Basil is the realization of the lifelong dream of Henry and Chai Eang, brothers who immigrated to the United States from turbulent 1970s Cambodia. From speaking not a word of English, to creating award-winning dining experiences throughout the Carolinas, the duo has married hard work with passion to bring authentic Thai cuisine to their new home.

Since opening the first Basil in Charleston to rave reviews, several trendy locations have followed over the last dozen years. As Greenville newbies we are working our way through the area's dining landscape. We've been lucky enough to dine all over the globe and readily available and plentiful high quality cuisine driven foodie havens is a prerequisite for where we finally settle. We have definitely found an area that continues to surprise with flair and authenticity. Thx Basil for standing up to this highly competitive community of quality cuisine. We really enjoyed our dinner. Wonton soup cured everything, Pad Thai was fresh and sauced on point, super hot fresh egg rolls done right, and fried rice that was complimentary. We will be back to try some more items.... Cliff

On this cold sunny day we had the perfect soups Served by a friendly and good server. I did not know they had lunch service and am so glad I know now.

The food was excellent (could taste all flavor notes) and our server was great. Added bonus is the restaurant is dog friendly so our pups came in with us.

We enjoy Thai food, and are used to being asked how spicy we want our entrees. We weren't, which might have been a sign. All the dishes -- green curry, Thai basil, and pad Thai were only lightly spiced. The rice served with the sauce dishes was quite dry, as well. The shrimp and basil rolls were uninteresting, containing only noodles, a shrimp and a basil leaf. The dipping sauce was lively, but cold rolls at other Thai restaurants have had more flavor. Overall the food was very disappointing. The good news: the leftover green curry found its spiciness when reheated the next day, and 2 teaspoons of pad Thai sauce from the local grocery brought the leftover pad thai up to par. Other pluses: The entrees were large enough so that there were leftovers, and our server was happy to double-bag them for our trip home, so the car wouldn't smell like a kitchen.
