Exceptional service and very good food atmosphere quite pleasant
We've been going to Bastille for years and loved the old location. The new location lacks the same worn in vibe and seems too sterile. Maybe because it was Sunday or the sous-chef was running the back of the house, but the food was off for what we've come to expected of Bastille. 1. Escargot was cloyingly garlicky. 2. Both salads were over salted and 60 deg. eg was left in the Sous-vide too long / high. 3. Risotto too al dente to the point of being raw in the middle of half the grains. 4. Duck breast was seven minutes past medium rare to the point of well done and no skin which may have lead to a well-done duck breast. 5. Accompanying reduction was acidic as if white vinegar was added at the last moment and not cooked out. 6. Nutella crepe was previously made and then assembled for service which results in a tough, dried out, and flavorless crepe. 7. At least the wine was good.
Great food at a reasonable price with great atmosphere!
We were there for dinner. The hostess and bartender were very friendly. However, I waitress was not nor was she helpful. The food was mediocre at best and at those prices I would expect much more.
Hi Mindy, thank you so much for taking the time to review your experience. I am so sorry to hear that you didn't receive the professional service required by our staff. I can reassure you this review will be used as a teaching opportunity and a moment of growth for our team. I'd love the opportunity to gain more insight on your dining experience and also offer you the opportunity to try our new Fall Menu. Thank you again !
Bastille is my favorite restaurant in Alexandria. I have eaten there or at Bistro Royal several times and have never been disappointed. I wish my hometown had as good a restaurant. Congratulations on superb food and service. Well done!
Superb as always! Brunch at Bastille is such a treat. Great food done exceedingly well.
Always good food, capable service and a quiet dining room. Very civilized place for a meal.
We have eaten at the restaurant previously and really enjoyed the food. But this visit, my duck was over cooked and tough, the vegetable and risotto were undercooked. Very disappointing.
Food as always is excellent, warm welcome, and generally nice service- however, this time we actually were looking for our server and realized there was no server at all in the dining room. We had indicated we wanted to switch from white to red with our main course. After waiting a couple of minutes after our main course was served I got up to go toward where we could see servers by the kitchen. But for that glitch, it would have been a 5 rating for service.
What gem this place is! Always parking available , friendly staff, very comfy seating, great decor and perfect proportions of delicious food.
Despite few patrons dining while I and my wife were dining (Sunday brunch), we found the time between ordering and food arriving course-by-course, excessive (even factoring in French dining culture blasé), while the wait service was “too casual” I.e., insufficiently attentive.
Another fabulous meal at Bastille. The staff, service and food are all excellent and we love the outdoor patio for alfresco dining when the weather is great.
Bastille is a delightful and consistently reliable neighborhood brasserie offering delicious meals at reasonable prices. Servers are attentive and incredibly friendly without being overbearing. The noise level permits easy table conversations which enhance the dining experience. Our recent visit to Bastille included salads (the Betteraves, Oranges and Chevre Chaud is a perfect start to dinner) with sea scallops and rack of lamb for our entrees. The wine list offers a variety of nicely priced selections and the dessert menu includes plates easily shared if one is looking for a light and tasty finish to the meal. Bastille is a true neighborhood gem for those desiring a more tranquil alternative to the King Street restaurant/bar scene.
Perhaps our favorite restaurant in Old Town BUT last two visits have been disappointing. Lamb was thin and somewhat fatty slices. Not many, either. Ordered the same thing back in June and it was a generous and meaty, either leg or rack - I forget which. Also, our server disappeared and didn’t come back to ask if we wanted another glass of wine until our dinner plates were removed. Yes, we wanted another glass but not after we’d finished our meal. I hope Bastille’s problems are just temporary. We’ll wait for a while until we go back.
Made some requests for low salt and the chef had several options! The waiter was very helpful in this process. The waiter also had a great recommendation of Wine. I would come back!
Outstanding food...a treasure discovered in our own neighborhood!
The food was good, but the noise level was high, especially because we were very near a table of women who forgot to use their indoor voices. Seating is close to other tables. Our waiter treated us dismissively as if he didn't think we were good for a decent tip so he didn't need to waste time with us.
A great place to meet the girls for food and drinks
The restaurant has the look and feel of a Parisian bistro or a Restaurant in smaller city. The food was
uniformly excellent. Some of the servers were inexperienced and a few times forgot the cutlery when serving the course. The table of 4 adult women behind us were having a loud get together as if they were alone. It was the only distraction.
Getting back to the food, each course was an excellent version of some classic- actually better than the classic.
Bastille consistently serves fresh delicious meals at a very reasonable price.
Back When you were by the river, your food was better. I got my fave on this last visit -- steak frittes and a glass of Malbec -- and was underwhelmed by both. And we were annoyed throughout our entire Sunday dinner by the constant buzzing of flies on the patio. The highlight were the fries: they were perfect. My companion really liked your falafel salad and glass of rose. On a previous visit, a Sunday brunch, I got the burger: far tastier than the sliced steak. Maybe next time I'll ask for blue cheese on my steak, instead of the sauce.thanks.
We had a lovely brunch here. I had not visited for Brunch before, but it was superb. The croque madame is worth the calories. We also had the 'mimosa brunch' option, which at $21 was a very value as well as delicious. would definitely recommend.
Good overall - would like to see a salmon entree return to the menu.
Friendly service, great classic French good. This place is a neighborhood gem.
Highly recommend. The wait staff is professional, friendly, and knowledgeable. The music was a little strange and unexpected when we first arrived, but after a few songs became the sophisticated music we usually enjoy as background. The creamy gazpacho was delicious, the salmon over risotto was rich and comforting, and the hazelnut crepes were a dream. Had a very nice Riesling too. Not a drop of food or drink was left. The price was very satisfying also. Will return soon.
We went Sunday night over the long weekend and sat outside on the patio. The meal was what I have come to expect from this wonderful little French bistro on the outskirts of Potomac Yards. We had the 3-course Restaurant Week menu, with a very smart twist. Instead of having to order the Appetizer-Entree-Desert, for those who are not desert oriented (like me), you could instead order 1 appetizer and 1 salad/soup from the list. I went with that option. First course was the wonderful Escargot Provencales. An abundant portion of the little critters, sauteed in a broth of garlic, shallots, tomato and basil pesto. Yum! Second course, was the soupe du jour, which was a thick, creamy Gazpacho. Also yummy! The entree was not the special filet I had ordered, as they had run out. Instead I had the Steak Frittes, which was superbly grilled, perfect medium temperature, sliced against the grain, covered with a seductive Cabertnet-shallot gravy, and accompanied by a perfectly dressed watercress salad and wonderfully crispy pommes frites. Never missed the desert, and the service was extra attentive. We had a bottle of 2016 Louis Jadot Pinot Noir (which we brought, they have a very reasonable $25 corkage fee). All around a highly memorable meal!!
Best dinner my wife and I have had in a while! She had the scallops, I had the trout. Both cooked to perfection. Atmosphere was nice, service Outstanding! We will be back the next time we are in town. Best meal we had on vacation!
It was our first visit. Food was just okay, not great. Service was good.
We went to Bastille for our anniversary. They made it such a special night. Amazing food and amazing service by Leilani. All her recommendations were spot on. It was our first visit, but certainly not our last. Thank you!
I wish they would stick with a classic escargot recipe. There’s nothing better! All food is well flavored and beautifully presented. Leave room for dessert!
Love the food! Service was good. Loved sitting outside, except for all the flies.
This delightful bistro is our neighborhood restaurant for all occasions & just a drop before cocktails at the bar or outdoor patio.
I suppose if you go to a restaurant enough times you're bound to have a bad experience. I've been to Bastille too many times to count and have always had a great meal and experience. Yesterday was the exception. The service wasn't poor, it was non-exsistent. Orders were forgotten, silverware wasn't brought. The waiter disappeared for long periods of time and when he appeared in the dining room had the ability not to look in our direction. Well, maybe it was his first day...
I absolutely love Bastille. I have never had a bad meal and the service is exceptional. It is always quiet with a relaxed atmosphere no matter how many people are there.
Our second time at Bastille was great. We went during restaurant week, and weren’t sure how the serving sizes would be. We were pleasantly surprised to be served full size dishes that were so delicious.
Food, as always, perfectly prepared, beautifully presented , with just the right amount of food - service very professional. All of these are the reasons my wife and I keep coming back, making this one of our favorite restaurants.
Please include steak frittes for Sunday brunch. I loved that dish from way back, when Bastille was at its old location, by the river.
This place was excellent! Service was spectacular. Food was delicious. Will certainly go back!
Food was terrible to say the least. It's like a Diner at best
