Edinburgh's hidden gem! Traditional oyster bar and restaurant serving fine food and a great selection of continental lagers, beers and local ales.

** Please note all bookings are for our restaurant, we offer first come first served for drinks in our bar area.

*** Please note due to licencing restrictions under 18's are not permitted in the main bar, we can seat under 18's and over 5's in the restaurant for dining. We cannot allow under 18's in the restaurant after 10pm.

**** As we are a listed building we do not have Accessible toilets on the ground floor.

    Let me start by stating that this is one of the best restaurants that we visit anywhere in the World. This visit was somewhat disappointing. Staff were very professional. Noise level was a little loud from the adjoining bar. Now food........ Oysters we're exquisite. Lobster was tasty but oh so small. Fish stew was really good but what a small portion! Probably the size of a starter? Wine list is impressive.

    Really nice experience at Cafe Royal for early evening dinner. Great surroundings enhance by very pleasant and attentive staff. Food really nice. Noisy background from the bar but that wasnt a problem. Super place to enjoy.

    First visit for a few years. The food was very good and the service too. Our only criticism was the nature and noise level of the music. The loud beat was distracting and completely unnecessary.

    Recommended by a local friend and exceeded expectations. Other than the loud bar scene (arrived 6:45pm and it toned down in about an hour) the ambiance takes you back to 1863 with rich woods and stained glass. Great food and drink with reasonably priced and good selection of wines as well as beers. Shared a small plate of mussels and the baked camembert. Dinners were classic fish and chips and the ribeye. Sticky toffee pudding topped off the meal. Good location and friendly staff.

    Friday evening a bit loud in the restaurant at first but great food and great service. Must try the Haggis Bon Bons!
