Amazing food, friendly staff. Will be back again. Thank you x
Excellent food. Limited choice-perhaps because of covid-but a lovely meal was enjoyed by us both.
This was a special occasion, meeting my biological 1st cousin for the first time after our DNA was matched on a website. I was adopted.
The food as always was lovely, and I made a special request for something that wasn’t on the menu, and the kitchen fulfilled my request.
Kate, the manageress , and her team are brilliant and really lovely and friendly . One of the staff took photos of myself and cousin sitting at the table. And Kate very kindly took some photos for us outside. I can’t wait to come back for another meal, and I know my cousin is planing a stay at some point.
So thank you, to all the team at the Black Horse , you all went above and beyond for us yesterday.
This is definitely the best pub around for a great meal 😊
Overall the experience was very good, the setting and the grounds are beautiful and well kept, with amazing views in peaceful surroundings.
The menu was a little limited, and although we appreciate this may still be in place due to covid restrictions, we have seen wider choices in other restaurants since the lifting of restrictions on the 19th.
That said, the food served was great, service was very quick and all the staff were very pleasant.
We made the booking online through the website, which took our details and choice of dining inside or outside, we chose inside, however when we arrived the staff were taking us to be seated outside. You are also asked whether this is for an event, it was booked for a birthday, however there was no follow up on this, for example, an email or call to ask for anything special to be done - again not a deal breaker, I could have made the call myself, but it seems odd to ask for a reason other than it is for CRM for the website to remind me to book again for the same event next year.
The only other issue affecting the ambience was the high number of flies in the dining area, two couples seated next to us requested to move due to the inconvenience, there was nothing visibly in place to prevent this.
I am being picky, we will return and will happily recommend the food and service to friends and family.
Black pudding scotch egg starter absolutely spot on. I had a lovely steak ciabatta and swapped the fries for chips and thoroughly enjoyed them. Fish and chips also lovely and the smaller portion ample.
Service and the food were first class.
Unfortunately I can't rate anything from the black horse apart from one star- We were sat down on arrival and waited 30mins to be served- whilst others around us who arrived later were served before us. Eventually a waitress appeared and asked if we had ordered a wine, at this point I had told her we hadn't ordered drinks at all her reply was 'ah' and she walked off with the wine never to return. Myself and husband left after this. So so disappointed with the service. We can understand people being short staffed so were patient but when we got this reply from a member of staff who didn't acknowledge us at all we decided to leave. I so wanted it to be a positive experience but left bitterly disappointed.
Food was ok, not as good as it used to be. Staff were nice and friendly but service a little slow
The view and location was stunning!
The service great, staff brilliant and attentive!
Food was hot, good quality and brought out very quickly!!
Would go again and definitely recommend to anyone…
Found the menu too limited. I understand the constraints of covid, but why advertise an extended menu on the website. Surely its not that difficult to amend. Having said that, service was good, the surroundings beautiful. Will definitely return.
Although menu was reduced more choice woukd have been nice
Staff were lovely
amazing top to toe.. so same as always then!!
amazing for all the family
Having been here before a few times, I expected better and it was a let down, we ordered main course was told shortly after that my daughters could not have the quorn sausages , they are not vegetarian but just wanted the quorn sausages, the menu isn’t that expansive however then within 5 mins I ordered a starter, which came quickly, 5 mins later the main course arrived whilst I was still eating the starter, the main was just dumped on the table , I found what I thought was blue plastic in my starter, to which I was informed it was actually blue my kitchen roll ( as if that made it ok!) so that was returned, the mains where cold and not enjoyable, we ordered a jug of water for the table which arrived at the end of the main course after asking for it twice, two cups of tea where ordered which arrived with 2 teabags in each cup! And the expresso was tasteless, it was a bad experience to be honest, and we won’t be returning soon. Such a shame as this was a favourite of ours ..
We were regulars until Covid Few times service was poor but it seems sorted now. But disappointed there was no fish and chips or pork on menu. But what we had was lovely and hot And service was great well done !
Food was good. Service was poor. Had to ask 3 times where drinks were and was almost finished meal by drink came. Pretty much ignored by service staff
This was our second visit. Unfortunately on our first visit we did not get a table even though we had booked 2 weeks in advance for a birthday celebration. Upon arrival we were told there were no covered tables and a member of staff was ringing round to let people know as it was pouring down, we however hadn't received a phonecall or email but were offered a table in the pouring rain, we declined.
As this is somewhere we had wanted to visit for a while due to its stunning location we decided to give it a second chance. We did manage to get a table this time but once seated we were left for half an hour without anyone taking a drinks order or bringing menus. In the end a member of our party had to seek out a member of staff .
We got a brief apology and our orders were taken but the service was very slow, the staff were very inexperienced , we had to ask for cutlery and were only brought one set for four of us. Deserts were brought with knife and forks!
The location does not nearly make up for the very poor service, limited menu and lack of attention given.
To say it was a disappointment is an understatement!
Pleasant atmosphere Very relaxed Food was served extremely quickly and was delicious Staff extremely attentive and pleasant Would definitely recommend and visit again
Service was that poor we left. Cannot fairly review food/drink as we didn't consume any. Waited around 20 mins before leaving. We ordered drinks and asked for paper menus (as the QR code menu didn't work) and after 20 minutes nothing. The bar was littered with dirty glasses, as was the neighbouring empty table. There was also food/mess on the floor. This made for an unappealing experience. The Black Horse is quite expensive compared with other establishments in the area and it is obvious a lot of money has been spent decoratively however with the quality of service and slightly grubby/dirty surroundings at the time we visited we were left disappointed. More staff I think would help alleviate some of these issues.
Very busy venue with limited staff so service was understandably slow. Manager was graceful and provided complimentary drinks during delay. food was excellent
Walked to the restaurant from our hotel and we weren’t disappointed. The food was lovely, staff very welcoming and friendly my only disappointment was I couldn’t have dessert as I was too full after my starter and mains as the portions are large. Deft would recommend a visit and if we are ever back in the area will be returning.
Atmosphere was perfect, we were offered a large table in corner of restaurant. Welcome was somewhat lacking, in fact we didn’t get one, the waitress continued her conversation with her colleague and said ‘have you got a booking guys’ without even looking at us. We were shown to the table, told the menu was very limited and there was some issue with the chef. Waitress who served the table was brilliant. Welcoming, helpful, efficient and courteous. The menu was drastically limited. One of us is vegetarian and other than a cheese and something sandwich there was NOTHING else to choose from on menu. This really isn’t acceptable. We asked if anything else could be available but between the four people that appeared to be working in the kitchen we received a ‘no’. Initially at least, then we accepted the offer of a falafel burger…it was ok. The food overall was alright but unlike in the past did not warrant the price tag. Very mediocre experience and not to the standard we’d cheerfully anticipated from the black horse in the past. Time to get back on your game I’m afraid.
I was disappointed there was a reduced menu due to Chef shortages i already picked the Crispy Asian Steak Salad but it wasnt available!
The food was gorgeous and the service was great! Will definitely be returning :)
For the price you pay for a Sunday lunch the food was nothing to write home about.
Average was all you could say about it.
IT is a really nice place in interesting surroundings.
It was very obvious the majority of staff were very new and they need a lot more training.
All were friendly the atmosphere was good.
Nice outdoor seating area if you are lucky enough to have the weather for it.
I dont think the sunday lunch was up to the usual standard.
The service was a little slow but one of the team had called the previous day and had told us they had a reduced menu due to staffing issues so it wasn't unexpected. The team were polite and friendly. The food was delicious and reasonably priced. Will definitely revisit
Food was cold. Mushy peas looked like they had been around for days. Sausages were shrivelled and disgusting looking and were refused. We had to ask 4 times for some unbuttered bread. It took over 20 minutes for the bill to be produced. The system needed a waiter number and table number. The waiter number responsible for the table could not be found.
Booked well in advance for a surprise birthday meal for my fiance. Clearly it was limited capacity. We were shown to our table and given menus. 35 mins later we had to stop a waitress and ask if we could have some drinks. After asking for the drinks menu the tables behind us stopped her and ordered more drinks. Unfortunately it appeared that the extremely loud tables behind us were clearly much more important customers than me and my fiance, even though they were extremely loud and obnoxious. My fiance and I couldn't hear each other talking they were that loud. They were disrespectful to the waitresses and their discussions were extremely innappropriate for a dinner table while others were dining. Eventually after 45mins our drinks arrived. I then ordered our starters and mains. The starters came quickly and were speedily cleared away, the main course literally must have been ready and waiting by the time we had finished our starters. It was almost as if we were not wanted there. When I booked I was told I could only have the table for 1 and a half hours so I booked a return taxi. I had to rearrange as I presumed after 45 mins of waiting to get my first drink we would be late and there was no way I would have allowed them to remove us from the table after the poor service we had received. The food, I must say, was outstanding. The building itself was also very nice and is a lovely venue for a wedding, which was another reason I had booked as I am looking for a venue for our wedding. The waitresses did apologise for the wait but no reason was given. After this experience I will not be returning any time soon, I was really disappointed as I had heard nothing but excellent reviews about the place. Clearly we either weren't the right type of clientele or we simply weren't spending enough money.
Excellent food, service an lovely settings. Will be coming back.
The afternoon tea was such a disappointment from previous times. The coffee came in a cup and I had to ask for a pot. I asked for hot milk and got one very small pot then only got cold milk (still tiny portion) after that. The cheese scone was dry and crumbled so much I was unable to butter it so had to leave it. There was a cheesecake amongst the small cakes which must have been in the heat and was soft and mushy. I definitely will NOT be going back for afternoon tea!!!
A very busy day with a large christening party. Service a little flustered and hurried with no real customer connection. Requested food failed to arrive so my husband settled for what he’d been given. Food was tepid and tasted reheated and coffee served at the end was cold. Staff were run off their feet really. It’s a lovely place snd the setting is beautiful.,
Unfortunately the service was very poor. We had to request our table booking to three members of staff before being directed, then we had to request menus after sitting waiting for 15 minutes. The member of staff who brought the menus did not take a drinks order. Before we left, which was after 45 minutes of not being served by anyone, I once again entered the building to ask if someone would come and serve us, by the time someone came out we had decided enough was enough and wanted to leave. I explained to one of the staff why we were leaving and they were very apologetic, not all of the staff were as helpful as this particular member.
Shocking service. We will never go back. We have been twice now and both times the service was terrible - never again.
Totally ignored, waited an hour for menus, had to ask several times for someone to take our order. Drinks came after our food.
Why they have outdoor tables with no staff looking after them is beyond me! I would not recommend this pub - such a shame as it used to be really good.
Very disappointing. Whilst the manager was most apologetic for the poor service, my daughter's birthday meal was not what we'd expected. We ordered a bottle of wine, it arrived with no glasses from which to drink it. We asked for a jug of tap water, we were given a glass. This was replaced with a jug and we were 'asked' did we want some glasses to go with it!!!!!! One meal was completely missed from the order so my husband had to wait whilst the rest of the party ate our food. We had to ask 3 times for the children's drinks before they appeared. The tray of drinks was deposited nearest the children aged 3 and 4 and the food arrived on hot plates, again put next to the children (almost on top of the arms of one of them).
I understand the place was busy (a wedding in the marquee and a baby shower upstairs);
I understand the staff were newly trained (clearly more training is needed before they are let loose on the customers)
I understand that following recent events (pandemic) business owners need to recoup their losses but my view is they should not have stretched themselves so much that it led me to writing such a review.
I appreciate the efforts the manager made to reassure us it was a one off but I'm not so sure I will be returning in the future.
Fab food, helpful amiable staff, lovely atmosphere, picturesque surroundings. Would highly recommend
A must try place to visit. Food is delightful, staff very attentive.
A beautiful place to dine
The location of this venue is beautiful, but from the minute we walked in there were issues. The waitress who came to take our drinks order didn’t know what beers were available, one of the bar staff was clearly having a very bad day, he kept throwing bottle, each time making my party and the table next to us jump.
The starters were very tasty and we tried to overlook the poor attitude from the server, hopeful the main course would be as good as the starter. One of our main courses was set down in front of a customer on the table next to us, left for a few minutes, then presented to us, obviously we were not prepared to take food which had been sat in front of someone else. When we said that to the server (the same one with the poor attitude) he simply walked away, returning with food for the two other people in the party. Incidentally the food was not as ordered anyway and there was no comment about what was happening with the 2nd hand food.
We waited for a few minutes without any further information about the missing meal and eventually attracted the attention if the assistant manager. We chose to leave without touching either of the 2 main courses we had been given.
This was a very disappointing experience, I appreciate this is not a fine dining establishment but there are minimum standards of food safety and service that any venue should meet.
We will not be returning or recommending, despite the food appearing to be good.
Usually come here and love it however last night was on a complete other level numerous people walked out because of the wait for food service, quality of food, wrong orders been given etc. Such a shame as we usually really like it here. We waited just about 2 hours for dinner and drinks took an hour, once we got the food some was wrong and the quality was very poor
Menu remains very limited, food very nice but limited choice. I accepted this when the restaurant first reopened following lockdown, however, the restaurant has been popular and very busy every time we have visited, therefore it would be nice to have more choice.
An end of term staff get together. The staff at the Black Horse were very obliging, allowing us to change our plans at the very last minute. The food was delicious and the setting is stunning. It was a great evening. We will definitely come back.
