I had been to cornerstone 4 weeks earlier and raves about it to everyone ( Thursday lunch ) . This time we felt very rushed , sauces weren’t quite as special as before and the service was hit and miss ( Saturday lunch time)
Overpriced for what it was
We left hungry to be honest
The food at Cornerstone was exceptional. We opted for the Tasting Menu along with a request for scallops and the turbot with chicken butter sauce. This was more than enough for my fiancée and I (I was worried based on other reviews that the portion sizes wouldn’t quite fill us up).
Never had fish cooked so well, would definitely go back.
Wow - can quite see why this restaurant wins awards. It just has to be the best place to eat fish in the UK - the curing and cooking of it was perfect, with such interesting flavours. We sat at the counter so we could watch the service unfold and were really pleased we did.
Amazing lunch! Every dish tasted delicious - the staff were great. Definitely keen to go back.
Amazing food, service and atmosphere in general. Highly recommended.
Wow! Wonderful interesting flavour but never over powering the main star which was the seafood. A definite destination restaurant. Call in at the Crate Brewery for a beer before. The perfect evening!
AMAZING sea-food, knowledgeable waitresses/waiters. We loved the ambiance of the place, quiet restaurant with locally made artworks on display you can buy. It's great that you can see the chefs in action. The prices are not cheap but the food is a real treat, and they do a great lunch menu for £38.
Amazing food and great atmosphere for lunch. We need a Cornerstone in Cardiff.
We had a great meal at this place. We shared 6 dishes and each was delicious but it was the cured gurnard with nuts, grapes and yogurt that won our dish of the day. We will certainly be back.
Great vibe ,lovely staff & very efficient
Tasting menu to be recommended
The only time food has made me feel emotional is at Cornerstone. The scallops were especially outstanding
Went for a birthday lunch and and it was fantastic. Fabulous fish dishes of epic deliciousness. Great service. Want to go again.
I found several of the dishes were overpowered by the accompanying sauce. The mackerel patty was a notable exception.
First came for my Birthday lunch in February, my daughter was away so brought her for lunch last Friday , it was as amazing as our first visit everything first class
The food was outstanding, probably the best I’ve had in London for a very long time. We celebrated our anniversary there, which was ideal
Great restaurant with superb service. Ambience subdued but was a lunch sitting.
The food was excellent but we felt a little hassled by the serving staff with water and wine being topped up so regularly and plates removed so quickly after the last mouthful - and even before on two occasions - that it felt as if we were being rushed through our meal.
A very nice, relaxed ambience, a different concept/approach to eating, Cornerstone is a ‘Fish’ only restaurant serving small dishes, from bread to John Dorey Fish, they recommend selecting about 8 small dishes to share for 2 people but entirely up to the individual, maybe bread ( to die for), an Oyster, scollops and what I would describe as a main fish dish, we chose the John Dorey.
A light lunch may consist of just the bread ( a must ) and a hot ‘Fish’ dish and a nice glass of wine!
Just have as much or as little as you want, whatever you fancy.
There are some real ‘advanced’ fish dishes on the menu but just have a ‘go’ you will be surprised and definitely not disappointed.
Staff extremely polite, friendly and helpful.
Fantastic restaurant with a great vibe, the menu is amazing along with the cocktails. highly recommend this place.
We had to book long in advance for our 6-8pm slot at Cornerstone. We made sure to be there a couple of minutes early, only to find that the restaurant was still closed and the young and friendly reception staff, possibly not very experienced, looked at us and other couples arriving as if they were unaware of it being 5:58pm. They didn’t quite know what to do with us and simply shut the door explaining they open bang on at 6pm. Another couple went to the pub next door. We decided to wait and they let us in a few minutes later. No big deal, but you’d expect more expert reception and handling of customers in a restaurant of this kind, especially if they ask you to arrive on time and leave the table bang on at 8pm! Our main waiter was friendly and and helpful enough. Some of the dishes were truly exceptional and surprising. We tasted pretty much the whole menu and we loved everything. G&Ts and the Gavi we ordered were also spot on. I found the chairs a bit uncomfortable for dining, possibly perfect for lounging if only you could sit back and relax after dinner, instead of having to leave the table as soon as you’ve spooned in the last mouthful of dessert. I would go back 100% for the culinary experience but at this price I’ve been to other restaurants, in Hackney alone, where the overall customer experience matches better the high food standards.
Great experience from start to finish always leaves me wanting more.
Excellent food and wine. Really great dining space and good service.
Excellent food and service. Quite expensive but in my view worth it
Top top quality ingredients handled with great skill to make super tasty and inventive fish dishes of all kinds.
This restaurant is a local gift... a vibrant unstuffy atmosphere, in a great space with very friendly and knowledgeable staff who make every trip special and fun... Cornerstone ticks all the boxes for my idea of what eating out should be.
Wonderful place - great food; friendly and knowledgeable service. The only downside is location. It’s a little inaccessible unless you live in east London. Otherwise a very enjoyable evening and a restaurant which I look forward to revisiting.
Best meal I have had in 2019. Very attentive staff, chilled atmosphere and wonderful to see the master Tom Brown at work in the kitchen
Amazing food, friendly and efficient staff and great atmosphere. Our second time dining here and it didn’t disappoint!
Overhyped, overpriced, and underwhelming. Except for the fish, which was often completely overwhelmed by the sauces it came in. The lobster - the special of the day - was delicious but not enough to save the meal. Perky, but inadvertently overzealous service: too many waiters not communicating = being asked if everything is okay more than my therapist dares.
First the positives - I doubt whether we will ever eat more delicious fish than our ‘main’ courses of plaice in chicken butter sauce or cod in curry sauce, they were divine. It was great to see the chefs at work in the middle of the restaurant, it really added a bit of theatre to the experience. But I say ‘mains’ because everything was of the small plate variety so as our waiter explained, not starters and mains but all to be shared. However all was fish, there are no small plates of potato or other carbs o the whole meal was not very filling other than the treacle bread with the mackerel pate ‘starter’. Two of us made the mistake of ordering the crab crumpet which literally was a crumpet with crab and cheese sauce on, for 16 quid? I know crab is expensive but thought this was poor value and why drown it with a rarebit type sauce, So we had to order another ‘main’ to share and were still hungry when we left, drinks £50, v nice Bloody Mary and white wine, food £150 for four. The menu is small, of course the fish is seasonal but some nice greens and carbs could still be sharing plates but would pad the meal out. The service was friendly but too much at times, overly interfering with how we wanted to share our wine and even refolding my serviette on the table when I went to the loo!
A great selection of dishes available! The pollock and curry sauce is to die for!
Strongly recommended to everyone.
Chef Tom cleverly executed full flavour from the individual ingredients. Except Malaysia, been a long time in London I had fish cooked in such perfection. Just melt into my mouth. Oyster with seaweed hot sauce just taste of seawater! Mackerel pate serve with treacle bread is exceptionally clever invented.
Very please to know Cornerstone is supporting fishing man in UK. They risk their life to provide us to have all the delicious seafoods.
Lunch is great, not too busy, noice level is moderate, staffs are smily and friendly, with casually service, made us feel very welcome and comfortable.
Smart uniform and unfussy. Love the rose colour cutlery. Full of natural light at the environment.
I am a pudding person, and I wish I have all the puddings on the menu! Perhaps my next visit for sure!
Now I understand why my daughter is the fan.
I would love to have Cornerstone as my client, to me, is a cool and clever brand.
Thank you Tom Brown. x
Beautiful, imaginative food with high quality ingredients. Great service and decor.
Food taste surprised delicious.
Great food and excellent service. Very nice feel and atmosphere too. Thanks for a fantastic evening guys, all of the team were great!
It was my second time at this restaurant and again I loved it. They accommodated my request to have a pram next to the table and chef Tom was also there, which makes it real!
Magnificent in very way!
We identified Cornerstone after reading an article about the chef Tom Brown and his new venture. The sample menu on the website read well and as we both love fish, we thought we’d book.
The service was friendly and attentive without being overbearing and the atmosphere was relaxing (we were there for lunch).
We both had the tasting menu which we thought was perfectly proportioned and well balanced. The crab crumpet was to die for and the gurnard was superb, but all the dishes were really tasty.
The wine list is reasonably priced too with a good selection.
We thought that the standard of food was excellent, innovative without being pretentious and demonstrated the great and diverse flavours that the sea has to offer.
