Disappointing. Food was beautifully presented and we were expecting it to taste better. We started off with the cod bites and stilton parfait, the parfait was nice but the cod bites were very chewy and cold. Main courses were pretty solid, I had the venison which was served a little rare for my liking but otherwise had good flavour, my wife had the polenta which was exceptional. Not sure how they cooked their cabbage but we both agreed it was some of the best we had tasted. Dessert was unfortunately another let down though, my wife had the poached pear which itself was nice but was overly covered in a very bitter chocolate sauce which completely hid the flavour of the pear, I had the treacle tart which honestly tasted more like pumpkin pie since it was very bland with no taste of treacle whatsoever, the marmalade it was served with was nice however. Service was rather slow, we were waiting around 20m after we had finished our meal for the bill and in the end I went up to the bar to get it myself. The house red wine was excellent and if the starters and desserts had been on par with the main courses we would have been a lot happier with the experience. Was not too impressed to find a dog in the restaurant area either, in the bar is fine but they shouldn’t be allowed where food is served. Overall the price of the food just didn’t match the quality.
Lovely lunch. Starter of cod cheeks excellent. Venison sausages superb. Service friendly and efficient. Looking forward to our next visit in December.
Lovely local gastro pub which we visited 3 times in one week. Once as a couple and twice with friends. A lovely ambience with lit candles and a small but varied menu with local ingredients.
My second visit. Not disappointed. Delightful all round.
Fabulous pub and food. Busy Saturday night bit slow taking our food order after our drink order.
Loved our meal and will recommend and we will go back and try a Sunday roast.
We live locally and visit fairly often. The Candlelight is always excellent but on this occasion it surpassed itself. The new menu came out only a few days ago and it is a treat. Highly recommended.
on all fronts, ie friendly staff, great tasting food, that is also well presented.
Lovely food. Mains were fab. One starter was a little small, literally two mouthfuls; albeit great flavours. Good service. Great decor. Will go again
Lovely meal, just the ticket. Food excellent and service great too
Excellent as always - have been on a number of occasions and have always been delighted with our meal- service and ambiance.
Lovely Sunday lunch. Good atmosphere and generally a very enjoyable time
An excellent find!
Food was very good quality and excellent value. Wine was a bit pricey though, although it was a very good NZ Pinot Noir! Thanks for a great night.
Lovely birthday meal and excellent service and warm welcome - would definitely return and recommend
This is a pub with a difference, even in a market where the pub dining standard has been set very high.
We have eaten at some very good gastro pubs across the UK and the Candlelight Inn can definitely take its place amongst this select group. The dining area is simple and unfussy with a nice ambience. The staff are cheerful, polite and seem like the enjoy working there. The food is superb, too; fresh and tasty regional ingredients prepared and presented creatively. We loved our meal at the Candlelight and would highly recommend it. Try their very own Beau gin too!
The food was some of the best I have eaten. The tastes and the aunthenticity ( listed produce and suppliers ) were fantastic.
Lovely lunch as always but extra special on this particular visit!
Excellent all round. Great pub with great atmosphere and superb beers and food.
Brilliant food, great wine and great service what more could you want!
Attentive, cheerful ,very helpful and positive staff. Menu choices a little limited but meals well presented and tasty . Only disappointment was having to wait some ten minutes for dessert and having to ask the waitress if it was coming. Overall the food is very good and definitely a place to go if you are in the area .
There were 4 of us and 2 had the braised lamb shoulder which was dry. I had a fish special which was delicious and the 4th person had stuffed chicken which looked dry. Maybe they had an “off” night. We would try again.
We have eaten at the Candlelight several times now and have never been disappointed.
Sunday roast beef, cooked to perfection with a good choice of veg, well done chef!
Lovely ambience. Attentive service. Best restaurant food where dogs are welcome too.
Booking online was simple but no (promised) confirmation due to pub's computer glitch, but friendly response on phone when booking checked. Friendly and effective service too, and excellent food and drinks. We weren't hurried at all in a relaxed and comfortable ambience. An enjoyable lunching experience we may well wish to repeat. Thank you for caterng for and hosting us so well!
A fabulous place to eat. Very friendly welcome, food of very high quality and choice. Would strongly recommend this for special occasions
First visit after being recommended- won’t be our last! On the favourites list!
Highly recommend - lovely food, friendly staff and relaxed atmosphere
Great food. Would definitely come back
Was staying locally for work and arrived early but was seated fairly promptly and from then on, had great service, great food and lovely wine.
An enjoyable meal with my wife to celebrate her birthday. Food was excellent and the service friendly and efficient.
Excellent all round! Will be back again with more friends!
Very pretty pub with lots of character. We sat outside for a drink, lovely in the sun then went inside for lunch. Very nicely laid out, friendly and helpful staff.
Lovely food, good atmosphere. We came on a Tuesday night and was fairly busy. Food was lovely and good value for money.
Lovely warm welcome, lovely food, great atmosphere. One tiny fault was the wait between the main meal and dessert, we actually had to ask to see the dessert menu and watched everyone around get asked.
This was our third visit to the Candlelight Inn - stopping off on the way home from Devon to catch up with friends who live locally. There is always a good welcome, the food is excellent, really nice garden. The fish and chips were really excellent, chicken Cesar salad and crab sandwich also really good.
It's worth turning off the A303 to Bishopswood - not far - to find this hidden gem.
Lovely food, great service, and a beautiful location. We stayed at the local campsite and were delighted to find this fabulous pub just a short walk away.
The food at The Candlelight is always superb. A fabulous choice of specials -the tomahawk pork to share was amazing and the white chocolate cheesecake was heavenly. All washed down with a guest cider and a couple of cheeky cocktails.
There’s something special about the candlight, interesting dishes and great hosts
Our fourth visit and, once again, we had a lovely evening. The owners are both charming and their staff are polite and helpful, the food is superb and the general ambience always very friendly. It`s now one of our favourite places to bring friends (and their dogs). I especially love the Gin menu.
Everyone seems to like this pub but this time I think we were unlucky - two practically inedible steaks. Unfortunately we persisted with them for too long before finally giving up, so we missed opportunities to say we were not happy whilst something could have been done about it. In the end £21 was knocked off the bill. It was sad because this was supposed to be a treat on a special occasion and this meal ruined it. It was even hinted that we were partly to blame for ordering it well-done. I have been moderate in my star ratings because I think things are normally fine here. It is awkward now as I live locally and am often asked if I could recommend the Candlelight - not sure what I will say now.
Lovely gastropub. Only 15 mins from Taunton town centre.
