Restaurant was quiet on a Monday lunchtime, but very welcoming. Staff were lovely, we had afternoon tea which was beautifully presented and each item explained to us. The vegetarian was well catered for. Three savoury items, a lovely miniature scone and four different desserts were all delicious.

When you go to a restaurant with the limitations of ordering gluten free and diary free you are often left feeling let down or disappointment, often you feel like a nuisance. But not at Craft Dinning Rooms. The effort made by the staff and chef was incredible. The professionalism and service of this team was impeccable and it started from the very first moment with a homely and welcoming atmosphere. The menu was beautifully balanced and bursting with favours and textures to excite. We had such an immense feeling of satisfaction leaving and really felt like it was incredible value. Thanks so much everyone for a great evening. Carol from Cork.

The food was wonderful, however unfortunately it was really cold on the restaurant! The waiter told us the ICC control the temperature and not the staff which seemed odd. All staff were friendly and efficient. We thought the restaurant seemed a little empty for a Saturday night, however this may be as it is relatively new. Disappointed there was no chocolate related desert but that’s just a personal preference. The carrot cake trifle was lovely! Great selection of cocktails and gins!

I rang directly to book for Sunday lunch. I was told that they were fully booked. I checked online and found several available times so booked.
We asked the person serving us a couple of questions about the wine list, but she couldn’t answer. The same person also laid the knife and forks incorrectly on our table.
The food was nicely cooked but it was absolutely bland, nothing had been seasoned and there was no condiments on the table.
We asked for horseradish, but was told they had ran out.
The restaurant itself is beautifully done. Would be a shame if they didn’t survive.

First time visit to the restaurant having checked the menu out on line seemed a good selection and close to the venue we were attending that night. No draught beers only bottles which wasn't a major issue but when we were seated the menu only contained about 6 mains none of which I would have chosen. We were told that the correct menu had not been updated on their website. We asked if there was steak available and was told we don't stock steak ?. We then settled on a mixture of starters to be then told they had a xmas party in the night before which some guests had cancelled and there were 3 sirloin steaks left over and did we want them. We accepted but was very disappointed as the steaks were cold and under cooked. I cant fault the manageress as she was very accommodating and took the price of the meals off the bill but the overall experience wasn't good and not likely to return.

This restaurant suffers from looking and feeling cold and lifeless - once they’ve changed the light bulbs for a warmer colour that should help, but after that they just need more people in. However the portions of food are really small - the food is nice enough, but the portions just don’t feel anything like value for money. After 3 courses you could still be hungry!

Lovely early prix fix meal. We both had some delicious prawns to start with.
Limited choice for early dining menu, but was good all the same. I had belly pork with a risotto and my partner had fresh mackerel. Looking forward to our next visit!

Wrap up warm as their heating is controlled centrally by the icc and it was freezing on a November lunchtime. We were significantly u comfortable, as other diners appeared to be too, wrapped up in pashminas and scarfs! Food was really good, but service was nervous and over attentive. Combined with the cold this meant we were not put at ease and struggled to find our catch up lunch relaxing.

Craft Dining Rooms
Responded on 11 November 2019

Thanks for your review, as we are new to the site and the heating is controlled externally with the recent weather front we was untested in respect of the current heating system being adequate enough. As a result I have personally commissioned the installation of an air blade system this Saturday which will cover the full venue and assist with this aspect. Naturally we can only apologise and I hope you can see we react fully when feedback is issued.

Hi there, thanks for your review depending on when you come will react with timings and how busy it can be for example Saturday had well over 100 guests, our menu options have over 30 items we find to ensure the food quality is high keeping the options around this number is the correct approach.

Had high hopes off the back of a recommendation to go here, and having spent over £200 on dinner we were a little disappointed. The restaurant lacks atmosphere and ambience as it is an incredibly large space. we had 3 courses and the stand out dish was certainly the dessert, it was incredible! However starters and mains are on the small size and at £30 for a main course I expected a bit more, there didn't appear to be a 'side' section to the menu either? No bread or amuse bouche you might expect in a high end restaurant and helps to fill you up. We had to keep filling our own wine glasses despite there being a lot of staff waiting around. If a few elements were improved on this could be a great restaurant.

We were the only table, which we didn't mind as it was a Monday evening, so that didn't affect my view of the restaurant. However, considering we were the only table, the service was poor. There were four staff on the front of house, with the older lady of the two being great, the other lacked a lot of skill and friendliness. The younger ale serving our table was polite, but looked petrified every time we asked for something. All staff were stood around waiting for us to go towards the end of the evening (coats on, stood at the bar). The food, for the cost, was terrible. The flavours were all mediocre and the wellington (that you're charging £30 for) was overcooked. We don't mind smaller portions when we're eating fine food, but this was fine food prices for a menu that was lacking. The best part of the meal was the cheeseboard, which says a lot. Although, the cheese wasn't on the menu, so thank you for allowing us to order this, some restaurants wouldn't. Overall, we could have eaten at a Michelin for the price we paid, and adding a service charge in Birmingham just isn't the done thing, so I'd reconsider that, especially for the service we experienced. If that tip is to make up staff wages, I think the company need to pay staff properly, rather than put that cost onto customers. It's a shame, as the decor was stunning.

We ate from the set menu so the value was very good but I had to ask for that menu as it wasn't given to us automatically. The food was delicious but time between courses rather lengthy especially as there were only 6 other customers. I also had to enquire whether the advertised coffee was still included FOC with this set menu as again it wasn't offered. Having said all this it is the perfect spot for a pre concert supper at the Sympony Hall so really surprised that they had so few customers.

The food was quite good although we were amazed that they had no bread to eat with our starters. The meat was good as was the rice pudding.

The single glasses of wine were extremely expensive.

The ambiance of the restaurant could be improved with the addition of some plants to break up the area.

Pre-theatre meal at 1730hrs so not really the best time to fully appreciate the experience. The food was the highlight, beautifully cooked fish mains and unbelievable sweets, their soufflé is the finest I've ever tasted. The ambience was just so quiet for a Friday night, about six other covers, even though we left just before 1900hrs it was still a small number for a Mall restaurant. The service was very good, although only two courses and coffee it was prompt, courteous and friendly. This venture deserves to prosper, perhaps not as a casual dining venue but as a top class "foodie" haunt with their undoubtedly excellent cuisine and extensive wine list. We consider it is worth another specific visit to discover if the first very good impression can be turned into an excellent experience.

Starters were expensive £10 for two scallops is taking the mick. Mains were tepid - I suspect they’d been left hanging around. The room temperature was on the cool side and largely empty despite having struggled to book a slot weeks in advance. No working driers or towels in gents all night despite telling management this at start of evening. Overall much too expensive for the quality of food and overall experience.

Craft Dining Rooms
Responded on 14 October 2019

The price of scallops is 28% less than 8 comparable places in the area, hand dived scallops cost £3.12 plus vat each to buy in. On the evening if your mains were not as you would have liked we would have addressed that concern, in respect of the heating this is very much personal preference and again we would have been happy to turn it up if requested. In respect of it being quiet we had 92 covers in. I am also unsure why you struggled to book when you used the online platform.

The food was really good. The waitress disinterested make it clear that the only menu on offer was the Sunday menu. So they could have saved us time picking things that we couldn’t have. However, following that the service was really good.

The food was great & the Sunday menu was good value for money as you did get a lot of food for the main course. I had the prawns for starter & they did come with their shells on which I personally find quite annoying when your paying so much for the food. Too much hassle & if the shell doesn’t come off well you end up with not much left so would like them to have been removed already.

The wine selection is vast but is all good quite expensive & so is the beer. They only offer this in bottles & I believe they were about £7 for a 500ml bottle.

We went as we got a 20% discount with the independent Birmingham card so that made up for the cost of the drinks. Overall was a very nice experience.

Hi Michelle, thanks for your review we are glad that overall you enjoyed the meal. In respect of the King Prawns this aspect is one of those that is really personal preference, however maybe a good way forward is we could ask the customer which way they would prefer. I have fed this aspect back. In respect of the wine we do have glasses of wine from £5 which very much industry standard now, the cost of produce is getting hirer, in respect of Beer this ranges from £4.50.

The food was excellent. It was only half full but the décor and atmosphere of the place was good. Music was modern and not too loud. Service was good but we were in a rush for the theatre and it was more leisurely than we had hoped. We should have made this clear beforehand but, even so, a 30 minutes for the sweet was excessive. When the sweet arrived it was impressive and delicious. They did apologise as they were short staffed in the kitchen and deducted it from the bill. I would definitely go back!

Hi Michael, thanks for the review apologies for the time period we make everything from scratch and its all 100% fresh, I assume with the dessert you had either Souflee or the toffee apple, these take 20-25 mins to cook fresh I have taken a note to update the menu to make this 100% clear. I also checked the staffing we did have one person who phoned in sick ironically in pastry so this would have had an impact too. We do hope we see you again soon

The restaurant has a relaxed atmosphere and the young staff are keen to please. Portions are generous and the cooking is done with care .How pleasant not to have over seasoned food which is a common complaint in many fine dining restaurants I have visited. This is classic cooking with a twist .However, as we commented at the time, the food needed to be hotter as it was at best, tepid on arrival .There is room for a pre-theatre menu to fill the very quiet restaurant at 6 -7.30pm. I do hope this place is a success in what is becoming a fairly crowded market in central Birmingham at this level of eating out .

A great experience.
Staff were very helpful and a credit to the restaurant.

Starters : wild boar and black pudding sausage roll was superb. Scallops were perfectly cooked.

Mains: cod - perfect. Chef understands fish and seafood.
Beef Wellington - we had a delay, as the wellington was over cooked and so not served. The right decision. Staff explained the issue and it a new wellington was cooked. Came out perfectly pink.

Dessert : James Cadbury Salted Caramel Choux was lovely. My soufflé was amazing.

Wine- ordered a red but wasn't to my taste. The sommelier swapped the bottle without complaint, instead suggesting a better match. And it was.

Craft Dining Rooms is where Strada used to be.

Table booked for 17:15 with the aim of being out by 18:35 for the 19:00 concert at Symphony Hall.

My companions enjoyed their Pork Belly although it could have been hotter. My starter (beer battered cod) arrived with my main course (trout) at around 18:05. The cod was obviously one that got away; the batter was over-cooked and there was a distinct lack of cod. The trout was tasty but again, somewhat lukewarm.

Unfortunately, the waiter clumsily dropped a used knife on my shirt leaving some mashed potato residue. Apology made, apology accepted, move on. These things happen.

At 18:40 I went to pay the bill which I had requested when dessert was ordered some 10 minutes before. I was assured that the desserts were just being plated and indeed they arrived as I waited to pay the bill. My companions enjoyed the desserts and were apparently told that we should expect two hours for a three course meal.

This was disappointing overall. The restaurant was probably about one quarter capacity, there were lots of serving staff with not much to do and clearly not enough staff in the kitchen. Given the proximity to Symphony Hall and the Rep, Craft Dining Rooms clearly need to give thought to their location and staffing levels; otherwise, the way of Strada becomes an option.

We visited Craft on a Friday evening and it was pretty much empty which made for a distinct lack of atmosphere. We explained that we'd need to turn around in about an hour as we were going to a show at Symphony Hall and were made to feel uncomfortable and rushed - surely that can't be unusual based on its location?? The food itself was nice but vastly overpriced....c.£20-25 for gastro style meal that required sides. We inquired about the set menu as advertised on the website but were told by the waitress she'd have to go and check with her manager as we should have ticked a box when booking - again we did not have time for some sort of negotiation and left a poor feeling with us re customer service.

Craft Dining Rooms
Responded on 30 September 2019

Thanks for your review I am naturally sorry you felt that the venue lacked atmosphere the reality is at that time on a Friday at 16:55 its unlikely to be busy as the most of the covers on a Friday evening are based around the evening, the Set Menu finishes on a Friday afternoon at 3pm so apologies this wasn't available, however our main menu has starters from £6 and main courses from £15.00 and therefore often customers can always gain a 3 course meal for a fraction more than the set menu cost
