Myself and partner found this place online and the reviews convinced us to book.
We ordered a large ribeye, medium rare for sharing along with a portion of skinny fries and minty peas. The steak itself was well done which was disappointing, although we did still enjoy it.
We never ate starters or dessert, so when a bill of £100 arrived, my jaw almost hit the floor. The steak itself was £62, and due to the weight and size of the bone, was more like a steak for one person.
Very disappointed to have had to pay so much for a very average, over cooked steak.
Great little restaurant. The staff were friendly and helpful. The sirloin steak was cooked to perfection the rosemary fries were too. Generous portion sizes. I would definitely recommend. One thing I woulda say is that the restaurant itself was a little too hot but I think that may have been where we were sitting and the fact that it was the hottest day of the year.
We usually like Boxcar, but both steaks overdone. Sides were delicious, and drinks were good. Don't get a date night often, kinda disappointed.
My first time at Boxcar and was very impressed. Seems like an obvious idea to attach a restaurant to a butcher and I wasn't disappointed with my sirloin steak which was top drawer. Excellent chips, some English mustard and three bottles of excellent Wimbledon ale and it was a perfect lunch.
Superb meal had by 4 of us. The T-Bone 800gm was incredible as was the Prime Rib and Hamburger. Would not hesitate to recommend it!!!
Great food, great people and really good value in an otherwise expensive city. Highly recommend
Pleasant enough room/decor made memorable by excellent service and great food (off a surprisingly short menu). Buying your steak by the 100g is always a quick way to get a surprise when the bill comes but our choice was 110% - great flavour, cooked exactly as requested. I went expecting a burger joint pretending to be more and got a friendly restaurant which knows how to cook what it clearly likes.
Menu is very meat heavy, as you would expect. We were uncomfortable...we wanted a relaxed family Sunday lunch but were taken to a table with stools, which meant we didn’t linger. Wouldn’t bother going back...cooking is good but I want a seat!
My friend heard about Boxcar online via the food bible, so we thought we'd give it a try. It did NOT disappoint!! The food was amazing - cooked to perfection and tasted delicious! The service was also very good - the staff were attentive, and our waiter was able to explain each cut and recommend an ideal share-size steak for us. They also had a great selection of wine, and a very chilled out atmosphere.
A very minor negative was that when we looked at the bill in more detail we realised that we had been mistakenly charged for an extra glass of wine, but given the quality of the meal, this would not stop me going back in the future.
I was recommended to this restaurant by a friend and so I dragged along three of my buddies who are all meat eaters to this very well appointed restaurant in central London. The food was absolutely delicious, and plentiful, it wasn’t too noisy like a lot of restaurants out today, so we all enjoyed good conversation . The only criticism, is The waitress we had was very limited in her understanding of questions we asked especially over confusing boards on the wall. I’m Fortuny her English was not very good, and so we had to get somebody more senior and English speaking to explain what was what. That certainly would not put me off going back
Sounds dramatic but I reckon that was the best burger I’ve EVER had ANYWHERE. I’m in my 40s so have had a few over the years too! Really delicious and the beer was superb too.
Lovely food - great experience
I love Boxcar, food is great, service is good, and the venue itself is very nice. If you want a good steak then this is absolutely the right place, but they do also have healthier and vegetarian options. Definitely worth giving a try.
The Boxcar has a really nice feel to it and only small issues hold it back. Improved seating (position, % of table sizes, etc) and menu (currently to narrow)
Great food and service. Nice setting. My only negative would be that the chairs and bench are not very comfortable.
Great place to have a decent dinner with friends/date/family any day of the week. Some tables are worse than the others but overall I would recommend it. One waiter (male) has bit of an attitude problem (second time served by he same waiter felt the same way, only writing this time because I gave it benefit of the doubt thinking that might be one off or a bad day but apparently it wasn't :) But the other personnel are very good so I can not fault the service by one persons attitude. Tasty meats and nice drinks...
Great place. Food is wonderful. Very accommodating. Best place I’ve ate in London marble arch area
I have been here before and will be back. A great little restaurant with friendly staff, delicious food and drink. I love it here
Extremely over priced food . Ordered a Chateau B steak medium rare which came well done
Two burgers, one steak and a salad with soft drinks came to over £180
We enjoyed the steak and burger. They were very good. Music was a little loud but service was good.
Fantastic place. Staff friendly, service good, food excellent. Would recommend the Cote De Boeuf.
Shared a 750g piece with my hubby and was plenty for us. Wasn’t hungry after but still had a sneaky dark chocolate tart yum.
Big fan of this place! I’ve only visited twice, both on Sundays for their lovely Sunday roast. The meal included a free bottle of wine which is a winner. Staff were friendly and nice. The only disappointing aspect was they ran out of lamb! Which was around 7pm. Will definitely be visiting again anyway!
This is a very good restaurant for steak, in a nice location. There is an excellent bar menu as well, with unusual and very good cocktails, and a decent selection of good wines.
Lovely little restaurant. Delicious food, very polite staff and nice ambience. We ate quite early at 6pm post-theatre and it was a very relaxing meal. Wish we could have stayed longer but had a train to catch. Would definitely recommend the restaurant.
Highly recommended for meat lovers and the burger is one of the best in London.
Really good evening! The food is very reasonably priced and quite delicious - ENORMOUS tasty burgers coming in at £10. Had some delicious salads too. I think we chose some rather expensive wine so would suggest watching out for that if you are after a VFM evening! The service was attentive - however we had to ask a couple of times for a couple of things.
Totally delicious steak, in my top two and I like a nice steak! Great service with very nice, friendly staff. Looking forward to going again!
The intimate atmosphere attentive relaxed staff and focused menu made this a perfect choice for our last dinner in London. My wife and I wanted a nice dinner out for the last evening and selected the t-bone and two veg sides to share. The steak was perfectly prepared and delicious and the meal was a perfect change after a couple of days of fish and chips etc. I highly recommend and will return next time I’m in London.
The food is delicious and I was really looking forward to it thanks to a friend recommendation. However, portion are so tiny that we both left the restaurant still hungry! When we read the menu at home we thought "uh, nice restaurant with normal prices, it's a win!", then we changed our mind. Charging that much for such portions is upsetting! Leaving a restaurant still hungly is upsetting! And it's a shame because food is amazing and the meat is one of the beast I've eaten in London in a while.
Please, review your portion!
Cool place, great brunch, good quality meats.
Nice ambience. Handy location!
Food was amazing. Best meal we had in London. Steak was cooked and seasoned perfectly and our drinks and sides were just as awesome. Great farm to table restaurant. Can’t wait to return!
Brilliant food and atmosphere. Staff are very friendly and helpful.
This was my first visit on the recommendation by a colleague - not disappointed ! Great atmosphere, food and service. Highly recommend and will be returning.
Good food and atmosphere but very slow service from kitchen
Waiter was very nice, polite and tried to manage the long waiting time
I had a fantastic meal at Boxcar. The service was excellent and friendly, real hospitality. The menu simple and tasty. The scotch egg is amazing and the steaks very juicy. Will definitely go again.
Boxcar is definitely for beef lovers, vegetarians should stay away, the options with the side (vegetarian) is not tempting enough for dinner or lunch.
We have been there for the second time and the quality of the beef (different cuts) is really outstanding. If you are not up to rib-eye, filet or other cuts, the burger is also great.
The sides we had are spiced differently and jersey potatoes or broccoli are a good choice for the steaks.
Finally the desert we had is great, tempting and tasting.
As last Time: attentive waiter, delicious food, reasonable prices.
I wonder what happened to the points you usually get on open table by booking through them ...
Lovely food and great value! Would highly recommend the steak
Heard by colleagues of this small business but never made it there until pouring rain and hungry kids catapulted us there yesterday for burgers. The personnel was extremely attentive, knowledgeable and friendly - the food was simply delicious. Definitely recommended, my new go to place for a good steak, a decent burger or any meat related dish like homemade beef jerky.
Everything was wonderful, particularly the atmosphere. The combination of fine meat and red wine is always a winner but here in particular it was very special.
