This was our third visit to the Candlelight Inn - stopping off on the way home from Devon to catch up with friends who live locally. There is always a good welcome, the food is excellent, really nice garden. The fish and chips were really excellent, chicken Cesar salad and crab sandwich also really good.
It's worth turning off the A303 to Bishopswood - not far - to find this hidden gem.
Lovely food, great service, and a beautiful location. We stayed at the local campsite and were delighted to find this fabulous pub just a short walk away.
The food at The Candlelight is always superb. A fabulous choice of specials -the tomahawk pork to share was amazing and the white chocolate cheesecake was heavenly. All washed down with a guest cider and a couple of cheeky cocktails.
There’s something special about the candlight, interesting dishes and great hosts
Our fourth visit and, once again, we had a lovely evening. The owners are both charming and their staff are polite and helpful, the food is superb and the general ambience always very friendly. It`s now one of our favourite places to bring friends (and their dogs). I especially love the Gin menu.
Everyone seems to like this pub but this time I think we were unlucky - two practically inedible steaks. Unfortunately we persisted with them for too long before finally giving up, so we missed opportunities to say we were not happy whilst something could have been done about it. In the end £21 was knocked off the bill. It was sad because this was supposed to be a treat on a special occasion and this meal ruined it. It was even hinted that we were partly to blame for ordering it well-done. I have been moderate in my star ratings because I think things are normally fine here. It is awkward now as I live locally and am often asked if I could recommend the Candlelight - not sure what I will say now.
Lovely gastropub. Only 15 mins from Taunton town centre.
Loved our food but thought catch of the Day was very small for the price.
Overall lovely...dog friendly a lovely walk behind pub and a river...staff and owner extremely lovely...Sunday lunch lovely although the belly pork very small...thourighly enjoyed the gins ..won't be able to keep us away now..
We arrived at the time of our booking to find the bar and restaurant bereft of any staff and stood there for several minutes waiting to be seated. Eventually a member of staff appeared behind the bar with dripping wets hands and asked in a rather accusatory fashion if we had a booking. We confirmed we had and she managed to find out name and took us to a table. We were given menus and a wine list and ordered drinks which we brought by a second member of staff and we placed our food order. Some 5 minutes later a third member of staff appeared at our table notepad in hand and asked us what we wanted to order, then said oh how can you order without a menu and was most put out when we told her the order was placed. It was an hour after arriving before the mains arrived. All three members of staff came to ask if the food was OK seeming expecting a negative response. The food was OK but not special it was the service which left much to be desired. We waited again for the sweet menu and in common with an adjacent table gave up on sweet and just settled the bill. The bar was bereft of staff again as we left.
It was fathers day. We waited for our food for over half an hour and there was no apology. The initial waitress was rather blunt/defensively when I asked for some water telling me this happened naturally.
Previously we have enjoyed our meals, service an ambiance. Yet on this occasion it felt they were becoming too busy and not able to continue the good customer service....growing too quickly will not allow them to sustain their good reputation in my opinion.
Fantastic welcome, excellent food and drinks. Service was perfect too. Great village inn with really special food options.
Had a great time, very friendly staff, good food and children friendly.
The food was quite outstanding, as was the friendliness of the staff. If we had a complaint at all, it was that the service was somewhat slow, but that didn't detract at all from the lovely evening with such excellent food and wine.
We had a very nice business dinner here. You may think when the food comes out that the portions are small, however the richness and flavour of the dishes was amazing.
Must confess I thought the mussels at £9 for a starter were a bit steep as you probably only got about 10-12. On the upside they were juicy, fresh, large and tasty so I did enjoy them.
It’s also a dog friendly pub too
Lovely pub with delicious food and great drinks. We loved their own gin too!
After all the reviews I have heard, found it a little disappointing. When you are paying that sort of money for a pub meal then you would expect slightly more attentive service.
Excellent food, good service. I will be returning .
Amazing Sunday lunch as always my brother loves coming all the way from London because the food and service is so good many thanks guys 😍
We took our family and friends for a meal at the candlelight as part of my mother’s 80th birthday celebrations weekend... Great food, wonderful company and friendly service. My cousin said it was the best desert she has ever had (the Choc & Walnut brownie)... Well worth the drive out every time especially from the Taunton area...
Cool trendy place or at least it used to be. We went for dinner there was a leak with a large bucket to capture most of the water. The leak was from the ac not rain not that would make it better. If they would invest in the place this would revive the quaintness that it once was. Dinner was great although you place your order at the bar
Fantastic lunch on the bank holiday money. Shame we missed the beer feast. Food was fantastic. Perhaps more veggie and vegan options. Lovely atmosphere every time we visit.
We are even tempted to buy our nest house in the village.
A great night had by all.
Superb all round, we just love this place and are always made to feel very welcome here. Having booked for Sunday lunch with some friends on a glorious sunny day we ate in their pretty beer garden, nothing was too much trouble for the owners, who have this knack of making you feel very special. We enjoyed the annual beer festival in aid of St Margaret’s hospice and will be looking out for next years date. Thank you candlelight and see you again soon xx
Took my mum for lunch to celebrate her birthday. Beautiful pub both on the outside and interior. A very friendly welcome. We sat out in the lovely garden with our pre meal drinks, then sat inside for our meal. Very stylish decor- just the way an upmarket country inn should look. The food was heavenly and the delicious coffee was served with rich dark truffles - sublime. My only disappointment was that there were no candles on the table (it is after all the ‘Candlelight Inn’. I know it was only lunchtime, but it would have made a really cosy, warming touch. Apart from that - fabulous.
Searched for this place after reading recommendations from people at the property where we were staying. Not disappointed. Very friendly people behind the bar and the food and drink were great. We're vegetarian so the gnocchi made a lovely change from the usual veggie options on offer in some pubs. We sat in the garden on a lovely sunny day and this was well set out with tables and parasols
Excellent food beautifully presented and locally sourced.
Good all round meal set in lovely location. Only slight criticism was the salad was a little dull and the pricing is on the high side.
A warm welcome, great ambiance, great value Set menu, but we ate from the main menu. Quality and presentation of food could not be faulted. The Fowey mussels were probably some of the best I’ve ever been served all over the world. Always appreciate a smaller, balanced and well thought out menu rather than trying to deliver too much of everything! Will definitely return next time I’m in the West Country.
Great imaginative menu. Fowey mussels were fabulous. Dined there again the next night. Very memorable.
Main course spoiled by " presentation"--- if duck fat roasted potatoes are covered by meat and gravy and steamed veg they will be soggy. As a Yorkshireman I do not like to see a Yorkshire pudding perched like a crown on top the meat where it also softens.
Our lunch was amazing, pork chop and steak ale pie was cooked to perfection and the sticky toffee pudding was lush. Pity it wasn’t closer to home so we could visit it again.
Great food, great atmosphere and excellent service
Its just a lovely experience you never go without the owners making you feel special, even when they are busy. The foods consistantly excellent, cosy fires, attentive staff.
Pricey and service slow although the food was tasty when it did arrive.
Excellent service. Mike is a great host, creates a relaxed atmosphere yet very professional. Enjoyed our first meal there so much we went again the following night.
Absolutely stunning food. Fantastic presentation, quality. Steak to die for and a starter of mussels were amazing. Staff are friendly and extremely helpful. Cheese and biscuits were the best I have ever had. And if you like gin, you’ll also love their gin menu. They also make their own distilled gin ‘Beau’ so ended up taking a bottle as a souvenir. You won’t be disappointed - can not fault anything and this place really is a must!
Excellent meal and we were beautifully looked after
A good friendly welcome in a busy environment. Food was good but because of staff shortage service a little slow on this occasion. Suitable apologies expressed and a leisurely evening not spoilt.
Missed a beat by not saying anything My Wife's meal was unquestionably worse than mine , as she found her Cauliflower soup too thick but enjoyed my Duck Pate .
Her meal though was Duck not cooked properly and not rendered properly , plus a few vegetables some hard , mine well chips and Steak were not hot though Steak was very tender . I felt on the night that the staff were under pressure and maybe this reflected in the Kitchen , maybe just a bad nIght but for 67 pounds I would have expected more , I would say that if we were in the area again this would not be on our list of places to eat .
Lovely pub. Lunchtime menu good value. Staff friendly and service good
