Closed without notice . Several friends and I made reservations and not one email notification to let us know it was closed . We showed up to the venue with a makeshift sign in the window . This was a birthday celebration for me . Not only was it embarrassing but a waste of time .
This was just a terrible experience. Horrible enough to write my first ever review. I’ve never been to a place where you get your water and beverages half way though your meal. The buffet was depleted and most of the food was meh. The waffles and omelette station was a delight though. I know coming in for a 1 pm reservation you got through a couple of rushes but the place was about half full. I sat at the bar hoping to enjoy the bottomless mimosas but with a 20 minute wait time for each round who has the time. Since a 20% autograt was built in without any acknowledgement maybe it just didn’t matter.
It was a very romantic scenery, the food was delicious, and the service was great.
I was very upset to find out that I was not greeted. I was not spoken to or informed who our server would be. I was placed in a private room with no music, open windows and little to no service. This overall experience makes me not want to come back and most likely will not. I ordered drinks over an 30 minutes ago and never received my drink. This was for my birthday and this experience was horrible.
Bartender was very nice. Short staffed but could barely notice. Food still came out within a reasonable time.
Sunday brunch at Bernie's is a great time. The staff is always very friendly and accommodating. I took my mother for brunch recently and she absolutely loved it! This has become our regular brunch spot! Thanks for a great time! Huge S/O to the DJ playing this past Sunday, February 2nd. The vibe was exactly what we were looking for. Keep it up!!
Brunch date. It was our first time eating at Bernie’s. We enjoyed the food and overall atmosphere. Definitely will revisit for the mimosas and good food. There was a good mix of breakfast & lunch.
They ran out of ketchup which I’ve never heard of. They told me this when the burger and fries arrived. I would’ve ordered something else had they told me beforehand.
Very Chill & Relax Place To Go To With Friends & Family
Service was atrocious. I’ve been to the Glenside and Hatboro locations and we had friends meeting us downtown. They ordered wings that never came and it took over an hour for the rest of the food to come. In addition, the waitress never came by to see if
My family (which arrived after the first group) wanted drinks or if anyone wanted refills. Pretty embarrassing overall that we would recommend this to friends who also were frustrated.
Waited almost 2 hours for our food, only to be told the kitchen cancelled our order... They comped the drinks, but our entire evening was ruined. I’ve never seen this happen before
I sat at the bar for 15minutes & the bartender did not acknowledge me whatsoever. It seemed like they were understaffed behind the bar & the bartender didn't seem to mind ( he was moving at a snail's pace without any sense of urgency) that there were about 15 people waiting for the bartender to take their order. I finally sat down at my table since I was getting no service at the bar. I figured hey, you know what, I will order a Bloody Mary since it was a brunch buffet. When I asked for a Bloody Mary I was told I couldn't because they ran out of Bloody Mary mix? How does a restaurant/bar run out of Bloody Mary mix during weekend brunch? My sister in law was in the bathroom & witnessed a staff member come out of the stall & not wash her hands. Apparently there was no soap in there & so she saw the staff member just rinse her hands. ( gross!) My sister in law did inform the hostess of no soap in the ladies rest room. It seems like Bernie's was not prepared for all of the Penn State/Iowa fans in town for the basketball game.
Clearly the restaurant was not prepared for the volume on this Saturday. The service staff, particularly bartender and hostess did not appear to care!
The brunch food crew did best they could without significant support.
There was also no indication on open table reservation that they were only offering the brunch buffet.
Waiter informers is that they did not have a drink menu however we could order whatever we wanted. The bartender made what he wanted and the food was horrible.
We arrived, were seated quickly as there were very few people in the restaurant. Our friend ordered a white wine, we were told they were out of all white wine in the restaurant, then he ordered a Fat Tire beer, out of that too. Food was very mediocre at best.
We sat for 20 minutes before we were every asked what we wanted to drink. A table came and sat down next to us and received service before us. It was my first time going there and I will not be returning after the service we received. I brought out of town guests here and we were both disappointed.
Food was good but took forever (>45 minutes) to arrive. The waitress completely neglected us and did not seem to know either the food menu or the wine list at all.
The seared salmon and the scallops were excellent. THe only issue with the scallops was the portion was tiny--more like an appetizer than an entree. After eating the entree, we ordered appetizers (which were interestingly bigger portions than the entrees).
When I first dined at Bernie's University City when it opened last year, I was excited. Unfortunately, the past couple of visits has been very disappointing... not the food but the service. Let me first say that food has been good every time. Yesterday, I was extremely disappointed as it took 40 mins before our food came out and 20+ minutes for dessert which led us to take it home. Not once did the server communicate anything to us or even apologize. He took our order and only checked on us once our food came out. When we opted to have our dessert to go, it lack a couple items that came with it. Unfortunately, they did not meet our expectations when we requested the missing items. I doubt I will return because service is extremely important to me.
Best brunch buffet in the city! The restaurant was so accommodating and made my birthday very special. Plus bottomless mimosas. Can't beat it!
Everything was good however the noise level made conversation difficult
My wife and I really enjoyed dining at Bernie’s. The food was great! We found the dining experience very enjoyable. Our only disappointment was they were out of the Cab wine.
Extremely noisy. Asking for quiet table was told they were booked and their were plenty of tables. Server was good but slow for food to arrive and missing one meal.
If going to show or any spot. Skip this place
Also they have cover charges $5 for day party that is just a DJ and you’re not told. Another rip off
Good menu choices and large portions. Food was tasty but service was very slow and inattentive, except at the end. Very casual place and extremely noisy. More like a bar than a restaurant. Would not go back.
The food is good. Bar food. It is so loud that each of us got a headache. The back room nay be normal, but it was not available due to a private event. The server was sweet and apologetic, I think. We couldn’t hear him.
I have eaten at Bernie's lots of times and have always been pleased until last night. We were promptly seated shortly before my reservation time even though Bernie's reported that I was a no show for my reservation. The waitress was quite delayed getting to us. When we asked about the pretzel sticks we saw at the bar, the waitress told us those were for Happy Hour which ended 6 minutes prior to our request. We set for more than 10 minutes waiting on her. She didn't offer to go check or apologize that her tardiness prevent us from getting an order in PRIOR to the end of Happy Hour. We ordered the red sangria and asked the contents which the waitress wasn't sure of. When we received that, it tasted like kid's grape juice, very watered down. Not good at all. I had the sauteed shrimp. The shrimp was good but the sauce was weird. It had some "off" flavor that I can't place. My partner ordered the turkey chop, which she said was bizarre. The best part of her meal? The creamed kale. We considered ordering dessert but the waitress took so long getting back to us we simply paid our bill and left. In my experience this was NOT the typical dining experience at Bernie's, although, we will not return any time soon, if ever.
I just love this place. Would be there every weekend if I could afford the cash and calories. However, I have one small issue: You Guys can’t seem to find anyone who knows how to make pancakes. I’ve been to Bernie’s several times; and each time my pancakes are over cooked. This past Saturday, one of my pancakes was actually burnt. The little guy who makes the omelettes is awesome and on-point; and every other dish that’s in the buffet is made to perfection (those darn biscuits!). Just need you to get a griddle person who’s up to par with your standards.
I have been to the Bernie's in Glenside which I just love. So I was happy to get a chance to try this Bernie's. The food was just as good and although the decor and atmosphere is totally different, it was still a nice place to meet an old friend and catch up over really good food. It's a good addition to this Sansom St restaurant row.
This is just a good, easy enjoyable place. I went there with two colleagues for a business lunch and it was exactly what we needed. Casual (but not noisy) atmosphere, interesting and tasty food options and good service that’s attentive but doesn’t hover.
I was informed a couple hours before my reservation time that the kitchen would close 2hrs early (which was my arrival time). I asked to speak to the manager to convince him to keep it open at least by the time I arrive and to inform him that they should state that on the website. Upon arrival, ordering was rushed and of course the other half of my party that arrived shortly after 9 was unable to order or eat which was extremely embarrassing and lead them to leave for “Landmark” a restaurant up the street from “Bernie’s”. If this was any other night I wouldn’t have cared but it was my birthday, which made my experience terrible and very upsetting for the rest of the evening. Considering I work at UPENN I will not trust holding an event there and I will no longer promote the restaurant to my students or residents.
They ran out of ice tea and raspberry vinaigrette. Service was incredibly slow and TV's music were too loud. Food quality not great
The restaurant had great decoration and vibes, service was wonderful. However I chose this restaurant as the location of our work lunch because of all the yummy veggie/vegan options. However they were out of seitan which removed three of the possible menu items. I got a side of broccoli that was unseasoned and raw (so raw it was difficult to cut). Also they were out of their special which was what all my colleagues were hoping to order. Basically everyone at the table was unable to have their first (or second in my case) options because they were out. I was so excited for my lunch, I don't eat out often and now, even though I really want to try the seitan wings, I wont ever go back for fear they will be out of everything again and/or undercook their veggies. I like my veggies to have a little bit of a crisp still to them... but not uncooked and unseasoned completely!
Server was not attentive. She would ask for order and then look away- so we would have to repeat ourselves. Both steaks were over cooked. Fish (red snapper) dish was salty as was the succotash. Would not return.
The lunch menu was amazing! Great place to take family and friends. Check out their brunch on weekends!
The food was very good. I sat outside and got a little sunburn, but everything else was great!
Bernie's was able to accommodate our large, 10 person lunch group for an employee going-away event. Sara, our server, was terrific. I was happy that they automatically charge the tip to the bill for large tables, it kept me from having to figure it out at the end of the meal.
I personally had the crab cake Sammy. It was really good, and the half that I took home with me held up well for lunch the next day. Their French fries are really good. They describe them as steak fries on the menu, but they aren't as thick as typical steak fries, which pleased me.
It was a perfect time place for a farewell lunch - we could talk as a group or in pods - the food was great! We all are bummed we had to go back to work.
How I missed this adorable, perfectly priced brunch spot, with such an amazing atmosphere, and scrumptious food; I don’t know. However, I do know that it’s my new fave!
Food was just okay. Place was empty on a busy graduation night. Service was fine.
From the entrance of Bernie’s the first person I was greeted so very pleasant which was a great feeling it was. Wet and Chilly Day the Host was warm and welcoming The servers will smile and helpful the food was delicious. We had the best service and food was delicious Love Love it 100%The Best to me I have not enjoyed the food and service since 1975 You get 110% from me
After being seated, it took 15 minutes to be seen by a staff member. The waiter who came over did not apologize, and did not seem hurried in the slightest, instead acting incredibly disinterested. When he was pouring water, he put his hand across the lid before pouring it, completely unsanitary. Then he left without taking our drink orders. On top of all this, we had tried to book a baby shower here, but the lack of attentiveness and care in the response turned us elsewhere. It’s a shame that the ambiance is so nice, but the service does not match.
