Very spotty service. Menu and service have changed completely since they opened. When they first opened, Aster was all about Scandi food and the Finnish chef's touches were all over the menu. Service was sophisticated and polished. They've turned it into a very typical brasserie experience, albeit same beautiful interiors, but almost nothing of its Scandi heritage on the menu anymore - very British bistro, like The Ivy, Delaunay, etc. Service was very patchy and no one knows the provenance of the food, which is odd for D&D. Not a bad place, but certainly not what it once was.
Very good tasty meal. Very good service. Perhaps larger portions to get better value for money but prices were not too expensive. Very nice relaxed atmosphere. Had a 1st floor window table for two with a good view of Victoria Street. Will definitely be visiting again.
My wife and I ate here before going to see Hamilton. I ate off the main menu and she ate off the pre theatre special menu and we were both impressed with our meals and the quick service (in and out in less than 1 hour). Would definitely recommend it.
I've been to this restaurant twice within a month, and both times food and services were impeccable. It's a great addition to the area.
Had a lovely dinner with friends at Aster. Food is absolutely fantastic and service is very good.
We did take advantage of the promotion which made the dinner better value. The portion sizes are on the small side.
Simply put, the best service in London. I’ve been twice now and it was absolutely fantastic both times! Food is also good and the bottomless prosecco brunch option is fab! Would recommend to anyone!
A delightful venue for an early evening supper with a friend. Excellent food and well presented. Staff were friendly and professional. Will certainly visit again.
Fantastic service, food and value on the 3 course menu. The bread was fantastic and the cold / hot dishes perfect for a decent lunch. Will definitely come back here soon.
My second visit and as with the first a real experience. Service was efficient and friendly, food beautifully presented and delicious and the pre theatre menu great value.
We had the 3 course pre-theatre menu and all I can say is WOW! The food did not disappoint, all presented well and the flavours were just stunning.
The rye bread was amazing and reminded me of when I used to live in Finland!
None of use left feeling hungry and I can say with great certainty that I will be back to try out more of the menu!
We booked the bottomless brunch for a friend’s birthday and had the loveliest time - we were given a great table by the window, menu choices were varied and the food itself was amazing. Waitresses were so lovely and attentive throughout, we never had to ask for anything it was really lovely. Would definitely recommend!
Terrible service - inflexible, rude, lack of experience, limited many knowledge - which ruined the meal
We had the 3 course theatre menu and were very pleased. I loved the salmon starter especially. We would dine here again.
Was searching for a good value pre-theatre menu, and thought Aster would fit the bill. I regularly dine out for pre-theatre menus, and have to say.. there are far better value places, with better quality food and better tasting. There's nothing particularly wrong with Aster ...except perhaps, the food is bland, portions are very small compared to other restaurants. However, there's nothing especially memorable about Aster either. Service met the standards of a modern French restaurant, but if comparing food choices... they're really unmemorable. There was just no WOW effect - everything we tasted was just.. blah. Presentation was top notch, beautifully plated. But taste wise, it was disappointing. Dessert was the biggest disappointment of all..served on a small plate, not much decoration - it could have been something served at a casual diner. The fact that dessert could have been its saving grace, cancelling the effects of the previous bland courses - go with a big bang. Instead, it was like the final nail in the coffin, sealing the fate of the restaurant. We won't be coming back, and I can't honestly in good conscience recommend this place to my friends.
That said, if you need to find a spot to dine near the theatre, and you want ambience, then Aster might fit the bill. Just don't expect to be wowed by the food.
The food was delicious but the portions are on the smaller side. Must try the deconstructed cheesecake
There’s a lot to like about the venue and food. Light and subtle flavours and very fresh ingredients impress a lot.
Two things I’d like to improve:
- some of the portions are unnecessarily small for the price. A few extra slices of herring on the starter plate would be great (for example)
- the deconstruction idea didn’t really work on the pudding (it just looked like the leftovers of a cake box lined up in a row)
Really good service, excellent food. Definitely be back!
Enjoyed a three course pre-theatre meal with cocktails. The food is really tasty and the menu is interesting. Wine list is a little pricey. Service was really good - friendly, smiling staff.
Proper imaginative food and excellent service. A good find in an area that needs more decent restaurants.
Excellent pre-theatre dinner. Innovative food, beautiful dining room upstairs.
Really great atmosphere, service was good but we were all thoroughly underwhelmed by the food. Veggie options espically were really lacking any kind of flair. Considering the price we were disappointed after having read so many great reviews
We found the restaurant to be spacious and airey and with an interesting menu and comprehensive wine list. Location was excellent for our purposes and we will definitely be back!
We had the pre theatre menu and told the staff when we needed to leave. Starters, including mackerel and asparagus soup were nicely presented and good to eat. However, main courses took 30 mins to arrive, one was forgotten and one of the sides wasn't what it was meant to be. We had to ask for the bill with our main courses and shovelling the food down our throats turned a treat into a penance. The fact that the fish was very plain at least made that easier.
Restaurant design is modern and stylish. I would like to be able to comment on the toilets but didn't have time to go.
Aster was fantastic - great pre-theatre menu - and amazing cocktails and mocktails! Well worth it!
What a lovely restaurant amidst the hustle, bustle and building works of Victoria Station and it's surroundings. From the second we stepped through the door, every single member of staff greeted us as we walked to our table - no matter what they were doing! It wasn't too busy but the staff were attentive without rushing us, our glasses were always filled without asking and was just such a nice atmosphere and ambience. As for the food! It was delicious! Looked and tasted fresh, presented brilliantly and I can't wait to get back to this place. Perfect for pre/pst theatre esp as it's right next door to the theatre showing Hamilton!
We have visited before and found the Aster wonderful, it still is. Our only comment would be that there needs to be a wider choice in the menu for veggies. The lunch menu was limited and heavy on fish.
The food was very fresh, well presented and great flavours. I would highly recommend....staff were very attentive and ensured we were not missing anything.
Modern, attractive restaurant & very convenient if you are going to see Hamilton at the Vic Palace which is almost next door.
Stayed with a la carte & food was excellent & nicely presented. They do get very busy so pre theatre rush makes service but haphazard. Was pleasantly surprised by quality & can well recommend it
The service was excellent, attentive but not overbearing. We had the tasting menu, everything was exquisite. Bold flavours with a lovely playfulness of touch. The sommelier in particular was excellent- some fascinating information about the wines and great dialogue/ exchanging of ideas. Thank you, I will definitely be back
Always a great brunch
I have done a fuller review on Trip Advisor. In summary: Food very good except not scandinavian enough. This could be any restaurant almost anywhere in central Europe. Ambience great, service superb.
We loved the food her, everyone was really friendly. We went to see Hamilton after, which is right next door, so for us it was a perfect location too.
Fab food and great service. Excellent choice for non meat eaters and desserts to die for.
Great ambience, although towards the end the table next to us became a bit rowdy! Good, reliable menu. Creative, but plenty of choice so a great option for working lunches. Very good service, although getting the bill took a while.
Fabulous ambiance and delicious food served by friendly and attentive staff. Especially love the upstairs restaurant.
We booked Aster Restaurant because of its close proximity to the theatre we were going to. Also as it's part of the D&D Group, we knew it would be a 'safe bet'. And it was. The food was really very good. The service less so.... a bit haphazard, although well intentioned. Side dishes not arriving until we were half way through our dinner, long gaps before being asked for further drinks. It's a funky atmosphere but a bit chilly. Not as warming as it could be and given it has a Nordic influence a bit of Hygge might have been nice. Best bits: the delicious crab starter. Worst bits: no loo paper in 3 out of 4 women's loos at 7:15pm on a Friday night.... that is just not quite good enough.
Average food. Immature service. E.g. forgot to ask us about wine so we ended up with wine at after our main course. Average food. Overpriced for what it is.
Great food, good choices on menu. Lovely light lunch.
Amazing lunch!!!! Beautiful food. Brilliant textural combinations. Lovely service!! Thank you!
We visited Aster for the first time during the opening week in 2016 and we were blown away by the food, service and ambiance. Returning with high expectations and keen to take our friends there, we felt that the menu had lost it’s special Nordic touch. Whilst the food was OK, it was not memorable. Service was fine but a little impersonal.
I doubt we will be visiting again.
