A few short steps from the British Museum, The Blue Door Bistro provides a welcoming and informal bistro-style setting. Light and airy at lunchtime, warm and cosy by evening, the room is decorated on three sides with a panoramic view of London circa 1849. Together with the rich mahogany panelled walls, effective use of mirrored glass, and contemporary wrought iron wall lights, an ambience rooted in the hotel’s location is beautifully achieved. Executive chef, Martin Halls, blends seasonal ingredients and herbs from our garden with classical techniques to create seasonal British menus. Our cuisine is commended with an AA rosette and accredited by the Sustainable Restaurant Association (2 stars). In all of our products, we only use free-range eggs and are committed to sustainable fisheries for our fish supplies. Our team are trained to ensure that your specific dietary requirements are catered for at all times.

Food was fine, staff very nice. The only slight problem was that the clotted cream with dessert was fine but the double cream had gone off. They were very apologetic & deducted it from the bill.

Nice eating environment. It serves traditional English food, well done. If you are looking for something that is original or inventive, however, this is not the place for you.

Good setting and friendly staff. Food was a bit disappointing for the price and the staff need a bit more training before being let loose on customers.

I was treated quite well as a solo and the food was definitely worth the price. I went for an unrushed lunch after visiting the British Museum. Dinner would be lovely here - it's the same menu. I chose lunch because of theatre tickets most evenings and I want a relaxed meal.

Excellent service, excellent ambience and nicely organised tables. First rate Barnsley Chop beautifully presented with fresh aldente seasonal vegetables. Lovely fresh little sweet buns with original cream fillings and chocolate sauce- very dainty and good value. Only criticism is of course London prices but for the standard of restaurant and the area the overall cost not too bad. We’d go again. Thank goodness for skilled and friendly continental staff, let’s hope we don’t frighten them all away over the next few years. We need them so much!

We wanted an enjoyable Sunday afternoon meal in a cosy setting in Bloomsbury before going on to an evening concert. So this bistro was a great find. The food was beautifully prepared and presented with well-sourced ingredients, flavours and seasoning. We were given 3 different types of salt flakes, though the chicken and Barnsley lamb chop were perfectly seasoned already. There were enough choices on the menu to suit our tastes for starters, mains and desserts and the staff were all very friendly and welcoming. I would happily return.

Very quiet for a Saturday lunch and we were the only ones in our dining room for most of the meal.
Server seemed inexperienced and struggled to open a bottle of wine, but she was friendly.
Black pudding scotch egg starter was tasty, but very rich and needed more aoli or salad.
Mains of trout and prawn stroganoff were nice enough but a little uninspiring.
South African Chardonnay was perfect for the range of food and not too expensive considering where we were.
Not somewhere we’ll go out of the way to go back to, but not bad overall and a perfect location when visiting the British Museum.

We had a delicious dinner at Blue Door, after cocktails on the terrace - don't miss the hotel bar and their signature pawprint cocktail. Ask for the restaurant's TDH (table d'hôte) menu - 2 courses £24. Interesting wine list with lots of choice by the glass. Lovely staff.

I booked a business lunch for 2 at the Blue Door Bistro and we had a very good experience. Service was extremely good, the food was fine (both selection and quality) and the décor is nice, cosy and traditional. It was surprisingly quiet for a Friday lunch time, but I assume that's unusual. I would definitely return if I needed lunch in Bloomsbury and it is also very convenient to the British Museum, so could be combined with a visit there.

The menu while traditional also had interesting variations on a theme such as the duck shepherds pie. Love the choice of salt with butter.

We had to spend a night in London and decided to try the Blue Door. We were happy with our choices - the food was healthy, well cooked and tasty. The service was good and the setting is pleasant although our table was a little too close to the next table so we could hear their conversations.
We would be happy to return

The restaurant was warm and welcoming with comfortable chairs and well spaced tables.
The staff were attentive and knowledgable providing a friendly efficient service.
I had a delicious cauliflour soup to start whilst my dining partner enjoyed mackerel which was presented beautifully.
I had a wonderful piece of haddock for my main while my dining partner enjoyed a very unusual potato topped duck pie.
We only had room to share a dessert, and that too was delicious.
There was a good wine list which covered all bases.
We thoroughly enjoyed our meal at Blue Door Bistro after visiting the British Museum, opposite which the Montague Hotel which houses the restaurant is sited.
We will be returning in the near future for another seasonally inspired meal.

This was a great find, the bar is great - there was a pianist and singer which added to the atmosphere - cocktails and food are good, service great.
The only downside was that we had cinema tickets and had to request speedier delivery of the food, this is probably a place to linger rather than rush out of.

We will definitely return

We had a long, 2 hour plus, business discussion over lunch. Food was pretty good and service a very good balance of attentiveness without being intrusive. Will certainly bear it in mind for future dining in the area. I thought it was a little pricey but not excessive and on the day a bit quiet so not great ambience but that didn't bother us and as noted service remained very good.

Quite stuffy in the posh English sense of the word. This is a restaurant that mainly serves the hotel clients. The garden was, apparently, completely booked while the restaurant was empty - so take the "eat outside in the summer" option with a inch so salt (of which they provided 3 varieties of different colours with the bread).
Food was fine enough and staff very friendly and efficient.

Stayed at hotel, Montague on the Gdn for the 10th yr in a row. Always, dine here at least once a trip. Tibor(mgr) and Jane, waitress couldn't do enough for us. Food and service were spot on. DH had chx soup, loaded w. noodles and chunks of white meat chx. I had goat cheese and berry salad. Both outstanding. DH had lamb and I had tuna burger. Very good. We opt to have coffee in Leopard bar area as opposed to outdoor seating since we wanted to listen to the pianist
Hopefully we will return again next year

This restaurant is part of the Montague on the Garden Hotel. Four of us dined here and each meal was delicious. The seafood salad appetizer was generous and tasty and the sirloin steak was tender and perfectly seasoned. The wait staff were friendly and accommodating which made for a memorable evening out.

A taste of Bloomsbury -- literally and metaphorically:
The promise of a foodie experience (and the proximity to our hotel) lured us to this restaurant. We did not regret it -- the food experience was a bit uneven -- the starter (torched scallops with bacon foam, vanilla cherry tomatoes and crispy kale) was exquisite as was one of the mains (tornados of beef fillet, beef marrow and potato croquettes, pea purée, glazed shallots and crispy capers). Two of the other orders did not live up to the promise: roast turbot with braised lentils, crispy potatoes, squid ink and a rosemary crumb -- and the dessert Baked Alaska.
But what added to the evening's experience was the lovely interior reminiscent of what the Bloomsbury group would have enjoyed. One friendly staff member gave me a little tour of their other spaces -- bar and tea rooms -- made me resolve to visit again for a cream tea or for a jazz performance.

A great place to have a really good meal in very comfortable surroundings. The service is very attentive, friendly but not familiar. The wine we had was very good but not the most expensive. For the quality and the location the price was very reasonable. We would go here again for a special occasion and would reccomend others to do the same.
