Food too salty,both dishes we had were overseasoned. Assistance with coeliac requirements was non existent and outlined lack of staff awareness for allergies etc Inattentive,bored staff. Had to collect water jug myself after not being attended to almost 20 minutes after arrival. Definitely won't be back.

I have dined here on several occasions but unfortunately on this one the food was very disappointing. All three of us ordered the turbot and it was flavourless and the accompanying sauce was bland and tasteless and therefore didn’t enhance the flavour of the fish. Dessert was very disappointing also. Two of us had cranachan which was not exactly what we were expecting. Instead of the oats being combined with the whisky cream there was only a cursory sprinkling on the top of the cream that was very boozy. My other dining companion ordered the sticky toffee pudding with a serving of toffee sauce. The pudding itself was akin to a piece of ginger sponge and the sauce was overcooked and burnt. All in all a very disappointing experience, especially as I had been singing the Cafe Royal’s praises to my fellow diners as this was their first visit to have dinner there. The waitress was apologetic and said that she would go and find the duty manager, but came back and told us that he wasn’t available as he was on his break. Not particularly impressed as on previous visits the staff have been very attentive.

Cafe Royal was fabulous. Lovely staff and great food. I have never had a fish finger sandwich as good as this one. Will definitely be going back to the Cafe Royal.

The food was fabulous. My wife and I shred a seafood platter. The Loch Fyne oysters were terrific. A minor nudge - we had to ask for water refills and wine was self pour. Otherwise a must visit.

3 staff standing before took our order. We had almost finished food before drinks arrived from next door bar although restaurant has a large bar. Very noisy next door with loud base music ….

Cafe Royale is a must visit when in Edinburgh. I have been a couple of times and haven't been disappointed with the experience. I know I've given a couple of lower scores this time but don't take too much notice of those. The reason was simply that I was visiting with someone who has hearing aids and the combination of people talking/enjoying themselves (heaven forbid !!) and the background music, made it a slightly difficult situation for her. To be fair, we asked for the music to be slightly turned down and it was. I just don't think it added to the atmosphere at all on this occasion as all we could pick up was the base beat. All that said, the service was excellent and friendly and I can recommend the cheeseboard for dessert as it was undoubtedly the best I have ever had. Although there are very expensive wines on the menu, there are also some which are reasonably priced. I will definitely go back next time I'm in Edinburgh.
