Great find! Lovely spot in a historic street for a quiet dinner/lunch. Compact menu with each of our selections cooked with care and attention. Also, check out their wine list - full of hidden gems!
We started with the scallops and morcilla and had the Cote de Boeuf for mains. Both were excellent.
Although it had great reviews we were VERY disappointed. We had cote de boeuf and a small chateaubriand between four of us and the chateaubriand was blue not medium rare. Meat tasted ok but proprietary mustards and horseradish disappointing. Should have offered a homemade béarnaise and even a salsa to really complement the meat. Vegetables mediocre and overall nothing exceptional at all I’m sorry to say.... except the size of the bill! £45 each for a few slices of meat, couple of spuds, a bit of broccoli, hunk of (lovely) bread and 1 1/2 glasses of wine. At the end of the meal we were told the credit card machine wasn't working and were asked to pay in cash, which is rather an unusual request as few people carry that amount of cash on them! Won’t be going again, so many other delicious places in the vicinity.
Well managed restaurant with simple, fresh, seasonal menu and good service. Great choice for business lunch or after work dinner.
We were surprised to be the only people in there. My scallops were nicely done if rather bland. My guest asked for his steak to be well done, and it was. His problem not mine. I can't for the life of me remember what my main was and we shared a generous cheese board. Decent wines at a reasonable price, then upwards to as expensive as you like. The host gave us an extra glass on finishing. I suspect we did not see the best of it and I was not paying I am unaware of the value for money but I will give it another go one evening.
We have eaten at this restaurant on a few occasions and it is always very good, both in the food that is offered, although not a very big menu, and also the attentive and friendly service. We had a lovely bottle of rose wine from Provence to go with the meal. I would recommend this restaurant to everyone and it is certainly the best place to eat in the Barbican/Smithfield area.
Lovely little restaurant tucked away in a quiet street. Food was good and the service was professional but friendly. A limited menu but that was fine. It usually means food is freshly prepared as this was. The only negative was that we felt it was a little on the pricey side.
The food was of high quality and the service very good throughout. Value was good, albeit at the top end of our comfortable price range.
This was a pre-theatre dinner booking. Food was excellent and service was superb. Could not fault it at all and the location is lovely. A hidden gem. Loved it!
Really excellent gem of a place; great food tucked away down a quiet back street. You should go.
Fantastic quality of meat - mind you, being that close to Smithfield.... chateaubriand and cote de boeuf both excellently cooked and tasty and tender, washed down with the Maitre D’s red wine recommendation - a full Italian red which I can’t remember beyond that. A special and personal experience
Great meal at Bowling Bird as always! The two men in our party had the chateaubriand which was superb. Another had the risotto which was also fab. Great wine list and some very unusual beers. We finished with some amazing desert wine, sticky toffee pud and cheese! Awesome night, would definitely recommend.
great food...even better steaks!!! great selection of wines....
We had a really delightful experience. It’s a really lovely space and the service couldn’t have been more friendly. We had a selection of tapas-like starters and everything was delicious. Can’t wait to go back for the amazing sounding main dishes.
Great little restaurant off the beaten track. Host was very happy to helpful and friendly. The menu is small but they had some nice options. I had the fish stew that was delicious.
Very relaxed atmosphere serving outstanding fresh food in a thoughtful simple clean way. Definitely go again when in London
First visit to the Bowling Bird and we will be back. Friendly and efficient service, good menu and reasonably priced.
Excellent afternoon at Bowling bird
Great food and service
I have meetings nearby and walked past a few times. Went in there with a friend and were delighted by the quality, the off grid frontage and the friendliness.
First time we had been here. A warm welcome on arrival which continued throughout the evening. The food was superb as was the wine.
All in all a great experience. Definitely eat there again.
Outstanding service and food. Highly recommended. Hidden gem
Very quiet weekday evening. Only 3 tables occupied. Attentive service. Very short menu but everything we tried was very tasty. Extensive wine list. Complimentary glasses of port because it was my birthday!
Food and service were great as owner/waiters were very acccomodative and the food was expertly prepared. The meat was fantastic as were all the starters we shared. I highly recommend trying it as you wont be disappointed.
Great food, drink and service, asl always. Such a chilled place, is naturally cool and wholeheartedly recommended
Tucked away on a side street, this restaurant is a real find. Service was fantastic as was the food, all reasonably priced. There aren't too many covers so its nice and quiet and speed of service is just right. Highly recommended.
Great place. Haute cuisine in a lovely, sophisticated (but not po faced) restaurant with friendly and efficient service. You won't be disappointed.
Overall a great little place. A few more medium priced wines needed for those of us not on expenses but otherwise great
Small menu but what is on offer is lovely , lovely staff, great wine and the place is cosy - you do not feel like you are in the City which is fabulous!
Enjoyed a night. Quite quiet and a shorter menu than expected but the food was delicious and service was attentive but not invasive. Very happy overall
Great restaurant, can't be faulted at all. Really good food, service and would highly recommend.
We had a wonderful meal here. As we are not meat eaters the 3 of use order a fish main course and a lot of apps and sides and turned the meal into a tapas feast. Food was fresh, full of flavour and well presented. Service was friendly and informative. So glad we went. When we returned the next morning in search of a lost hearing aid they could not have been more helpful.
Really lovely food. My shelled prawns were a great starter and we had a chateaubriand for three which was delicious and tender. A friendly and knowledgeable Irish owner who offered an alternative more expensive red for the same price as the sold out one we had chosen. A super local restaurant for us that we would gladly recommend.
I was pleasantly surprised by this restaurant.
The food was very good. The lamb was excellent and perfectly cooked.
The service was also excellent and very personable. The athmosphere is cosy and relaxed.
I would definitely recommend this restaurant and I will return.
Great find - warm and intimate little place with a really friendly welcome from the owners. Best lamb I've had in London this year and excellent wine list full of hidden gems. Highly recommended.
Another fantastic visit here, great food & service as always can’t recommend enough.
This was our first visit to Bowling Bird. It proved to be an excellent choice for a quiet lunch with a couple of friends: reasonably priced and a good standard of food. The service was friendly and non-intrusive.
What a wonderful evening - absolutely delicious food, wine, great service and a lovely atmosphere. Really recommend.
It was the worst meal we’ve had in a long time.
The calamari was bland and flavourless.
And even worse was the lamb. It was not seasoned and was cooked very poorly.
Our server did comp the wine and mojito.
Best lamb I’ve had in ages.
