We had a great brunch - the bloody mary's were top notch - definitely add the bacon that was delicious. The bacon/egg sandwich and chilaquiles were fantastic. We will definitely go back.
Long wait for our drinks but once they came we were delighted with the food and service
Great food. Limited to outdoor dining.
My salad was excellent
Staff were really nice. Space heaters really helped. Food was yummy and well portioned.
Awesome food and friendly staff. It was nice to be able to go to a restaurant even if it's outdoor dining on a fairly busy street. Will definitely be back!
Very little attention by waitstaff. All ordering, payment and tipping done by phone at the beginning of the meal was annoying and clumsy. Not sure why waitstaff cannot take the order and actually make it a better dining experience. As it is it feels like the customer does all the work and still tips 20%. $12 bloody Mary’s and then they charge $2 extra for olives? By the time it’s all added up tax and tip it was $18 without the $2 olive. That’s just offensive. I used to really like this restaurant, but the food was just mediocre and the prices were high, and the add on prices for everything were way overblown.
Very attentive service, high quality and flavorful food and drinks at reasonable prices. The menu, ordering, and payment can be completed on your smartphone after scanning a QR code unique to your table OR the staff can ring you up at their terminal.
I totally understand that dining out these days is not what it used to be. We were instructed to order via the app which we did. Right off the bat 20% was added as tip to our order but service was not up to par. We had to ask for coffee refills, more than once. Not once did our server ask us how we were doing. We also had to ask for an itemized receipt as we couldn't remember if we had ordered dessert or not. After waiting about 10 minutes, we decided to ask for our dessert to go. When our server finally got around to telling us that our dessert was missing, we informed him that we had already asked for it to be wrapped to go, at which point we decided to ask for a refund on the dessert.
Again, while I understand that this is the new norm, if you charge me for a tip ahead of time, then I expect you will at least provide customer service. I was really looking forward to eating at Chop Bar as I have been a customer in the past. Not so sure I will come back.
everything was great, the only thing was with the new way of ordering me and my friend ordered at the same time yet I did not receive my meal for almost 25 minutes after she did. by the time I received my meal hers was cold.. would great if ordering from same table if food arrived at same time or closer together.
The contactless ordering is great, but it meant that our food came out at weird times. I got my salad and entree at the same time
Far before the other two people in my party. It was really cold and windy, and there were no outdoor heaters so as I waited and just ate my salad until my friends got their food my entree got very cold before I could eat it.
This was outdoor pandemic dining, so ambience and noise don’t really reflect anything permanent
Love the food and service and location soooooo much. Would love to see better wines, especially natural wines. I understand that bringing good wine at the price point you want to maintain for the customer is aa complicated affair. But there are great, not-too-weird natural wines available for a workable price. Cheers!
This is a great place.
Meh COVID corners cut. Noticeable, not worth it.
Chop Bar couldn’t seem to get our orders out or tell us why. My hot dish arrived immediately. My friend’s salad came almost 30 minutes later. Despite having told servers three times, the latte and juice didn’t turn up until after the salad. The food was fine, but not great. And the hot dish was poorly conceived—scrambled eggs over tortilla chips, covered in salsa—an unpleasant takeoff on poutine?
Restaurant did not have my OpenTable reservation though I had confirmation on my app and in an email. Hostess said reluctantly that they were busy and rather full but she would see what she can do. We waited over 20 minutes and were placed at a table that was too cold and we were already frozen waiting. We wound up making reservations through OpenTable for somewhere else. Very disappointed.
Food was pretty good but menu was limited. We were seated at 5:20 for our 5:30 reservation but their computer menu system inflexibly wouldn't allow us to order dinner until 5:30, so we had to sit and wait. The outdoor seating is on the sidewalk in front of the restaurant, very public and very exposed to the elements. The only tables for 6 were picnic tables, not horrible, but not ideal. Worst thing, they only had 3 heaters for about 12 outdoor tables, so we (and most others) were very cold. The cell phone menu and ordering system was not user friendly, hard to figure out and a nuisance if you needed to order more than one course. The food did come out pretty quickly after it was ordered. There were decent beer and wine and specialty cocktail options, but we couldn't figure out how to order a "regular" cocktail.
The food was delicious and our server was kind. However, it was Valentine's day and it was pouring. I was really surprised that no one called the reservations to tell us that only three of their tables were covered. When we arrived, the host actually asked "Do you just want to cancel?" We had driven in crappy traffic for 35 min and since the rain had lessened, we decided to stay. Another woman had called and she was told that the majority of tables were covered.
Why would a business do this to their patrons and their staff? I know times are hard and so I have much empathy but had they called, I most definitely would have returned and quite possibly have ordered it all to go. Now I don't think we will go again and most definitely going out on Valentine's Day again. Businesses get so greedy on this silly holiday.
Menu wasn't up to date on the QR code and is overall quite limited. It was difficult to get service. How to order and how to pay wasn't made clear from the beginning either which caused some drama. Also no heat lamps as we sat outside.
Very friendly staff. Dog friendly. Quickly fixed a sandwich that had an ingredient I had asked to be held out of the original order.
It’s a long time favorite. Happy to see they survived! The outdoor seating is decent. Wouldn’t suggest picking any of the corner seats next to the street it’s gets a little loud. Also if it’s a colder night they use heat lamps that need outlets so pick a table closer to the building! We will definitely make sure to be mindful of that next time. Cant say enough about the mussels and Hot Toddy!
the menu offered wasn't as ambitious as what we found online. I realize it's a pandemic. But the 2 or 3 things that made us want to go there were not offered. The poutine was a little too rich. We liked everything, but it was expensive. $115 for four after tips (2 of them being kids)
The food is fine (I made the wrong choice on the menu--I was craving huevos rancheros, but in my hunger forgot that this may not be that place for that), the service is excellent. I didn't pay so can't comment on "value," but the value of being able to sit outside, not feeling anxious, and have someone bring food to me cannot be overstated RN.
My favourite place to go! Coming from another country, we have been looking for a local/close by place that is our regular / go-to place. Finally found it in Chop Bar. Friendly, unpretentious service, tasty tasty food. Love it!
Great outdoor dining setup, tasty food and drinks, safely spaced tables and contact-free setup.
The Chop Bar was great. Fantastic service and the food and atmosphere (sidewalk dining) was all good too.
Loooove this place and the cocktails and dishes are amazing
Order/Pay with your phone; everyone in masks! I missed this place ❤️.
I appreciated that Chop Bar used QR code’s for ordering and that the servers were still warm and accessible.
Love going here, such tasty food. Might be my new fav place in Oakland
the outdoor dining area had zero ambience. the waitstaff didn't greet really tell us how to order through the QR code and there was basically NO customer service. the meatloaf dish looked like cafeteria food. I should've just stayed home as usual and ordered in.
First night of outdoor dining returned!
We have been going to Chop Bar for years. We adore it,as does anyone we bring to it. We always recommend it. Keep patronizing them. Pick-up and delivery are fantastic.
My burger was just so so. No heaters where we were seated outside so it was cold to be dining outside. Will try once more, but disappointing the first time.
First time here since Covid and felt very safe with the precautions! Tables were spaced out and you can order everything from your phone. I had the Trout special and it was fantastic!
Food, was the inedible. I got the vegan pasta dish which consisted of undercooked pasta in marinara sauce with shredded raw brussel sprouts through it. It arrived cold with a slice of bread on the plate with it. It was the most disgusting thing i've ever gotten anywhere. I even tried to eat it because i was so hungry but it was inedible. I couldn't believe the price they charged for something a ten year old could do a better job of. My partner got the burger which she said was good but the fries were cold and greasy. Hostess never got us water. I didn't get cutlery until i went up and asked the host for it. Will be warning people away from this place.
Chop Bar has a new order entry system which they were still trying to figure out.
While the two guys working the dining room, Sam and Johnny were extremely nice, all the doors were open, so restaurant was really cold.
I’m sure the limited menu will improve and the dining room will warm up once the COVID restrictions go away.
Chop bar never disappoints! The food continues to evolve and explore different flavors. Chef Lev is always trying new things and the staff and the ambiance is always welcoming and easy. Ordering by QR code is easy, and safety protocols were in place so we felt safe with our whole experience. Support your local eateries!!!!
So good! I like ordering and paying via phone (once I figured it out). I LOVED my entre, a pork, duck and ale pie, with a nice crust on top, served over delicately seasoned mashed potatoes--excellent!
We were really looking forward to going out and enjoying a rare dining experience. We got put in front of a bright window watching workers cutting raw meat and brining it. They could easily have put drapes up so diners couldn’t see it. Also we were basically sitting underneath a fan from the parking garage. There should not have been a table there. When we asked to move the waitress was very stressed and rude. We tried to explain why and it only made it worse. Moving on, we ordered and the food was overcooked, the waitress never checked on us and it was $70 for 2 people. It was nice to get out but I’d never go back here.
