Bistro on the Square
The kitchen team take their inspiration from the generous local larder and source ingredients from passionate producers based nearby, from which they buy fantastic ingredients such as local cheeses, wholesome fresh breads and quality meats from the Cotswolds region.
The Bistro has an informal atmosphere and is open seven days a week serving a range of sharing plates as well as every-changing specials. The Bistro Bar offers a wide range of wines by the glass, as well as an enviable Gin selection and Gin tastings available . A cocktail list is also on offer, with a choice of classics or something new to try.
Food quality was generally good though not astounding. The Bistro is heavily influenced by it's Gin Bar which has a long long list of Gins and mixers. If I was up for a night on the Gin it might have been a good experience.
Service was patchy - different people responsible for different things - one waiter to take you to your table, another to get drinks, another to take an order and another to deliver the food. Taking plates away before arriving with the next course was also not a strength.
Not all coordinated so drinks and food turning up at the table with the question ( "who ordered the ....." ). There were only 3 of us so it should not be difficult!
Both our meals were amazing - really, lovely flavours, and the service was excellent.
Fantastic dinner - we had flat iron chicken and orzo dishes. Great gin variety, we had the house fig gin and loved it so much we bought a tin to take home!
Food was very good, we both had Scallops to start followed by Duck breast as a main, which was delicious.
Very enjoyable dining experience. I would recommend this restaurant to friends and family.
An excellent meal on the last night of our stay in Chipping Campden. The pan-fried hake with octopus and artichokes was beautifully presented and delicious, as were the duck confit, the crème brûlée and the cheeseboard, which included a choice of four interesting cheeses. Service was friendly and professional. Prices were a little high but not extortionate for the quality of the food and presentation.
Easy parking, nice welcome and choice of seating even though we had booked. Very relaxed service but attentive. Great top of the line cuisine. Well presented, tasty and cooked properly. Nice and hot. Prices were average. Well recommended.
Front of house service was varied but generally very good but the number of errors made in the food order and also having to repeatedly ask for missing items was a little frustrating and embarrassing. One customers dinner order was completely forgotten and what’s interesting that the servers didn’t even notice that until the guest accompanying has almost finished her meal!!
The food was of good quality and presented well. The staff were very welcoming. The only downside was my wife's food was presented and mine did not appear. It turned out it had not been processed and by the time it was sorted out my wife had finished and had to watch me eat alone. Having said that the management did all in their power to make amends and we're very apologetic so what could of been a spoilt evening was avoided. Because of their positive response and the quality of the food I would recommend it to friends.
Dinner with family, overall food was very good. We had the short ribs and scallops. The only down side was the service was slow.
very good and tasty food on offer. the baked camamber is to die for, sorry about the spelling. the staff where knowlegable and friendly
When we arrived there was no one to greet us, although there were plenty of staff behind the bar. Service was a bit slow and delayed but the restaurant wasn't that busy. We were seated close enough to other people to hear their conversations. The food was okay, my meal was a little dry and lacked flavour, it needed a tasty sauce to give it life. We didn't have starters and chose a main with dessert. Both courses were on the small side and therefore we felt they didn't warrant good value for money. After we finished our meals and were ready to leave we struggled to get staff attention to pay the bill, so we just paid at the bar, which seemed to annoy the manager. Overall, it was a bit below satisfactory, I would expect more from an established venue. I wouldn't recommend this restaurant to a friend, instead I would direct them to another restaurant we ate at the night before, which we'd give 5/5.
The staff were friendly enough and the food was ok just not that special for the money. It seemed strange considering everything was cooked to order we wernt able to exchange new potatoes for chips. It was a handy venue as it was next door to where we were staying.
Very good meal at the bistro and special mention to Sally who was very friendly and provided excellent customer service. My partner was also impressed by the gin menu.
Very enjoyable. The only slight niggle was that we had explained we were there pre-concert although there was plenty of time for two courses. There was a lengthy delay with the creme brulee because they had to go out and buy some nuts! This was not mentioned until we started to get anxious about the time. Otherwise, lovely food and pleasant atmosphere.
Very slow service even though was more or less empty food lovely , but cocktails not good at all every one we tried wasn’t good and in general the Alcohol is very overpriced
Could do with some music that can be heard to improve the ambience
Super food in a relaxed setting. The staff were brilliant - very friendly, knowledgeable and attentive
Excellently cooked food at a reasonable price. Service was polite, friendly and efficient.
We had reserved a table and when we arrived there was some confusion as to where our reserved table was, so the greeting was poor and perhaps it would have been better to ask us where we would prefer to sit, there where plenty of staff and at some stage all of them served us but their organisation was poor, the chef is obviously talented and the food therefore good, decor is good and location excellent but ambience does not quite seem to gel, they need to give a little more thought to it and then the whole experience would be excellent
Very slow and inattentive service food was below average and expensive for small portions
Brilliant food and service! We enjoyed the atmosphere of the pub a lot! Had a lovely relaxing meal!
We had a fabukous meal, service impeccabke, mushroom risotto to die for!! Highly recommend.
We were very disappointed with Bistro on the square in Chipping Campden, we have been going to this restaurant for years on and off as far back as when it was Forbes. When we arrived, having booked the table in advance there was not a person in sight. We sat down and waited, eventually i went to the hotel reception to say we would like a drink. We were told they thought we were dining at the 'Fig' when we clearly booked for the bistro.
The waitress was very apologetic, however having arrived at 7pm we eventually got a drink at 7.25pm, despite only two people at the bar who arrived after us....
I ordered the duck which was nicely presented but luke warm, my husband ordered the roast turkey which he thought looked and tasted days old as if it had been cooked for Sunday lunch and this was now Tuesday. His gravy was watery. When ordering the turkey he asked if vegetables came with it and was told, no, so he ordered extra veg. only to find the meal did have vegetables and we now had extra....
I mentioned to the waitress that my food was cold, she again was apologetic, however i couldn't be bothered to have it re heated as by this time we were 'fed up'
The waitress was attentive and pleasant, however even when we asked for the 'bill' she said ' was everything alright with the meal' when we had told her it wasn't.
There were only two other diners in the restaurant that night so you would expect good service and food.
Very disappointing all round.
Had a lovely evening. Good service.
Not overly big portions of food, but tasty.
Lovely friendly staff who mad eus feel very welcome
This restaurant seems to have gone through some recent changes. We have returned three times recently and can say that the improvements have been constantly maintained. The food is excellent with regard to its taste, presentation and quality. The service is just right, pleasant, friendly and without in the incessant querying if our meal is all right. It would appear that there may have been changes in the management of the Bistro. If so, then congratulations to the new manager.
Excellent Bistro. Spoilt for choice at the gin bar. Really friendly knowledgeable staff.
As travellers from Australia we thought the food and presentation excellent.
Food ok but the sweet was not good pastry almost too hard to eat.
Excellent for morning coffee.
Stayed at the hotel for a birthday. The bistro is at the hotel. The waitress and barman where great. Found who we think was the manager a little odd. I took balloons in for the table for my mums birthday which felt like he thought was an odd request and he asked me to put them on the table instead of taking them off me. Also I asked if he could put candles in my mums dessert which also again seemed like I had requested something strange. We had predrinks in the gin garden where the tables needed a wipe and a general tidy. Also food on the floor in the restaurant which was still there the morning after as we walked through to breakfast. We had booked 2 hotel rooms, arrived in 1 car but no spaces. Plus points, good location, food was good.
Great location on a warm summer's day to finish walking the Cotswold Way
This restaurant was a great find. The food was excellent and the service the same. Would certainly come again when in this part of the country.
Lovely meal on a very warm evening, I ordered a starter for my main course, fresh asparagus with a crispy egg and a side order of heritage potatoes, delicious and perfectly cooked! The other people in my group had the chicken breast with mash and seasonal veg which they both enjoyed and rated highly
Very good service, great food and not to pricey
Very good all around
Went with my Husband for our anniversary. The food was lovely and the whole evening was very enjoyable.
Had a nice steak at the Bistro on the Square, the food was of a high standard and we'd go there again.
Excellent and imaginative food. Asparagus starter quantity was a bit small (but otherwise excellent dish); hake was a bit salty. Otherwise extremely good, and we felt we’d had a really good meal by the end of it. Staff were delightful.
Food really good and taste
Restaurant nice and cosy
Only downside one of the male waiters came across as abit of abrupt, this however didn't spoil the evening
Fantastic evening, great food, excellent staff, great atmosphere. Highly recommended
