Steak tartar was amazing. All of our meals were very good and waitress couldn't have been more attentive. Can't wait to go back.
What a wonderful dinner!
We had an exceptional evening. Everything was perfect. Highly recommend this restaurant to everyone.
Found the place very interesting and beautiful. Food was okay, the chef’s special was already done when the waitress came back to take our order. My companion described the food was overcooked and to much pepper in the pasta. I asked for salmon and got duck. Quietly confused our server. We had one of the owners coming to our table, a very polite lady, she gives us reasons and ask for feedback. Dessert was absolutely delicious.
Box Hill is a beautiful historic mansion that is very large so we felt very safe and separated from the other customers. The food was outstanding. Our server was very attentive, always with a smile (I could tell even though she was wearing a mask). The entertainment was a talented man on a guitar, singing a wide range of popular songs. Extensive wine list. It was a great night and for a moment the world felt "normal" again! Will return this weekend.
After 45 minutes waiting for a drink, we finally left. We didn’t even get to order. Went there for Valentines Day and heard several other couple comment about the poor service as we left. Very frustrating night as it was too late to get in any other places. Will never return.
We decided to go there for Valentine’s Day. They had a fixed price menu at $60 per person with several choices for each course. The building is beautiful. We were seated in what would have been the dining room and noticed there are several rooms of seating on the first level. The building was beautifully decorated and we had high hopes for a great evening.
We received water immediately after being seated and the bread came out a few minutes later. It was 15 minutes before our server stopped by. She took our drink order and then it was another 8 minutes before she came back to take our food order. Steve’s soup and my salad came quickly but we then waited a while for the appetizer course. We didn’t receive our drinks until just before the appetizers arrived and the manager who brought them wandered around a bit before finally deciding they were supposed to come to our table. We couldn’t tell how full the other rooms were but only half the tables in our space were occupied. As we waited for our entre, one couple got up and left, then, as we were eating, another couple gave up and left, having not been waited on at all. Several times I noticed servers walking around with plates of food trying to figure out what table to take them to.
Our food was just ok. Chicken Saltimboca should be made with cutlets, not a whole chicken breast. The meat was dry. I estimate that my food would total $45 - 50 on a regular menu. Certainly not $60. To make it worse, they put a 20% gratuity on the check. I guess they figured that was the only way to get a tip. We were there for over two hours and as we left, another couple was also leaving, feeling thoroughly disgusted by the experience. We compared notes and agreed we would not be back.
This was the worst restaurant experience ever. When we arrived thete was a long line at the hostess desk. There seemed to be a problem with nearly everone's reservation. Despite the limited Valentine's Day menu, we were repeatedly brought food for the other 4 tables in our area, to include being served salads after we'd finished out entrees. After finishing our entrees and the dishes being cleared, other that being brought other's food, we were ignored for at least 40 minutes. We were then brought a check despite not having received our desserts. When the desserts were finally served, we were given no flatware. I had a teaspoon that was given to me with my iced tea (?), and my husband ate his with his hands. The check then arrived again, and unbelievably included a mandatory gratuity. I guess that's what you have to do when your service is so poor. And no, it was particularly crowded (many open tables).
Reserved a table from here but was sat at the bar a little disappointed as it was a birthday dinner.
Arrived to find NO ONE at the hostess station, but did see our name on the reservation book for the incorrect number of people. Waited, waited, waited... finally went looking for a staff member. There was a wedding reception happening on the first floor, so we wandered through trying to find staff. Nothing. Finally wandered downstairs and found someone to seat us. Then we waited.... waited for menus, waited for anyone to come back for drink orders and then waited a VERY long tine to get any drinks.
Dinner orders started out well - appetizers were good. But then entrees arrived. My husband and our friend ordered the pork shank special which was so dry and tough, it was inedible. We waited for our waitress to come by to check on things, but she never came back so we went to the bar and asked her to please come to the table. Entrees were replaced and he chef came out to apologize, saying they just didn’t come out right this time. So then, why were they served to guests if you knew they were bad?
I will say, the crab cakes and scallops were both delicious.
We then ordered after dinner drinks. 3 of the 4 drinks were delivered. We watched the waitresses/bartenders make the 4th drink and set it on the bar. It sat there, and sat there, while the waitress stood in front of the computer screen and kept swiping between pages. We finally went to the bar and asked if this was her drink? “Oh, yes! Was just about to bring it.” So I turned and went back to the table. And she turned and went back to the COMPUTER! After another 2 or 3 minutes she brought the drink.
When the check arrived, I provided my credit card. No one came back for it. Again, waited and tried to catch her attention. Nothing. So I finally walked it to the bar (which seemed to be the favorite hang out spot). She looked at me and said “thank you” and just took it. I pointed out that the credit card needed to be run. “Oh, ok”. Waited another 10 minutes, never again. Extremely disappointed. Expected better.
Had to be seated in downstairs pub, not very attractive. Food and service mediocre.
Adjoining table was not cleaned after party left.
Won’t be back.
Box Hill is a place everyone who hasn't visited for a dinner should go visit. And those who have visited will quickly realize it's worth putting into a rotation of restaurants to go to when looking for great food and friendly service. And no, I am not an employee of Box Hill/Regent's Glen. I have not been disappointed in the food or service since I started going there on Friday/Saturday nights (to the pub downstairs). It literally is York's best kept secret restaurant...but, the more visitors, the secret will be out of the bag. I recommend visiting before it starts to get too crowded to get the full vibe of the place.
