Chequers on the Green Country Pub
Country dining in a beautiful old 14th Century Kentish inn situated on the village green. We offer local ales and wines from the best of Kents breweries and vineyards to accompany our varied menu . Each week our Chefs produce a Specials Menu using locally sourced seasonal meat, fish and farm produce together with our regular full menu. We are able to cater for special dietary requirements , just inform your server when you visit us of your needs and we will try to accommodate you.
We have a separate dining room area ideal for private gatherings from dinner parties to business and club meetings.
Our outdoor facilities offer a spacious, sunny terrace also equipped with large sunshades fitted with heaters for the colder weather.
In particular , landlords, Andrew and Diane are proud to offer a friendly and professional service from our long-standing team where nothing is too much trouble.
Lovely meal with family. Well planned out building with one way system and hand sanitiser/hand washing facilities available outside and in the restaurant. Food really good although was too late for the carvery but plenty of choice on the menu.
Went with 1 year old grand daughter - high chair provided very clean and several food options available.
Staff very friendly and on hand to serve at the table. Would go again.
Great fresh food as normal. Great venue and lovely staff.
Excellent food - interesting and delicious 'specials'' menu plus good pub staples. Friendly and efficient staff. Very easy to follow social distancing measures and an all round very pleasant experience. It was our second visit and we will certainly be going again.
Excellent food and service. All staff were attentive and could answer the questions that we had.
Had a table outside and traffic noise could be loud at times.
Friendly efficient staff, good service and interesting varied menu to suit all tastes. Pizza Hay Barn a great addition. Never disappointed! Thank you.
We sat outside on a warm weekday evening and found it very pleasant, The staff were very friendly and food was great, will go back
The Chequers attracts a good-sized crowd these days, but it is a tad difficult to see why. Service is friendly and straightforward enough, the food is decently prepared with no frills and sensibly priced, but one cannot escape the feeling that this is a village pub not enjoying being a restaurant. Most eat outside on the roadside terrace (where a pizza service predominates), the inside being essentially gloomy, particularly while access to the bar is limited. Nothing particularly wrong with the experience, yet overall slightly underwhelming. PerM
Fantastic food in good portions accompanied by attentive staff.
Bill was reasonable too but for good food, happy to pay that. Will use again.
Brilliant food, really quick service and lovely staff. Would definitely eat here again :)
Delicious food, great staff, lovely pub
We are definitely going back a lot!
Wonderful little pub/restaurant in High Halden, would highly recommend
Great place, food superb, waiting staff attentive and efficient!
Definitely be back
My lobster fantastic and husbands fillet steak looked lovely and he said it was the red wine stilton sauce he had with it well, omg yummy!
Delicious food, great atmosphere, and extremely attentive service. Visited for the first time this evening, and will definitely be back. Really varied menu (which is hard to come by in current circumstances) and everything we had was perfect. We also had such a lovely staff member serving us, honestly could not fault a thing!
This was our first time to the Chequers and I would go back. The menu offers many options and I was struggling to choose! For us the food was a little hit and miss - the quality was mostly good but the garlic bread was apparently bland. I had opted for a vegetarian curry which was no longer available, and was replaced by a curry pie. The pie was delicious, but sadly it was potato based (Aloo Gobi) and got served with chips!! Vegetables or salad would have been better. The staff were absolutely fantastic - from the moment we arrived till we left. Not sure how effective the social-distancing was inside as the dining areas are small rooms with low ceilings. But then again it is a gorgeous charming country pub, and you wouldn’t change that! I would definitely go again.
Very good service, food was hot, beer, was, cold, didn't have to wait long to be served
Good food.. excellent service! A bit noisy on the night due to a birthday party on the table next to us! A bit pricey for what it is... but on the whole, an enjoyable experience!
We had a lovely meal on Tuesday . Waitresses were friendly and attentive. Food arrived quickly and was really good. We will be back
Lovely food, great service, great ambience, many thanks to Diane and the team.
The staff went out of their way to make sure I was comfortable with a sleeping toddler on my lap, they staggered my food so that I could swap over with my husband after he had finished eating. The food was excellent not a bad bite at all, the staff made my daughter feel like a princess and the pub was spotlessly clean. What more can you ask for!
This was our first visit and we were very impressed by the friendliness and the level of service and good food.
Always very well received, even when they have had a busy Sunday already. Tried the new Hush Heath rose wine - very nice! Thanks Dianne.
Think COVID has impacted the pub, which is a shame. - Given COVID they need to ensure the food is spot on, which is was not... very poor in fact.
Best food I have eaten out in a while, the steak made my top 3 and the sticky toffee pudding was the best I have had. Everyone really enjoyed their meals as well. Will def be back.
Staff were friendly and welcoming, excellent customer service and variety on the menu exceptional, well done all !
Well organised one way system all well explained by staff , fantastic service for a party of 7 all food arrived at the same time , staff very helpful and attentive would definitely recommend
Another lovely meal, great staff. Really lucky to have this pub as our local !!
After seeing some bad reviews on here about service we was pleasantly surprised.
We had a three course meal and was booked for 7.30 all meals were served within 10/15 minites of ordering ...
Plates were cleared quickly etc service was outstanding thank you (Leah)
The squid and duck starters were amazing! Well worth a try.
170g burgers good value for money and delicious.
I was alittle disappointed by the brownie desert a little dry..
However on an overall amazing. Do not hesitate to try this hidden gem.
Social distancing for us was brilliant we was completely separate from Everyone within our own room almost.
Great food great service. Will definitely visit again
Service was very efficient, friendly and up beat. The waitress was really friendly and an absolute delight- very informative and humorous. Food was excellent and quick to be served. I thought the COVID measures were sensible, balanced and I felt safe.
Our order was taken at approx 7.30pm but no starters were received until 8.45pm and that was only because we chased the order 10mins before.
Brie with salad garnish Brie was lovely but ‘a lettuce leaf?’ cranberry chutney, barely a teaspoon
King prawns with crusty bread – the prawns were squishy and partly frozen, the crusty bread was toasted but almost burnt on one side and dry and white on the other?
The fillet steak ‘medium rare’ was over cooked on one side and seared on the other and it wasn’t freshly cooked, salad garnish ? A lettuce leaf??
The mushroom pie a replacement for Feta pie was over cooked, the pastry was hard and there was possible one small mushroom sliced inside, again a lettuce leaf???
The satay curry was supposed to have been replaced with aloo gobi. The replacement looked and tasted like a mashed pie and was served with chips not rice and a lettuce leaf??
The chips were nice and the two desserts ordered were too, however I do feel the portions served did not reflect the price.
The service was very disappointing and the apology given for our late order “sorry your order fell on the floor, it will be ready in 10mins” was inadequate, at the very least we should have been offered a drink on the house?
Salad garnish – at the very least I would expect lettuce, several leaves, cucumber and tomatoes not just a lettuce leaf???
Several people, sitting at the centre table smoked with no regard to any other people in the restaurant. I appreciate we chose to sit outside but we didn’t find it pleasant as none of us smoke and it’s not nice for your staff either?
In my opinion the meal including drinks was only worth £30.00. I was incredibly disappointed as it took me a lot of effort to persuade my mum to come and eat out with us and I don’t earn very much. It was supposed to be special
On a plus, the social distancing measures and cleanliness etc were good.
We had a lovely meal, service was good and so was our lunch. Doing their best to follow government guidelines, it is ignorant customers that make this a challenge, surely by now people will realise everywhere will have one way systems, hand sanitizers etc, this is not places being OTT they are doing as the government says.
Arrived at 13.15 as per my booking, noticed that the pub was busy so asked how long the wait for food would be, the waiter told me 15 to 30mins. We were on a tight timescale but 30mins would have been fine.
Was seated and order a drink and was given food menus. At 13.50 our food order had not been taken so we asked to pay for our drinks and we left - my soft drink did not have 50% off as per eat out to help out.
Understandably it was busy during eat out to help but more staff should have been working or accurate wait times given.
This was the first time visiting in years, we visited all the time with the previous owners and thought with 50% off that it would be good to test it out again.
We won’t be trying again.
Great night it’s always a pleasure going to this pub 😀
And for those who haven’t tried the pizzas then your missing out
Very surprised and disappointed that there was no track and trace, is this a conscious decision or an oversight ?. In the current climate we won't be returning unless this is rectified
Badly let down by the dessert!! Etonmess was made with ice cream and not cream!! If I had been told at the time they had ran out of cream I would of chose something else...it was just a bowl of slop!! Not worth £6.25 by any stretch of the imagination!! When I commented about having ice cream and not cream the guy said sorry I forgot to say we had no cream!!! To my way of thinking if you've only got part of a dish just take it off the menu it saves alot of complaints!! Saying this though I would still probably give it the benefit of a doubt and make a return visit at some point.
The staff done an amazing job with the one distancing. Outside was pretty busy at times but overall great. Food was top as well.
Horrifying. Neither I nor my family have ever felt so racially discriminated in our lives. Being the only non-white family there, as soon as we arrived we were greeted with questioning looks and glares. We were not welcomed very amicably & from first impressions alone felt slightly uncomfortable. Upon arrival we were told we were to be seated indoors, after then requesting whether we could be sat outside we were told our booking was made for inside. Regardless of the fact there were only 2-3 tables (of the many outside) occupied, without question, we followed the lady in. As being seated we were told our waitress will be with us shortly so we can order drinks. Upon our first waitress’s arrival to take our drinks orders we were not aware of what the pub offered so requested a drinks menu, we were then told they do not have any. Again, this was understandable so we went onto ordering our drinks. As we ordered, because we were unaware of what drinks they sold, we asked the waitress which drinks were available ‘Pepsi Max or Diet Coke...’ she was visibly uncomfortable with taking our order & was rather cold to us. She told us she will be back shortly with our drinks& menus. The drinks came reasonably promptly and were brought by our second waitress. We were not met with our menus so asked for them again (in case they had just forgotten to bring them). After being told they will be brought straight over we waited for 15-20 minutes. Within this time only one man was seated outdoors and two families were seated either side of our table. Upon both of these families’ arrivals they were warmly welcomed and given menus immediately. The whole ambience and energy of the staff greeting these other families had been shifted. After seeing the evident difference in treatment between the other customers and us, we decided it was best to leave. We had been made to feel unwelcome and unwanted.
I hope future ‘ethnic’ families that are to visit this pub do not get made to feel this way.
Food was lovely and lots of.
Service was poor waited ages for drinks and not very attentive.
Excellent service staff were outstanding they had time to chat and put us at our ease.
Service a little bit slow but improved.Food very nice.Music a bit loud but I think we was near speaker.Overall very nice evening
