Room for improvement with food- the dal served with the main course could be tastier and the masala chai served after the meal was warm, needs to be hot.

Staff and food are pleasant, location is expensive hence high prices are necessary. Food was spiced by a heavy hand and starter and main courses were dominated by heat rather than flavour (except for the chutneys which had little flavour but were unpleasantly sweet to our taste). Atmosphere was dull and dark. Service was focused, quiet and there were plenty of staff so no complaints on the efficiency of the service. Food portions were large rather than delicate. Not a disaster, more a disappointment as when we last ate here a few years ago the food was memorable and the service cheerful and effective. We were in London for two days and found some terrific places to eat at lunch and dinner. This was the least enjoyable stop for us.

Good ambiance and crowd. Was a little too loud but not bad. Our waiter was cheerful and good at explaining the menu. Appetizers were unique and tasty. Main course was very average and a couple of dishes were not good. The drinks were amazing.
Overall we felt, it didn’t live up to its Michelin star status. Food was below avg for Michelin restaurant. We had to ask for extra water and silverware a couple times. Expect more attentive service.
Way too overpriced for its value!

Save for the main course on the vegetarian tasting menu, the food was great, as usual. Somelier very helpful and all wine pairings outstanding. We have dined here on numerous occasions and this was not recognised in any way shape or form, which is a shame as other restaurants have welcomed us back, even after one previous visit.

Frankly, I think that there are other better options in London for the price premium was being charged. Variety of options was also poor.

Went with my husband for dinner on Sunday night and we absolutely loved it. The food was delicious - I had red mullet followed by hake, he had rabbit followed by lobster biryiani. Service was perfect too. Whole evening was faultless.

Very good but trading somewhat on past glories. Service is fine but sometimes it’s the little things. For example, when you note one veg and one non veg on the booking you might receive the correct menus to be brought first up. It’s a tiny, tiny thing but just an example. They have pushed the price up again, which is understandable but £110 for a tasting menu is poor value vs better value in Gymkhana etc round the corner. Overall, still a lovely meal with some immaculate Indian flavours.

I haven't been here in a few years, and was shocked at the change in the service and food quality. Our waiter was pushy and disinterested in both us and the food, never bothered to refer to any dish by it's proper name or describe what we were being served. It didn't feel like Michelin service. The portions were far too large, and the subtlety in the cooking had gone. Tables had been squeezed into every corner presumably to take up the Christmas glut, but that meant we were in a semi-inhabited corridor at the end of the restaurant, looking at empty tables in bright light and out of the restaurant's usually soft and inviting atmosphere. I had also never left Benares with smelly clothes, but everything I was wearing including my coat from the cloak room downstairs smelled very strongly of spicy cooking, again not what you expect from a restaurant of this standard. I hope it was just because of poorly judged decision to allow the Christmas demand to allow them to drop their principles, but I won't be going back to find out.

Great service. Good food but not exceptional. If you are Michelin star restaurant, the expectations are higher. Also there was less variety of food items on the menu. Some traditional Indian food that you expect in a restaurant like Benares was not available on the menu. Price is according to the Michelin star which is fine , however, value is not according to the overall "Indian" food experience

All agreed the mains and dessert did not live up the the starter.
However still a great experience.

Very disappointing... restaurant lacks atmosphere and the service is very average.
Did not live up to expectations following a previous visit.
Food poorly presented and VERY overpriced ...
Found the food to be very dry and did not seem very fresh. The rice for example had obviously been left under a heat lamp and had dried out!Certainly not the standards we would expect from a Michelin stared restaurant.
Reluctantly we paid the 13.5% service charge.
We won’t be rushing back
restaurant.

The staff upstairs were all very good, very friendly and efficient. If I have a comment - it’s that I thought the downstairs welcome and goodbye wasn’t as warm as it could have been, except for the gift of a silk scarf which was a nice touch. It’s just a little thing, but I noticed that’s all. I still love the place itself.

The restaurant is a lovely luxurious place to dine. The food at dinner was perfect. Possibly the best meal I’ve ever had (lobster briyani). However we were not offered nuts in the lounge (others had them), nor were we offered a second round of drinks at table. Even when we looked for the waiter to order more we couldn’t find him.

Based on our fabulous meal and wonderful atmosphere and service, I would highly, highly recommend this restaurant. I look forward to having again when I am in London the passion fruit martini, the green martini with a chili pepper you can eat easily because they have removed the seeds and above all else, there is a smoky after dinner Manhattan with real smoke that is incredible. We did something rather unconventional and ordered all eight side orders for our entire meal and it was a fantastic variety of flavors. The service and advice on the menu was very helpful and the head waiter was willing to explain how they make the smoke for the Manhattan in detail. I rarely drink Manhattans but this was in a different league than I ever experienced.
