Clay's - Hyderabadi Kitchen
Our whole menu is based on Hyderabadi cuisine, a southern region in India.
We are a small dining place so currently we cannot take in any under 5 children. Our sincere appologies for that.
Excellent food, friendly service and good wine. Another great meal.
Another amazing meal at Clay's. Quail Pakora and JD chicken were wonderful but the real find was the Bhindi Fry. Great stuff!.
Excellent food, everyone enjoyed
Excellent venue, good atmosphere, good service. All in all I’ll go back, I’d like to try the food once more. Unfortunately the starter we ordered was too salty not just the batter in which the cabbage was fried, but the sauce it came with too. My friends starter, the strips of meet when it arrived did not look very appetising, but in tasting it the spices used brought it to life, less of it and better presented will make a huge difference. The mains were medium spicy as promised, the rice well cooked, the aubergine dish sauce peanuty and filling, the monk fish sauce well balance but the fish slightly over cooked. The biryani aromas delicious, even though the dish looked slightly dry, but it came accompanied by the right sauces to balance it. Having said all that, it is a refreshing place to eat at, we will go again, this time we will try other dishes as the selection is varied and appetising.
Nice family run business, food was lovely and full of flavour. I would come again only down side is the portion sizes could be bigger for the amount charged for each dish.
It was one of my favourite dining experience. The food is different from the normal Indian cuisine you can find in every town. It has authentic flavours and taste really good. Service is great and fast. The only thing that gives it a low score is the portion, it is definitely small for the price charged. The flat bread we ordered is much more smaller than many Indian restaurants we have frequented. The meat and chicken dishes has smaller cuts as compared to its counterparts.
Amazing food, great service, tasty beer, fantastic restaurant. My only gripe was that I could hear the music playing both upstairs and down.
There always some caution for a second visit after the first visit was so good. The food seemed even better this time. Some new and welcome additions to the menu went down well. The service was great and even remembered me after 4 months. Won't leave it so long next time.
Phenomenal food as always, great service, and easily my favourite restaurant in Reading!
Wonderful meal, food was delicious. Service was very good. Best Puri outside of India itself.
Good choice inc gf , reasonably priced and friendly service.
An absolute gem - delicious food - all beautifully prepared with a modern touch. Lovely service and a real find.
Brilliant food and good service - as usual. Also tried some of the new dishes on the menu (top marks all round) - loved the quail pakoras and dal with dill. Also old favourites such as the chicken livers, beetroot roti, venison bhuna. So happy to be able to take my sister to Clays; very proud to have them in Reading.
Not your typical Asian Curry restaurant but a cosy friendly place with amazing food. Unusual home cooked dishes full of flavour all unique. Highly recommended and will definitely be going back. Staff are friendly and helpful.
Since opening in the summer of 2018 in a town full of curry houses, Clay's has jumped to the number one spot in my opinion. The cuisine is Hyderabadi and it is absolutely delicious. The menu is unlike any other in Reading, with every dish an absolute gem full of flavor and often wonderfully rich.
Unusually, the menu has both excellent vegan choices and a lot of game. As a vegetarian I have plenty of choice. The paneer majestic truly is majestic. The Hyderabadi style aubergines are a fabulous main. The rice is so fragrant and well spiced. My husband recommends the venison bhuna and the rabbit curry.
The clay pot biriyanis are a specialty and are amazing. The sides and extras are well worth ordering for the unusual (around here) options. Okra, which isn't slimy, potatoes cooked in their pickling spices, deep fried battered chillis. I could go on...
Run by a husband and wife couple, who are friendly and who somehow manage to chat to each table whilst also managing a busy restaurant.
Thanks Clay's and keep up the good work!
Absolutely divine - so many unique and tasty dishes to choose from. The starters in particular were delicious - highly recommend the quail pakora!
There's also a wide range of vegan options, which is great to see :-)
A lovely family-run business too, its so nice to see an independent restaurant in chain-centric Reading. I wish is every success and will definitely be back!
Excellent as always, good new additions to the menu
Loverly food different from your clasic Indian but much more interesting and flovoursome.
Rabbit main was a bit chewy, probably wouldnt go for this again, but lamb and Venison curries were great.
Clay's is one of our "go to" curry restaurants. They always try to extend their dishes so it's nice going back to try new stuff. Staff and owners are lovely.
The dishes are properly balanced with flavour, and just really really nice. Great selection of starters/mains and sides. It's mid-priced I'd say. The last meal for 2 cost £85 inc tip (this was 3 starters, 3 pints of IPA, 2 mains and 4 sides).
Interesting food. I really enjoyed the Kodi chips and would recommend them to anyone.
Portions are not too big, so one can easily go through starter and main (and might even have room for a dessert).
Nice and cosy venue, not too big, so prior booking is recommended.
They add 10% service charge to all bills.
i met my friend for a birthday dinner and catch up. We loved the food for its interesting twist on the traditional, the ambiance for playing the blues which somehow fit and the overall experience which had us go away with a warm fuzzy feeling. We promised each other to meet here again very soon, considering she doesn’t come into Reading very much. (Photo of bread pudding which we looked and tasted yum)
Wonderful food. My new favourite restaurant in Reading.
Excellent food from beginning to end, friendly service and great West Berkshire Brewery IPA. Will definitely be visiting again.
2nd time here. First time was 5 stars! This time a lot busier, service slow and food average. Will go again but will avoid busy nights.
Cannot recommend highly enough. Excellent food (very different to what is generally served up as Indian food), freshly cooked; superb service.
Friendly and lively atmosphere, pretty cosy when busy. The service was good and efficient. The food as ever was outstanding, with lots of vegan options. Would like to see the vegan options change more often, however, love the addition of a vegan dessert (although I didn't have room for it!) . Very local and convenient for us, we will be back!
Never been disappointed with a meal at Clay's and this was no exception. Everything we had was amazing - especially liked the paneer majestic, which I haven't tried before.
This was my second visit and it was every bit as good as I remembered.
Absolutely amazing food - delicious, and so much more variety and flavour than most Indian restaurants
Delicious food! The best restaurant I've been to in a while. The starters in particular were very tasty and the service very good. Will definitely be back!
The food was certainly overpriced in comparison to other similar restaurants. A pint of beer was £5.50 which is excessive for a very basically laid out restaurant with Formica tables. Wine was £13.50 for 1/2 litre.
Service was OK, but I had to ask for hot plates as opposed to the initial cold plates given.
The menu does not actually state the price in pounds. You have to guess that the figure on the far right is £'s. Also, there is no indication of the heat strength of the dish, which is a serious failing. So you gamble on whether it is a spicy hot dish or not. The number of dishes available is very limited compared to other Indian style restaurants, but there were enough options to choose from. However, the food is certainly very different from the usual Indian restaurants, and should be tried. The food was definitely very good.
One thing that I did not like on the bill was an automatic 10% service charge. So give it a try and see what you think!
Exceptionally authentic food that puts Clay’s ahead of the usual Indian restaurants. Flavours are exceptional and the service is attentive and precise.
Absolutely delicious meal and friendly staff. So much else to explore on the menu that the next visit is already booked.
Does what it says on the tin - genuine Hyderabad biryani and authentic cuisine. Good start.
The food was amazing, so tasty. I had a the venison bhuna and it was incredible. We will definitely be going back.
Different experience from the usual Indian restaurant- because it is Hyderabadi. A Must Visit experience.
Clay’s serves the best, most authentic Indian cuisine for miles around. Every dish has been thought out with the utmost care and we discover new favourites on every visit. One of the few “must try “ places in Reading.
Delicious food which is full of flavour. Moong bean fritters were delightful and my husband absolutely loved the chicken livers. Biryani for main, not what I’d usually order, but it is their specialty, and I’m so glad I did! Other main we had was Venison Bhuna, also excelllent. Indian beers and Indian inspired beers brewed by local brewery. Casual atmosphere with room downstairs for group bookings. Owners are very friendly and I am pleased this new restaurant is doing well.
10/10 best curry house in Reading. Absolutely loved all courses, full of flavour and good portions
