Brigade Bar & Kitchen
First, it is a British inspired Bistro serving delicious, seasonal, sustainably sourced dishes. Second it is a training kitchen which provides apprenticeships that help the homeless develop skills and motivation to find employment.
The Fire Station on Tooley Street is one of the oldest in London and was built following the Great Fire of Tooley St as part of the Metropolitan Fire Brigade in 1879 to save lives and protect property. Today, we’re using the same values of business sense and social responsibility to make it a vibrant and authentic venue.
The atmosphere is fun, informal and focused on food. It’s the perfect place for an evening with friends and family, to entertain clients over lunch or simply enjoy a cocktail after work. Come and visit us to savour some classic, British ingredients served up in a warm, engaging atmosphere.
Everything was just about “ok” but nothing was amazing. Walked past this place every week for over a year finally got round to trying it out. Don’t realise it was a smoke house. Not to my taste but that’s my problem not theirs, but other things like Smoked cauliflower cheese - little cheese sauce, lots of smoked cauliflower not great. Not one I’ll be returning to, but equally I can understand why others would.
Great, menu limited but food and drinks are good- fabulous ethos
The visit was a special occasion, a chance to meet up with friends. We loved the menu. I am keen to support the work and values that underpin the Brigade.
Not ideal for kids
Nice restaurant with contemporary decor. I understand the inspirational sentiment of 'Beyond Food' and helping the homeless. The waiters were a little nervous and the food order was incorrect but overall the lunch was tasty.
We had high hopes for Brigade Bar & Kitchen - reviews great and photos made the place look fun and vibrant. But the reality sadly wasn’t so. In terms of ambience it’s more like an airport feel restaurant, lacking in any sort of authenticity or life, like a hotel restaurant. It seemed a bit “textbook” and naff. Although the staff were friendly, unfortunately service was slow and strange. They actually forgot our order and it was a good hour or so before we got our food. I did ask after about 30mins or so if our food was coming and the waitress said yes and went to check - I turned around to see the chefs scratching their heads looking confused. I could tell they’d lost our order, so instead of telling us the truth they said nothing. The waitress never came back, instead 15min later I had to ask again, they then said it was “plating up”, it then was another 5/10min before we actually got food. We had literally watched people walk in after us, eat and leave! The veggie breakfast was completely overpriced. £11 for a tiny serving of quite cold food. Apparently the buttermilk chicken brioche was “ok but nothing special”. On a positive note, with all the waiting we had to do we had a great catch up with our cousin and her new baby!
The food was excellent. We had a goat stew and it was excellent. We hadn’t ordered a starter as we thought it might be heavy. It was a perfect amount and left room for dessert .
Great atmosphere and the work they are doing within the community is remarkable and the quality of food was outstanding. Will defo be back!
All good, didn’t blow me away but I like the ethos of this place and the food was solid especially the mackerel. Lamb chops good but the fat wasn’t rendered down that well so a bit chewy. But everything else was nice and great smoked almonds that we had with drinks to start
A really great find on the south bank of the river a five minute walk from Tower Bridge. Excellent restaurant with tasty, well prepared food, attentive service and a good atmosphere.
Excellent vegan stew! Friendly service and good value for money- will definitely go back.
Excellent food, really good standard and good selection on menu to suit all tastes.
We were a group of 8 and were seated in a room on our own which was much appreciated as we were able to chat easily. There is a bar area which was very well supported on the Friday evening we visited. Our Waitress was first class, really excellent service No complaints at all, everyone enjoyed the evening and everyone was impressed by the quality of the food and service. Will definitely return again and also for lunch, so good to support a independent restaurant and not a Chain!
The fun part for us as a group, our great grandfathers had served as firemen there in 1900...how things change!
Great atmosphere! Love this place and everything about it - Staff are always lovely.
Great place, staff really attentive and very good. Although not a massive choice what was on offer was a good range. The food was good and very well presented. My only downside comment would be on the cost of the wine, although what we had was good it was not worth £36 per bottle.
Not enough members of staff. I had to wait a while before anyone noticed that I was waiting to be seated.
The restaurant is in a converted fire station and has a lovely ambiance. The food was excellent value, I recommend the mushroom soup, the best I have tasted. We had a lovely evening and could chat easily with friends across a round table. Would recommend this restaurant as value for money with excellent service.
Went to the Brigade Bar in between 'day and night' visits to The Shard. It is close by and filled the 2 hours beautifully. Food and service very good
The service was extremely slow. When we entered the restaurant there was nobody at the front desk so we had to wait for 5 minutes before one of the bartenders finally realized that we were waiting to be seated.
Food wasn't that good! The waitress was slow and careless. She did not bother to come around and asked how we were doing.
Overall, I would NOT recommend this restaurant. It was a waste of our time and money.
We enjoyed the meal and would probably go back. Easy reach of london bridge station.
Nice seasonal touches on the menu. The food was very well cooked and attractively presented. Polite and friendly service, and a relaxed atmosphere.
We attended Brigade for Breakfast. The food was fine but it took far too long for it to be served. This needs to be sorted out as the restaurant wasn't even that busy.
Long delays even though it was empty, small portions (breakfast). Tasted good but just too small.
Very enjoyable dinner. Food was very good and the service too. Good choices on the menu and the kitchen coped well with a food allergy. The wine list is changing so we had a reduced selection of bin ends. Not an issue, we had a couple of bottles of a very nice red at a very reasonable price.
Have been to the Brigade Bar and Restaurant a few times now and it always a great choice. Lovely food, very well presented and good value. It's also great that you can feel as if you are really contributing to social enterprise as well as having a lovely night out - they are really focussed on giving people a new chance with great training and it really seems to work.
Went for business breakfast. Only one other table in use, feels more bar, than bistro like. Front door feels like a fire exit. Decals on facade all peeling so it creates a scruffy . Upstairs there was more atmosphere in the cookery school and the bathrooms are really smart.
Great service but food presentation disappointing ...omelette just presented in pool of brown water on a plain white plate, avocado and poached egg in two separate piles on slice of processed white bread, similarly smoked salmon piled up on slice of white bread.
I wouldn't take a potential client there.. might be better in the evening...
The staff were very welcoming and attentive when we arrived and were very flexible as we waited for a member of the party to arrive. The food was very well presented and flavoursome, and pretty good value. I would recommend this place for business as well as casual lunch and dinner because of the range of dishes. The menu covered good quality 'light bites' to a slap up dinner option. All round very enjoyable.
Former firehouse. Very good meal for both gluten and garlic allergy. Fresh seasonal ingredients. Socially responsible employment opportunities
Whilst the food was good there was no joined up thinking about food allergies having requested gluten and dairy free for other courses my sorbet turned up in a plate of crumbled brownie with a biscuit on the side! The restaurant wasn't busy and the service was a bit sporadic. When the bill came it has 3 miscellaneous breakfasts on it and they had no idea of how to deal with a gourmet Club card.
They have a great policy of helping the homeless, apprenticeships etc but it felt in need of a strong hand at the helm.
We will go back and give it another go as we'd like to support them. Fingers crossed!
Excellent food, attentive service. Great atmosphere for a nice lunch/dinner with friends, and very reasonably priced.
The food was tasty and the service friendly, but I found the atmosphere a little lacking. Also a little pricey - was surprised at the cost considering we only had one course.
I took my Mum here for dinner on her birthday, it was Valentine's Day, so there were limited dining options available. We were really happy with our decision to try Brigade, the service and food were both great. It's definitely worth a visit and also an excellent enterprise to support.
Great find at London Bridge. Food was exceĺlent and amazing value. A winner.
I was in a group of three, one of whom had some hearing loss, and, seeing the crowd in the bar, we asked to move to a table further away, which would have been fine. But they came back and offered us a private room, which was so kind of them. It was great food as well.
A unique restaurant that helps homeless people develop their skills in hospitality. Outstanding food and attentive service.
Great service and creative, delicious menu items like venison tartar, which you don't see often
Took a client for breakfast on their suggestion and thought the food was quite poor. Love the concept behind Brigade, but for breakfast I think the food could have been improved.
Very friendly, great food! A group of 7 of us went, including 2 children. They even let us in 10 minutes before they opened to get out of the rain, and took drinks orders!
I've been to this restaurant a couple of times over the last few years and always had a good experience, however this time was not so good. We were seated and left for 20 minutes before had to call the waiter over to take our order, even though we were sat next to the waiters station. The prices have also increased significantly since my last visit and I didnt feel that it was particularly good value for money.
The restaurant was preparing for a few quite large parties as we arrived, but staff were friendly and helpful throughout our meal, and the use of the smaller rooms for two of the parties meant we did not feel swamped as a couple. The food was lovely, particularly the chestnut and mushroom tagliatelle. A bit disappointing that though the menu said 'coffee and mince pies', it was just one mince pie and the coffee came separately. To be fair our waitress was aware of the time gap and would have dealt with it had it been a real issue. We have been before and our experience means we will certainly want to visit again.
My friend and I were very happy with the ambience, quality of the food and it's presentation was excellent. The service was very good the staff were efficient and attentitive. I had a small complaint about my food which was dealt with quickly and without any question. I will definitely be returning and have already been recommending Brigade to friends. The fact that Brigade is a social enterprise is inspiring and should be repeated in every town and city.
