Food was great, with the exception of the fettuccine which tasted stale and had a consistency like cardboard. Interactions with the staff were OK but a few things detracted: (1) they didn't accept a request for meat to be well-cooked on the outside and rare on the inside, and the *way* the request was declined as a bit off-putting; (2) we got to watch the staff prepare our meal right in front of us, which was great, but then they cut off pieces of our meat (which had been cooked as whole pieces) and put some on their own (the staff's own) dinner plates, was a little weird and disappointing, and (3) they hustled us out of the restaurant about 20 minutes before the 1.5 hours that their website states we were welcome to stay.

Still my favourite restaurant in NYC and that includes the Michelin star restaurants I have been to. The food: exquisite, tantalising every taste bud with an array of textures and flavours. They also have such great knowledge of wines that they have sourced from a variety of vineyards, that they can always recommend something that aligns with your palate and the dishes you choose. 12 out of 10 would not be sufficient.

I neglected to fully read the terms of a reservation at Belle on OpenTable. I visited the establishment a couple years ago with friends, just ordered wine, and had no issue. I decided to catch up with a friend over dessert and wine, and placed a reservation at Belle by filling in the usual information on Opentable, and adding a credit card. When things fell through, and I called to cancel the reservation 20 minutes before we were due, I was shocked to hear the cancellation fee was $75 per person. I understood the reasoning that my reservation held seats in a small restaurant, and felt the restaurant was justified in the claim that canceling at the last minute put them in a bind to fill seats. So, I decided to come in, primarily because I was wagering a $150 fee. To my surprise, I found the 12-seated restaurant occupied by 3 people, and immediately felt swindled. I knew I only wanted dessert. I felt obligated to order a glass of wine, given my decision to solely splurge on their $17 desserts, but was dismayed to find, after I ordered wine, that I was required to order two small plates or one entree. I am beguiled by this experience. The first word that comes to mind is extortion. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone in my network; friend or foe, for no one should be forced into a restaurant experience in this way. Nowhere on the menu in their restaurant or on the website does it state that patrons are required to order two small plates (starting at a minimum of $20) or one large plate (starting at a minimum of $40). Instead they wish to parade this information on Opentable, a third party reservation system. If you wish to require your patrons to order a minimum, why function as an a la carte? Why not function as a prix fixe establishment? It is devious to only list your required minimums on a third party website. When I think of my meal at Belle, I am only plagued with the thought of deceit. Spend your money elsewhere.

Your problem with our policies is your problem. Clearly you did not bother to read them. Check the “about” tab of our website. The info is there. That section is also printed and posted at the door. As you’ve aptly illustrated we have no control over guests who neglect to read the information we publish in 3 places.

Spectacular food in an intimate and open environment. A wine selection with something for everyone.
The food is modern, rooted in comfort, full of flavor.
Can’t wait to go back. It’s a great place to bring someone who has seen and done it all in NYC. A great experience all around!

I always love bringing everyone here, from business colleagues to friends or just a date with my husband. The food and wine is always fantastic! I only wish they could seat a few more but I suppose that would reduce the quiet intimacy and feel of this gem of a restaurant.

Great place. But they rush you too much. If you are paying so much money for an experience, they need to make sure they don't push the guests so much. We wanted to order an extra dish before we had received our main entrees and it was not allowed. They should add another 30 minutes in between dining sessions to make it not so hurried. Otherwise it is a great place.

I think a fair review would include that your party was late for, and at least 20 mins after your decisions had been given to the chef, was when you asked to add another dish. It's made very clear how important it is that all guest be on time, and we also make it very clear that we offer all of our guest a 90min dinning experience, because we have to consider our other guest. Guest do have the opportunity to extend their 90mins when we are able, of course with our business in mind.

Beautiful presentation and a very creative menu. The food couldn’t have been any better. We dine at top restaurants all over Manhattan, and this is by far one of the top meals I’ve had in New York. Make reservations in advance. It’s a small and intimate setting.

Cannot say enough about this WONDERFUL place!
I keep going back and on Tuesday I brought my sister and brother in law (who's a chef). They were visiting from Italy and they could have not been more delighted.
They said the cozy atmosphere and service made them feel like they were at a lovely dinner party at someone's home.
The food was incredible. We kept adding dishes and ended up eating almost the entire menu.
Every detail was taken care of (as always) and the owners made us feel very special and answered the million questions my sister and her boyfriend had.
This has become my favorite restaurant in New York and I wish I lived closer to go more often.
Thanks Darryl and Melissa for another incredible night!

Belle Harlem is a New York City gem. It's tiny, with eight seats at a communal table and four more at a counter facing the cooking area. The chef is gifted; the food is outstanding; and the service is friendly. If you're comfortable in close quarters with other guests, understand that you've got only 90 minutes to enjoy, and will have a check for two in the $150-200 range, by all means go for it. Belle Harlem is a joy. We can't wait to go again.

Belle is my favorite restaurant in Manhattan. It might be my favorite restaurant anywhere. The food is spectacular, they are so inventive, warm and welcoming. It's a pleasure and more like stopping by a friend's for a spectacular meal than what has become "fine dining" in Manhattan. WE LOVE BELLE!!!!!!!

I saw the restaurant online and wanted some place with quality food for an intimate date night dinner with my wife. It was absolutely outstanding. We both have busy schedules and don’t get to do us often so this experience was very special for us. I’m vegan however everything was made with such care and love that I broke camp for the night and eat Everything! A foodie’s delight!
