, the two flavours didn’t go together at all, the lamb needed more fluid and a tarter sauce. My friend had the cauliflower steak which was also a bit dry. I then had sticky toffee pudding, which came with... no sauce. Advertised with a pecan toffee sauce which consisted of 2 dry pecans dopped on top. Over priced and underwhelmed.
Booked to meet up with friends. Greeting was warm and professional and shown to round table which was excellent as it is much easier to talk to everyone. Service was prompt and attentive and happy birthday wishes extended to friend as I had mentioned on booking that it was a celebration lunch for her. Attention to detail and booking form! Excellent.
Lunch was beautifully cooked and served in a timely fashion. Some had starters, some had puddings but all served promptly at the right time. Stayed for coffee as atmosphere so lovely and special. Real value for money in every way. Thank you.
Super efficient and polite waitresses, food was delivered fast and it was tasty. Good service, I would recommend.
My two guests thought their food was delicious. The only gripe I have was that the mash with the chicken was slightly runny in texture!
Service and ambience excellent. At times noise levels were high which did not help table conversation.
Very much enjoyed lunch. Friendly staff and a nice ambience.
Beautiful location with great views. Good choice on menu. Nice staff.
Super setting for some well presented and tasty food. Service was fab. Not too busy. Good menu.
We were lucky to be eating in the week after the exhibition closed so that it was relatively peaceful. The service was friendly and helpful as usual.
It was a bit surprising that there was no ice cream for one of the desserts
Nice atmosphere, relaxed and informal. The restaurant is light airy, the tables are well arranged. The menu is good, Sunday roast was excellent good quality ingredients cooked perfectly.
I had lunch here in November and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. This time was disappointing.
Really nice dining room, very good service and small but good choice of food.
Interesting menu which arrived promptly. Waiter had limited knowledge of drinks.
View over the rooftops was spectacular and wind made the pigeons flight extraordinary.
ideal place for lunch after attending an exhibition
Nice place to eat after an exhibition. Light and airy, we had good service and the food was fine - nothing very special but okay for lunch
Pleasant dining. I don't want to write a review. It should not be compulsory.
We had another good meal there. My wife choose to have a nibbles plate as well as 3 courses. Could thing we she had a poly bag in handbag so we could take away what we failed to finish.
Our lunch was a very pleasant experience. The food was delicious and the ambience was lively and interesting. The service staff could have been more smiley and friendly, but they were prompt. The roast beef was mouthwatering. A unique Oxford expérience!
It was our 10th anniversary. We arrived at 8:30 pm late because we went to the Museum entrance and because we had a son of 2 years old and it took a little bit longer for him to go to sleep. There was just another couple in the restaurant that were finishing their dinner. The waiter was quite rude and, literally, "told us off" because we arrived 20 min late. He told us that we needed to order straight away because the kitchen were going to close soon. We sat down, we looked at the menu and we ordered. I told him that we have arrived 15 min late not 20 min. He kept discussing about the issue saying that, among other things, we'll need to leave at 9:30 and then I just simply said that fair enough. I could see that the conversation was going nowhere and I wanted to enjoy my 10th anniversary with my wife. We finally finish to eat around 9:15 and as it was very quiet in the restaurant (we were the only ones!) we left.
To sum up, the dinner was ok (because we wanted to have a good time) but not special as I wanted to be (that is the reason why I booked a table in the Ahmolean restaurant and that is why I went the day before that everything was ok). It would be nice if the ashmolean can compesate us for this unfortunate event.
Not the best ambience for dinner as it was so quiet on the night we attended. I would recommend it is tried for afternoon tea or lunch. Food was quite good - rather unusual flavour combinations.
Not worth the money. Just a normal cream tea nothing special at all. Advertised as “ can see the whole of oxford from rooftop views” is hardly true.
The food was exceptional and the staff very friendly and accommodating what eat
there again without any issues
Lovely location and ambiance food was good and service meant you didn’t feel rushed.
Found it quite noisy - our vegetables were very undercooked and felt it was a little over priced
Service wasn’t brilliant either
As always, it was a delight to eat at the Ashmolean. The setting is unparalleled and the cheerful service and good food lives up to that location.
We found the staff quite tired and irritated. I assumed it was after a busy lunch but no excuse. I won't bother again
The Rooftop Restaurant is a beautiful venue right in the middle of Oxford and should be the perfect idea for a lovely lunch after seeing an exhibition. This time, it was part of a Christmas present. We do like coming to the restaurant, being tempted every time by the beautiful location. However, on more than one occasion the food has been average at best, definitely nothing special for the price. That was unfortunately also the case on our recent visit on 27 December. Not bad but .... ! What we really have been disappointed with on numerous occasions, however, is the service. Often slow, this time we had to wait about 15 minutes to even be asked if we wanted a bottle of water. Some waiting staff are much friendlier/more attentive than others - room for improvement there in general. We also had to wait a long time to pay once we had asked for the bill. We completely understand that the staff are busy and are working extremely hard but as a customer you expect very good service in a restaurant like this. So, whilst we still ticked "yes" for recommendation, we probably would also give our friends some warnings before their visit and, personally, we might not be tempted to come again so soon.
Good place for lunch or tea. but not for breakfast.
