Covid setup leaves a lot to be desired. Sidewalk traffic is in your dinner party. Plates are not much at all. Maybe the cheese board is better. This is a wine bar on a sidewalk, that's it.
Menu is always changing with fresh local fare. Cheese and meat plate was delicious. Arugula salad is big and fresh. Scallops were small but tasty. The chicken paillard was really tasty. Always love this place for a delicious meal and great service. Bravo!
Great service and tasty food!
Thanks Jamie! Hope to see you soon.
I arrived with a good host who was very personable. He was funny and attentive. The wine was good. The only drawback was the main entree veggie burger. I don't like beans so I was surprised this restaurant made a veggie burger with beans. I would have thought it would make it more upscale like with different veggies. The only thing on the menu I could have was that since I am a vegan. I already had a sandwich at another place so I was displeased to have to order another sandwich. Need to have a variety of proteins for vegans like tofu or beyond burger meatballs. Make your veggie meatballs without egg and cheese would be ideal. The burger didn't really taste that good and the fries were not really a diet staple Id order so it was not a really good meal for me over all. I did like like the argula salad.
Thank you for the feedback and we're glad our staff took care of you and that you enjoyed our organic wines! Regarding the vegan options - we do have several vegan options on the menu (in fact nearly half our menu is vegan) but will nonetheless share your feedback with Chef. For future reference - we are always happy to turn one of our smaller vegan dishes into a larger 'entrée-style' portion at your request. We hope to see you soon to try some of these dishes!
Great tasting items. Dish amounts are pretty much tapas sized Price reflects the quality of the food, so don't expect bargain prices, but it shouldn't break the bank. Hearty dinner for two (5 items) with a glass of wine came out to $140 pre-tip.
Winners were the zucchini fritters, chickpea salad (mixed with olives), veggie meatballs, and the seared scallops (almost like a bruschetta presentation, worked really well). The steak salad was great as well, salad dressing was actually the winner (what I'm assuming was the chimichurri sauce bc the steak itself didn't have a strong flavor).
Thank you for the kind words. Glad you enjoyed and hope to see you again!
Had to sit on the street due to Covid...... So, circumstances....Im sure when all returns to normal will be outstanding. Good to support a small restaurant in these times.
Hopefully we will be allowed indoors soon :) Thank you for your support!
Weird dining experience, loved the wine but the food was sub-par.
We ordered truffle fries and when they came out they were plain fries. We asked them if there was even truffle on them and the server said yeah there is, even though it did not taste like it. We also told him there was supposed to be parmesan on the fries as it said in the description and he told us we had to pay more for that.
Also the crispy chickpeas were not at all crispy.
Hey Jenny - thanks for the kind words about the wine and service! I'm sorry however that you didn't enjoy a couple of our Happy Hour food offerings. The happy hour truffle fries should indeed come with parmesan and lots of truffle. Sorry for the mix up and we hope to make it right next time you come in. - Chez Tex
The staff is amazing! Five stars for all
They need to change flooring. They have a very low barrier to separate two sides. Since all the floor and barrier are of same color concrete this barrier cannot be distinguishing and is a major safety hazard. I tripped over this barrier and fell on concrete. Suffered cuts and bruises.
We made it just in time for the happy hour. Highly recommend the grilled cheese! We stayed for a while and ordered a few things from the dinner menu: veggie meatballs, roasted carrots, sausage and sauerkraut. Portions are small so don’t expect hefty entrees. Good for sharing small plate style. Great wine list. Only downside is there is limited patio seating facing Main Street which is a busy street so expect some noise from traffic/passersby. But they are making it work despite the pandemic. I’d love to go back once indoor dining is open.
Elias was amazing! Happy hour that goes until 6:30 sign me up! Wish there was a bigger selection of treats to snack on! Overall great date spot or friends hang! Venice needs to hop on this trend!
I chose Chez Tex because it was open late during the Pandemic, they practiced social distancing, and the menu looked interesting. The charred corn and coconut chili did not disappoint. There were good craft beers and wines by the glass too. We sat outdoors and the heat lamp was broken, making for a chilly evening. Also, there was a psychotic, homeless man sitting a few feet away on the sidewalk who was screaming obscenities and throwing things for our first hour. The staff said that he usually got tired and calmed down around 9:30 pm. Thankfully, he did.
Awesome and amazing food
They do the best they can with the outdoor dining experience. Really bent over backwards to make it ok, even with all of the traffic noise. Food- EXCELLENT!!!! Will be back!
Fantastic selection of fun, interesting natural wines and the tiny kitchen cranks out some very tasty small plates - what a gem!
Amazing, fresh food and friendly service! We will be back very soon and make this a staple in our restaurant rotation.
We were excited to get out of the house and to be able to find Chez Tex. We went for lunch. Their menu is limited primarily to light food, although there were 2 daily specials of more substantial size (we did not try either). Husband/wife team with him in the kitchen and her front of the house. She has worked in the wine industry for +10 years and was very knowledgeable. Only 1 other table seated while we were there but very enjoyable and we would go back. Had sardines, crudite and charcuterie plate and all were delicious, with a bottle of Pinot Gris rose.
Food and service were excellent! Could not speak highly enough about this little gem on Main in SM.
Great food, kind staff, calming interior.
Truffle gnocchi was fantastic. Kale was great. Cauliflower was excellent. Wine was reasonable. Service was on point. It was not crowded at all, very quiet.
This place has been open for a good while and for some odd reason seems to remain half empty. This is unfair. The food is well-prepared and very reasonably priced (for the neighborhood). The menu is short and vegetarian friendly. Everything we had was more than decent, and went well with the well-thought drinks menu. We ended with a pear and pistachio crostata that was actually better than Gjusta's! Will return.
Nice spot for couples that want to communicate
Nice service staff
Limited menu
Pleasant dining experience
This ia neighborhood gem. Just a few dishes -- all delicious -- and a very interested and reasonable wine list, although we brought our own ($25 corkage). We dined early and only a few tables were occupied, yet service is of the philosophy of not to bother you (so we did flag our server down a few times). But we loved the kale salad and the amazing cauliflower. Definitely a must visit for a Venice scene that is either too trendy or too tavern-y.
Great food - great space - great service- highly recommend
This is a hidden gem. Delicious food, quiet enough to have a real conversation, with a well-curated wine list. I'm surprised this lovely little spot isn't packed.
Hands down my favorite restaurant experience to date. Maybe it was just one of those nights where everything all aligned perfectly: the service + food + ambiance... did I mention service, were all top notch. We were definitely pleasantly surprise. I can't wait to become a regular!
Small restaurant, small menu, beer and wine only.
First time there and it was a pleasant surprise. We shared everything, the gnocchi which was tasty and a bit crunchy. Then we also had the open faced tomato toast, like a bruschetta which was also delicious. Service was great!
Really great food and service! Definitely recommend checking this place out.
Lovely local restaurant serving inventive and delicious Californian fare. Party of six, we ordered a comprehensive array of appetizers, entrees and desserts and shared them all. There wasn’t a weak link in the chain. The restaurant was quiet but that suited us fine. Highly recommend Chez Tex.
The effort was there, but the food was subpar. The menu was very limited. The waiter recommended the ricotta gnocchi and cauliflower. The flavors were poor, especially given the ingredients. Bland, boring. We were still hungry so we ordered the kale; same result. It was very disappointing. The service was good, the waiter was nice. The place was practically empty, it was a saturday night.
The food was absolutely fantastic, fresh, and beautifully plated. I would highly recommend Chez Tex for a date night or dinner with family and friends.
We had a healthy, tasty and delicious meal. We had 2 vegetarian meals - Cauliflower grilled and charred and a curried chick pea dish over rice. We also had the grilled Branzino whole which as fileted. Everything was fresh and we enjoyed the Brick walls and concrete floor décor.
Amazing food , reasonably priced in a cool quaint spot.
We found this restaurant a bit average. Food was fine, but not seasoned particularly well and the beef didn’t appear to be the best quality for the cut.
Excellent food. Will go again.
Host was very rude. They kept adjusting the lighting so it would get very bright then dark and it was very distracting. Will not be back.
Great place to dine in Venice if you actually want to have a conversation! Nice and quiet ambiance and food carries a mix of meditaranian with an exotic twist, lots of vegetarian choices too. Would definitely come back!
We ordered almost everything on the menu between us all and not one did! All were delish and well paired. New favorite local spot!
Went there at 7 on a Saturday and they were out of the entree we wanted, beer we ordered, and hadn’t yet made the appetizer we wanted. Apparently they ran out of the entree the night before- why they didn’t buy more, who knows! We said we would wait for the app and waitress couldn’t give a time when it would be ready and said we it could be a lot longer than 30 minutes and that she couldn’t give a time frame. Later we saw the table next to us with it- our waitress never said anything about it being ready. Overall was a disappointing, overpriced experience.
