Mike, Simon and the team run this happy, vibrant country pub.
Flint walls, wooden floors and open fires
Gravity pulled beer, local ciders and good food served daily
Locals at the bar and a warm and friendly atmosphere
A blooming garden for barbecues and sunshine
Big dining room for private functions and larger parties
Lovely gastropub, great ambiance and fantastic food! A lovely surprise.
We had a lovely meal at the Candlelight for a friends birthday, would recommend!
We had lunch here in July and were very impressed, so decided to come here for our anniversary dinner. The ambience and surroundings were lovely and we were welcomed by the staff. The food was a bit disappointing this time around. The items on the menu were imaginative but tbe preparation left a bit to be desired. The starter was overcooked and the catch of the day was more like the catch of a couple of days ago and would have benefited from some sauce. The broccoli was extremely al dente. We shared a pudding which although tasty was a little on the tepid side.
So - I'm prepared to give it another go, but this was a bit of a disappointment.
Lovely venue to meet friends for lunch. Lovely food, excellent service and super atmosphere
My husband and I were staying locally for the evening and booked at the last minute. We had no idea how amazing our meal would be. We were en route to Cornwall where we went for a few Michelin starred meals (it was our honeymoon) and this meal was my husbands favourite by far, at a fraction of the price. We are now going to be coming back as a destination in itself. The food, wine and service were all beyond wonderful. We would highly recommend and can’t wait to go back.
Food quality was good, but the starter noted on the menu had substituted ingredients. Starter arrived quickly, but a long wait for the main course, and even longer for the dessert. Service was not especially efficient and could have been more cheerful.
A delightful evening with excellent food beautifully cooked and excellent and friendly service. We sill be coming back.
Great food in lovely environment.
Good choice on the menu for every taste.
Excellent service great food, relaxing atmosphere.
Pub classics are good value, other dishes expensive and not big enough portions!
Outstanding, as always. We’re very lucky indeed to have this pub as our local.
I was disappointed that the chef couldn’t make some vegetarian gravy for me. My meal with pastry, roast potatoes and Yorkshire pud was very dry and difficult to swallow without gravy. I recommend you buy the kitchen some vegetarian gravy granules so the waiters can make it with a kettle.
My friend was disappointed that you only serve chicken leg so she had to opt for a roast without meat - she didn’t want any red meat.
Further disappointment when I asked for a dairy alternative for my cappuccino- however although I had to have milk I must say it was a very good coffee.
Hope these comments are constructive.
Front of house staff were professional and courteous.
We were recommended the Inn by the place we were staying at. We were super impressed with the pub, the welcome and especially the food. The menu was really good, well balanced and full of fresh fish, meat and other options. The courses were presented very professionally, by friendly staff, and the taste was excellent. The price charged was really fair. We came away wishing this inn was close to home as we thought it was brilliant.
Cosy friendly pub with a really helpful team. The menu has a few different takes on traditional pub food and uses the best local ingredients. Well worth a trip.
Bought my partner here for his birthday and we had a lovely time. The steak was amazing. Will definitely be back again.
Always a pleasure to visit the Candlelight. Never disappointed with the food and ambiance.
Excellent friendly pub with great quality food.
Stumbled upon this place as an impromptu pit stop on the long trawl home from Cornwall.
A rustic gem. Tasty and well priced menu. Very pleasant and relaxing couple of hours spent.
Fantastic place, can't rate it highly enough. Recommended.
Excellent as always, service and food excellent. Thank you Mike ,Simon and staff for a lovely day. Ross, NIcola , Daniel and Milly. Xx
We were recommended to this Inn by Neil at The Belfry B& B at Yarcombe.Very easy to book and fairly straight forward to find at Bishopswood.Very expensive Soda water on tap £1.50 per glass.Good tasty food but expensive for pub grub, pleasant surroundings and good service
Food was very good, service also very good. Ambience is excellent and noise level permitted easy conversation.
Lovely food and hospitality
We went with high expectations after reading other reviews.
We had booked a table for 8pm and were not seated until 8.15.
Nobody then took our order for another 40 to 45mins!
Our food finally arrived at our table at 9.45! An awful long time considering we only ordered a steak. The meat was undercooked and the food overall just served a purpose. It was nothing special. We've eaten better steak at brewers fayre or harvester. It was not worth the £47 price. There's plenty of better places out there so I would avoid the candlight inn.
Excellent meal. Very enjoyable evening.
Would recommend that you make a reservation especially at weekends rather than chancing it.
We came to you a couple of weeks ago with my dad had a nice meal I then booked up for my first wedding anniversary meal as thought it would be lovely on Tuesday both very disappointed, both our food was standard and my steak was average very chewy and not once did anyone check to see if our food was ok I thought it was a standard restaurant question and we later had to wait nearly an hour for our desert which was frustrating! On a special night for both of us we both came away very disappointed as this place was highly recommended to us such a shame and I would normally tip but not this night thx kelvin price
Nice well cooked innovative food served efficiently in nice surroundings. Only issue we were placed by a large table who were very noisy. So much so we did not have a pudding.
Lovely meal on our short break to Devon.... Staff attentive what a lovely place!
Great food, great beer, great service, fabulous atmosphere. Although not technically our local, we treat it as such. 15mins in the car is a well worth investment for a memorable evening. Always made to feel welcome and as if nothing is too much trouble, the Candlelight offers us, our family and friends everything we want in our pub.
Once again we had an excellent meal at the Candlelight Inn, a very interesting menu making it difficult to decide what to eat! Love the emphasis on locally produced food.
Whilst staying in Bishopswood we visited the Candlelight Inn on 3 occasions.
The staff were always very helpful and obliging, and dogs were very welcome.
Food was always piping hot and very good, only slight negative was that the menu was slightly limited.
Would certainly and happily eat here again.
We were on a stopover at the Candlelight Inn on our way to Cornwall and I have to say we were not disappointed. We were met by a lovely and welcoming team headed up by Mike who looked after us all afternoon through the evening. There is the opportunity to park a motor-home in their fabulous carpark running down to the stream which was fantastic for our dog. We will most definitely be passing by again and we will be stopping off for the lovely atmosphere and the food which was exceptional. I would highly recommend it to anyone. GR
Really enjoyed our first visit. Lovely meal and relaxing environment and attentive host. If I was going to be entirely picky I would say the menu lacked a little choice but that is purely personal for me, for other people it would no doubt be spot on. I have already recommended it, will do again and hope to revisit.....
On holiday and so glad we found this gem. Booked on a Sunday afternoon for late lunch. Very busy, parties and live music. Dog friendly, fab garden to rear. We were made very welcome despite how busy they were, staff and owners fantastic, food excellent, good wine choices. Sat outside after we had eaten and carried on listening to the swing singer who was great. Would definitely recommend.
This was a busy Sunday lunch and we felt that there were too few staff available to wait on all of the tables. The food was delicious but the main course of beef was not hot enough. Some of the vegetables were much too hard/uncooked and almost cold. We had to remind staff to bring the drinks we had ordered. And the bill was incorrect, but the owner quickly apologise and corrected it. All in all the experience was just a little short of what we have come to expect at The Candlelight Inn., and we hope it will be back to the normal excellent standard next time!
We were a little disappointed with the lobster main course and felt it was quite expensive for what was really a simple dish even allowing for the fact we appreciate that lobster is not a cheap dish. However when I queried the dish I was dealt with promptly given agood explanation and the price of one lobster was taken off our bill. It was fairly noisy but it was Saturday evening. Overall we would certainly recommend the Candlelight and will return again.
Tucked away gastropub. Service was excellent. Food delicious 😋
Just first rate. Wonderfully warm service, nice country pub feel, first rate cooking. The “special” fish dishes are superb, certainly a must-visit when we are back in the area.
We came for Sunday lunch, the roast sharer platter was really yummy and it was plenty of food for two of us. We came with our 10month old staff were very accommodating and friendly to us all. Would deffinately recommend.
Every meal we have here is perfect. Food , service and atmosphere faultless. Recommend the crab starter - it’s to die for
