Typical Cottons dishes include jerk chicken; homemade curried mutton; and Cottons most popular vegetarian dish Chaguanas Dinner Plate - chana dhal curry served with black eyed bean, chick pea and callaloo fritters, and plantain. All jerk meats at Cottons are grilled and smoked over coals and oak wood chips with hickory and pimiento and covered in Cottons homemade jerk sauce.
Cocktails are predominantly rum-based featuring Cottons originals like Sorrell Sling – beefeater gin, homemade sorrel squash, fresh lemon, creme de casssis and soda water; Cottons Punch and Killer Doppi made from four different rums.
Very well decorated restaurant, food was amazing! I would definitely recommend this place
A lovely atmosphere. I went in the evening but I’m sure the views are lovely during the day as the restaurant by the Thames.
My son celebrated his 18th birthday and it was a nice evening. Only issue is they disposed of my cake box but the manager was very nice and supportive.
Lovely food, music not too loud a bonus when you want to talk with friends.
Single brunch dish was a bit disappointing but service good and the free flow certainly was
Tastey food and good drinks. Bar tender was cool and made some great cocktails
Brilliant restaurant with polite staff. The food was great too. Can’t wait to go there again.
We were late but they were still very accommodating! Thank you! 😀
Prawn starter was nice, however jerk chicken was disappointing. It was seasoned chicken, but with jerk sauce poured over it and was not barbecued, not authentic at all. This was brought to the attention of the staff, but nothing was done.
Dessert of chocolate rum cake was disappointing as well. Absolutely no rum was in this cake and the cake had a very artificial taste of chocolate. The cream served on the side also seemed to be some type of cream from a can!! If you know your Caribbean food then this is not the place for you.
We really had fun at Cottons Vauxhall. Both being fans of Caribbean food, the menu was extensive enough to cater for most tastes and trimmed enough to know what you're getting is fresh. Portion sizes are generous - our starter platter could have easily been a main. The vibe in the restaurant on a Saturday was fun, vibrant and bustling - with people in for a cocktail or two at the bar as well as the dining crowd. Noise levels were pretty high - a reflection on the general enjoyment of the customers - but if you're after an intimate candle-lit dinner, Cottons Vauxhall may not be your first choice. We loved it though and will definitely be back.
There was no coleslaw but we were still charged for it as part of the meal. We ordered drinks which never arrived on multiple occasions. Some of the vegetables served were starting to rot and smelt bad. Main dishes took a long time to come out. Took a long time to get served at the bar.
It was a Friday night, we were a group of 7 and there were many other large groups there celebrating birthdays so this may have contributed to the issues we faced above but perhaps more staff are needed at peak times to help avoid this.
On a positive, the curry goat was lovely, with minimal fat and bone, and good portion size.
Having visited the restaurant early in December I couldn’t wait to return as the food drinks ambiance was perfect. The experience was completely different from the initial visit mainly that the food did not taste fresh, the wings was tough which also had a strange smell as if they were off. I was looking forward to the jerk salmon which I had before but again it did not taste fresh or like jerk. The service was extremely slow & at times we felt ignored albeit the restaurant was not that busy. I may try a different branch but will not visit Vauxhall again
The food and the ambience was very good. The service was 2 star not very friendly or attentive. The server did not come over to ask how the food was. If you could improve the customer service you would be on your way to a good restaurant
Great experience, would have been 5 stars but they didn't have the callaloo for the Yardie breakfast. The replacement with spinach was very tasty though and I would have liked a larger potion. The overall breakfast was delicious and I would go again.
This is a very nice place and the food was amazing !!
Great place to eat with great food
Food was great as always, enjoyed so if the new items in the menu!
Good ambience and food, service could have been better, not enough staff to serve all customers
I write this review as somebody who is of Caribbean descent and has eaten this cuisine my whole life.
Firstly the positives - the restaurant has a great atmosphere and is very well located by the river which would be great in the summer. The drinks were also really nice.
Now for the food, I ordered the sea food platter expecting a platter and what I really received was a dish of small cuts from different fish with some rice, unripe fried plantain, rice and gravy. My friends also ordered food which was missing several of the items that were supposed to be included for instance, fish stew without two ingredients stated from the menu. When queried with staff, we were informed that these items were not available - this should have been relayed to us at the point of ordering.
There is potential for this to be a great restaurant, firstly by employing Caribbean chefs who know what the authentic Caribbean flavours are and most importantly who know what Trini doubles are! The restaurant manager was very apologetic and did his best to make up for the shortcomings, however, but serving unripe plantain in a Caribbean restaurant?
Unlikely I'll be back unless I hear that the food has vastly improved. Great music and ambiance though and a really good Bartender.
Really great restaurant. Staff were attentive, and the food was tasty
Not one person asked how my meal was, no-one checked to make sureI was ok and I have never visited a restaurant who have been unable to issue a VAT receipt. Cannto recommend your business I'm afraid. Real shame as the food was nice but the service was non existent.
Front and rear entrance is not marked, regardless, no concierge, had to walk to the bar and ask about my table. Waitress was slow quiet and not engaging. The Jerk Chicken was cooked well but a bit bland. Indistinguishable vegetables and the chocolate rum cake was terrible.
As always I enjoyed my Evening very much
I will return
The whole experience was very good except that portions sizes eg rice could be bigger. Cocktails on a whole abit pricey & too much ice. The staff were friendly & attentive to our needs.
Nicely decorated resturant positioned in a great location by the riverbank off Vauxhall Bridge. Disappointed in the food, distinctly average, we ate our main from the jerk menu - found the chicken over seasoned and greasy. Desert was inedible and had to be sent back - they did refund this and apologise. Delicious cocktails, I would go back for the cocktails not the food.
I loved visiting this restaurant, the cool runnings cocktail was really refreshing.
We were impressed with the presentation of all our food and drink. I had the vegetarian dhal which tasted fantastic and the portions were just right. We will definitely return.
I bought a cake to takeaway and when I got home I was very upset the cake was burnt and so hard I wasted my time very upset
Great service, the food is amazing and the cocktails so tasty! Really good concoctions and a strong rum punch. Happy hour was a bonus. Everyone enjoyed their meals, even down to dessert. The only thing I could fault was the bill being brought when we hadn't asked and were happy to stay and drink afterwards. The music was on point too!
This was our 2nd visit to Cottons in Vauxhall after having a mixed experience on my first two occasions, one good and the next not so, but having thoroughly enjoyed the West Indian dishes and especially the cocktails, including several Cottons and Reggae Rum Punches. The restaurant was busy with a nice vibe mellow reggae music playing in the background and I was pleased that I had made a reservation for our group of five on OpenTable, thus securing a prime location table with the trusted signage that we all like to see "RESERVED".
We were all seated promptly whilst arriving at different times the staff were attentive and professional throughout, offering helpful recommendations on dishes to try including Jerk 1/2 Chicken, Seafood Platter and Beef Au Rhum. We all agreed that the cocktails were very good and this is high compliment coming from a group of seasoned Rum, Cognac, Vodka, Whiskey, Beer and any other alcoholic beverage you can think of drinkers.😂
The cocktails definitely got the night fired up and the staff were busy keeping us well lubricated with Cocktails, Red Stripe and the occasional Cranberry Juice for me as the designated driver, that's right keeping my crew safe.😎
The starters which included the Tiger Prawns, Ebony Wings and Smoked Ribs were excellent and all meat dishes were well seasoned and delivering a authentic taste arriving promptly and warm from a very professional group of waitresses, with the occasional table visit from the duty Manager to make sure that all was in order which was appreciated by all.
We normally don't delve into the dessert menu but when an eagle eyed member of the team who is partial to a crumble (ME!) spotted the Apple & Mango Crumble with vanilla ice cream it was all over, four were immediately ordered along with a Baked Vanilla Cheesecake. As a crumble aficionado I would have liked to have the choice between ice cream or much more appropriate custard in winter.
A great ambience highly recommended.
Amazing food! The best in a long time I’ve tasted and great staff
Excellent food, the Mutton was special and the Mixed Grill for 2 was huge and very colourful!
The oxtail and rice and peas and plantain was so delicious. However, the Mac n cheese was quite bland. The ebony chicken wings and salt fritters were also really nice.
Service could have been better, considering it was a birthday booking but that was all over looked and we had to keep trying to get attention to be served, but food was good
The food was excellent, seasoned to compliment and not overpower the food. Being from the Caribbean I'm very particular and was pleasantly surprised at how delicious both my husband's and my meals were..wasn't hit and miss, every dish was tasty from start to main.
The experience was spoiled by the inconsistent service. Full attention was given to a lively party and several times we had to leave our seats to seek service/staff. To be fair whenever we finally dealt with someone they were polite. Our deserts were forgotten because a handover went wrong when the person seeing to us ended their shift! The manager offered us shots for the disappointment because the kitchen closed but by then the flow of the evening had been spoiled. If the service was tighter and the floor managed better it would have been a brilliant experience. The food is 10 out of 10. Oh and the music is great too!
Tasty food, great cocktails & a good choice of other drinks and a very friendly atmosphere
The location is great. Food was average, needs more flavour. Staff do need more training particularly to be able to upsell. I asked what they would recommend and the waitress pointed to English breakfast !! on the brunch menu & wasn’t able to recommend any on the main menu. It is a Caribbean restaurant!!! Service could also be improved by orders being written down. We ordered two drinks and they came with 3! and they challenged us. I actually forgot to check if we were charged for the extra drink, which was taken away. We also had to ask for water even though water glasses were on the table. Then at the end of our meal a male waiter walked by and plonked a carafe of water on the table , without a even asking if we wanted another or saying a word. It really is the little details that need attention, such as not asking if you’ve finished your starter when you’re clearly still eating it, because the mains were ready. This made us feel rushed and the restaurant wasn’t full, plus I made a reservation. The reason for coming to Cottons was to treat my friend who just turned 60 and I remember eating at Cottons in Camden, years ago and the good food. Vauxhall was much easier to get to. We enjoyed being able to mark the birthday but the experience left us feeling nonplused. We didn’t even get a thankyou for coming when we left. We do not want Cottons to fail in this new location, so please pay attention to customer feedback.
Book on the morning which was great for the part of 10 nice ambiance sunny September Sunday. Unfortunately half of the food was unavailable to order. I was quickly told nicely by one of the staff. Disappointed as the weekend was predicted to be hot so why run out of food. No beef, no curry coat, no Jerk chicken. No one eats pork so we were limited to Oxtail not my personal favorite so choice limited.
Had a beautiful dinner on the outside. Selection of desserts much toooo sweet cut down on the sugar please. I have the mango pie with ice cream just a mouthful of sugar Im afraid more tropical options please.
Great ambience, value for ur £
We were there for a 80th birthday meal with my children's Jamaican grandmother. Staff were very helpful, the food met her expectations and we had a great time. Kids options were a little limited, and in my view the burger and mac and cheese were a bit complex for young kids and didn't go down well.
Great location, great service, the food was amazing and we will definitely return
