Boathouse 4 Bar & Restaurant
Unfortunately despite a lovely waitress the food was disappointing. Steak Frites stone cold. It’s a shame as there is so much potential, great location but not enough to compensate for poor food
We visit Portsmouth frequently. Our last lunch in the Boathouse was in January - the place was full, the ambience jolly and staff busy yet still attentive. The menu was limited but very inspiring - our choices were delicious, well presented and received surprisingly quickly considering tables were either full or rotating with new customers.
We attended last week. There was hardly any customers there. As we were seated, the table behind had complained of the time taken to receive their order, an offer of complimentary drinks was declined and they asked for further reduction on their bill). Within two minutes the adjoining table sent one of their drinks back (cloudy beer). The waitress came to us, took our drinks order, and returned very quickly with them. The menu was a shadow of it's former self. Our starter was bread and olive oil with balsamic - it arrived on a board - boring, flavourless, cold and without plates. A few herbs on top and five mins in the oven may have given it life. Our mains took fifty minutes to arrive (chicken caesar salad and lamb kofta) exceptionally long considering so few customers.
To be fair, I was felt more unwell and went outside for fresh air. I phoned my wife, asked her to pay and leave as I was becoming quite unwell. I cannot comment on my meal as I didn't eat any of it. My wife said there was no chicken in her chicken salad!!
I have no idea if the owning company has changed, whether the chef was absent or other staff were covering in the kitchen. The previous visit was faultless and this was dire in comparison.
Our second time at this venue. One of the party had special dietary requirements which were noted on booking and were acted upon on arrival. The food arrived promptly and was enjoyed by all 4 in the party, the service was affable and our recommendation to our fellow diners was justified.
We tried this restaurant as it advertised it offered dietary options. My companion is dairy and egg free but does eat meat
They adapted the vegan burger option to replace the vegan burger with a beef one and checked that the guacamole and tostada starter was dairy free for us. The food was hot and tasty and the portion sizes generous. We will definitely visit again
I am a regular user of Boathouse 4 and always find it a pleasant experience with kind and attentive staff. Thank you. Bill Oliphant
Booked for Mother's Day, thoroughly enjoyable experience. Lovely setting, attentive staff, great food, and a glass of bubbly! What more could a girl ask for. Will definitely visit again.
Went here for Mother’s Day lunch. Excellent location, food was great. Portion sizes were perfect. Staff were friendly and attentive. Spot on.
A lovely restaurant to make a day at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard a bit more special. Food is delicious and definitely worthy of being a restaurant in its own right, rather than just as an eatery for the Dockyard, which the prices also reflect. The service started off well, but as the restaurant filled up at lunch time the service became very slow. We were left with empty drinks, plates that weren't cleared, no time left for desert and ending up going to the bar to pay. A great restaurant, but more staff/ quicker service needed!
Food was ok, we had burgers which were nice. Children had fish goujons which unusually they weren’t keen on- think the fact the skin was left on put them off. Service was stretched. We were in there nearly 2 hours just to eat burgers! Took them 25 min to bring desert for the children. Overall I would recommend if you aren’t in a rush. For us, we’ve eaten there before and it wasn’t that slow. I would be hesitant about going there again purely because of the slowness of the service.
Lovely view and good food, just let down by slower than expected service and a long wait to pay.
A very enjoyable lunch before Christmas. Helpful staff, not rushed Delicious food. Would recommend.
Good food, good service and stunning view across the harbour. Fairly limited menu though - would appreciate more choice of desserts.
Good service. Crab starter very good. Beef main meal adequate but I hoped for better. Cooking was fine but just not very tasty. We arrived at 2pm mid October, so the place was very quiet. Not spectacular views but better than just facing a wall.
Always a really nice experience but the service was slow and hard work despite not being busy. That said the staff were nice. Just slow and hard work.
I’ll be back however as it’s too good to be put off. But please up your game re service efficiency.
Lovely view and plenty of boats and shops to watch. Service rather slow though.
Open Table screwed up on my first time using it. Open Table said booking confirmed but restaurant had no record of booking! Fortunately a table was available for our party of 4 and the dining experience and food were very good. But I will not risk booking through Open Table again - safer to phone the restaurant I think.
Interesting venue in a great location. Would definitely recommend!
Food was decent service was erratic it was noisy with lots of small children, high point was the starter of mushrooms, one starter was spoiled by the addition of coriander that wasn’t mentioned on the menu I would use the restaurant again
All staff were excellent as well as food, would certainly recommend.
The food was mostly good but the barley risotto was a very misleading description. Risotto means made with rice so we were astonished that the dish contained only barley and no rice.
Came with friends from out of town while browsing the dockyard. A real hidden gem! Lovely interior, starters great, burgers were delicious, kid-friendly, happy friends!
A lunchtime get together with a difference. Unusual setting in Portsmouth Dockyard. Really friendly and helpful staff. Love coming here for lunch as a couple or with friends
On a freezing sunny day, a lovely lunch in scenic, historic
surroundings was much appreciated. The service and ambience was excellent and, as the wintry storm clouds rolled in, it was quite difficult to leave! We shall return once again to enjoy the experience in , hopefully, warmer conditions!
Excellent fish and chips. Friendly and prompt service.
Our lunch was a present from our son and family in Australia, who found the restaurant while on holiday last year, when visiting the dockyard. We had a table by the window with an excellent view of the harbour and the Warrior. Service was to a high standard. Our meals were very enjoyable. Will certainly recommend.
Very good food. My elderly father very much enjoyed his lunch. The lift was out of action which caused issues but the venue is great.
Great location with views of HMS Warrior and the harbour, coupled with modern comfortable decor and furniture. Food was very good, although the vegetarian options could do with a little more imagination. The Sunday roast was much enjoyed. Desserts excellent especially the coffee and doughnuts - great idea. Will be back.
A mixed bag - salt and pepper squid, greasy with neither salt nor pepper but a delicious ham hock terrine. Fantastic chicken roast with heritage carrots (beautifully cooked but cold) but a lack lustre fish and chips. Wine average. Location, decor, comfort and service very good.
We had a lovely meal with our small grandson would have liked a salad on menu but food was excellent
We arrived for our 1 pm booking to be told food would be slow in coming due to a large group needing do be served-which took some time for their main course- thfurther delay when desserts were brought to the table. It would have better to have changed the time of our booking by 30 mins.
Booked for lunch having fixed to do the Mary Rose Museum. Friendly greeting. Relaxed service (possibly just a little too relaxed). Food not spectacular but perfectly adequate for lunch. We indulged in a beer to go with the meal. Nice to have a different choice.
had lunch with my mum for her 80th birthday we were greeted with big smiles and very polite staff
the fish&chips was amazing we had a sea view and really enjoyed it
it was nice to be able to sit and talk as no loud music playing
already planning another trip to here
