David Burke at Orange Lawn
Excellent service, great ambience and exceptional food.
Loved this place. David Burke was there and came by our table. Great experience. Food was fantastic!!
This was our first visit and we totally enjoyed it. We will definitely return.
We really enjoyed the lobster dumplings, steak with gnocchi and banana cream pie with toasted coconut. I do not recommend the scallops and octopus entree, but everything else was very good.
Overall experience was good. A few dishes missed the mark however. We ordered Tuna tar tar tacos after seeing them at another table. There was far less tuna than you’d assume by looking at them from a distance. The cavatelli was recommended but the peas were undercooked and the cavatelli themselves were too big and far too thick. (To their credit we were comped that dish.) The octopus and scallops as well as burrata salad were good. For dessert we opted not to wait the 20 min for chocolate cake and instead ordered a hazelnut chocolate one. It was clearly prepared earlier (even the chocolate drizzle on the plate) and kept in the fridge and we could certainly tell.
The restaurant is only a few months old so we’ll give it another shot, hoping they work out a few kinks.
So happy to see David Burke open his new outposts at the Orange Lawn. The renovations are spectacular and the food and wine is spot on. Welcome to the neighborhood!
Everything was perfect!
The food was spectacular particularly the clothesline bacon and the various fish dishes. The david burke team was very attentive as usual to our every need. I can’t wait to return for another meal!
We were surprised when we received the bill and the special of the day (Veal Milanese) was $60
It would have been nice to mention the price of the dish when mentioning the specials
Being a fan of David Burke (and his brother, Robert, We really wanted to love this restaurant, but...
Negatives - dining room tables are too tight and close together
(Eliminate 3 tables)
Tables are too small
Service was terrible.
Had to send espresso back because it was cold and no scums
Worst part was the bill, overcharged for the wine and the espressos, and they added an additional membership fee onto the bill.
Will probably try again in a few months with the hope they get their kinks out and hire a better staff.
Wonderful! From the moment we pulled up the we felt welcome and greeted kindly. My husband and I had cocktails, several appetizers and dessert. We had decided not to get an entree because 3 appetizers was plenty of food for us (we are trying not to overeat!) Our server had no problem with this and we appreciate that! The crab raft and tuna taco were delicious and we had the banana coconut pie for dessert! Cocktails were creative and my wine was also very good.
Definitely going back (since we can walk to restaurant). If it just the two of us we may sit at bar and not in the dining room.
One of worst dining experiences I’ve ever had. Seated next to family with young children who were running around entire evening. We should have been offered different tables. Manager and David Burke were aware of the problem but did nothing.
Food was fair but value for price was poor
Overall a fabulous dining experience - staff was wonderful!
Great food fair service convenient
We arrived at 7:45 for an 8pm reservation. We were told to wait at the bar and a server would come take our drink orders. No server came. I placed my own order at the bar. At 8:30 we still had not been seated. When I asked the manager about our reservation she said oh I can find a table for you now. She was not apologetic. I was dismayed at the level of service. We left before dining and enjoyed a great dinner elsewhere.
Food and service were great. AC wasn’t working in main dining room and it was hot as hell and they did nothing about it. You would think they would have offered some discount or free desert or something. Especially being a new restaurant.
Food was excellent - menu was creative. Newly renovated space was quite pleasant. Service was very good.
Only complaint was that the main dining area got hotter as the evening went on, became impossible to ignore after a while.
Will be back.
Food was good. Service was not. The wrong food was brought out and then one of our party was not served her dinner 10 mins. after the rest of the party.
There was a long delay before our order was taken.
Tasting menu tuesdays are outstanding!
Overall experience was lovely. The food and drinks were delicious. Only issue is that the food came too fast and the drinks didn’t!
One of the best meals we've had in recent years. Absolutely perfect food and experience
The most innovative food anywhere in Essex county, prepared impeccably. The service could not be more attentive and the setting most pleasant.
This fresh, upscale yet relatable new spot is worth a try. The country club meets B&B vibe is a refreshing change from the new crop of Restoration Hardware inspired eateries in nearby Maplewood. We enjoyed the drinks and the shrimp and avocado appetizer was outstanding. We weren’t all that impressed with our entrées. The tuna was served lukewarm and while clearly fresh, it lacked flavor. And the pasta was too heavy and over salted. The service however was excellent and friendly, and David Burke meandered from table to table and say hello to guests in his casual and welcoming manner. A nice touch. I’m sure the food will only get better as they hit their stride. Desserts looked amazing though we were too full from the enormous popovers (who can resist) and that robust pasta. Next time.
Food was delicious
Visited 6 weeks into new restaurant. Menu and prep were excellent as was wait staff. Still some "kinks" in computer system and "front line staff" communication. Thought the ambiance was nice and casual, but pricing was a bit high for a location at a tennis club Will return with "eyes open" but less often than originally thought (because of the pricing).
After an awkward reception by the 3 people involved with the host stand ( despite an on time arrival for our rez) they agreed to seat us in the main DR after first attempting a table in another room. Then there was some initial confusion as to who our server was so we waited 20 minutes for someone to come over. Once we had Michael, we were in great hands- very knowledgable about the menu and accommodating when one item wasn't quite right. David Burke is still on top of his game when it comes to great taste, creativity and presentation.
The room was well appointed and had a nice buzz.
We could definitely overlook the early service missteps and come back soon.
The food and vibe was amazing!!!!!! My bf and I love David Burke restaurants in nyc so we were happy to hear one opened close to Montclair! The restaurant is the tennis club house that has been remodeled beautifully, with multiple dining settings. We chose the bar area because they have live music on Tuesdays.
The singer Lauren is so talented: great voice and takes requests. She made our night.
The food is superb and we didn’t expect anything less. The entrees were a bit pricey since they don’t all come with a side. He ordered the chicken which had a beautiful presentation and an accompaniment of peppers and couscous. I ordered the tuna which was a small portion and no side. Delicious but not worth the money.
The service was quite slow and the place was not busy at all since we came in for an early dinner. The manager is rude. He interrupted our meal to reiterate to my bf about how shorts are not allowed after 7. We were told this upon entrance and weren’t planning on staying past that time.... but the slow service unfortunately made it so. Also he was dressed in a very nice outfit that fit the country club look; we are members at a different club- we get how it goes. We were the youngest diners by far and many older gentlemen were dressed similarly and we watched and saw they were not reminded of the policy. So to interrupt our meal, single us out to repeat what we were already told made us uncomfortable. Considering only part of the staff and one manager were not sharply dressed. Yes there was a manager who maybe was wrapping up her shift and wearing shorts!!!!!
Can’t say we want to return based on that.
A nice place for the area. Beautiful setting with good food. Service was a little slow, and they seemed to be working through normal issues you would find in a new restaurant. Overall worth visiting, but don’t know that I would necessarily travel the 35 min back.
Perfect. Great food , country environment
Having eaten at other David Burke restaurants, I assume the food is great here. However this restaurant is so poorly managed that we didn't even stay to eat. There is no mention of dress code on the website so I didn't really think about it before we went. I was wearing dress shorts and a polo shirt when we arrived and I was told that shorts were not permitted. I indicated that there were several other men in shorts sitting within feet of us. The hostess told me that they were in the lounge area and that we could sit there if we wanted but that there were no shorts permitted in the dining room. I live only a few blocks away so I went home and changed, which I had no problem with. (Had I known there was a dress code, I would have dressed more appropriately to begin with.) When I returned, we were seated in the dining room and what did I see but several other men in the dining room wearing shorts. I asked the manager Raul, to explain the discrepancy and he needed to ask his general manager because he had no answer for it. When he finally returned several minutes later, he claimed that all of those men had been there since before 6, and that shorts were allowed in the dining room before 6. It was now 8:30, which would have meant that several parties had been sitting there for more than two and a half hours. I asked if that didn't seem a little capricious a policy and also so unclear that even he, the manager, didn't know it. I would have expected an apology for the confusion or something, but he literally just stared at me. I felt like we had no choice but to leave. Such a disappointment.
We went there to celebrate my birthday!
Service was exceptional!
Food was amazing.
We shared several dishes.
Great options with an a fabulous twist. Everything was delicious!!!
I don’t typically eat dessert. But it was my birthday - we ordered the chocolate lava cake. The presentation and the dessert was to die for.
I can't wait to go back !!!
Wonderful addition to the neighborhood. The place makes you feel very special.
Loved the food! Our server could have been better. A lovely old time country club ambiance
They didn’t seat us in the main dining room. The women who waited on us didn’t seem to know which way was up. I know the chef is well known, but I found both dishes to be so salty I couldn’t finish them. Perhaps if we were in the main dining room, the ambience and presentation of the food (amazing) would have made up for the salt and mediocrity of the staff, but ... just it just seemed off for a place of this stature.
Great new place to eat. The food was awsome and the servers were attentive. Definitely going back for seconds.
Obvious this place is new. Staff far out numbered the amount of guests yet it still took over 20 minutes for us to order our drinks and another 15 minutes to get our drinks and order our food. Lobster dumplings were flavorful but the dough was thick and doughy. Shrimp pasta entree was kind of standard and more of what you would expect at a neighborhood pizza joint and not at a David Burke restaurant. Tuna taco appetizer was delicious and the Scallop and Octopus entree was delicious as well. Fortunately their price point is good so you don’t leave feeling like you’ve been robbed but just let down
A welcome concept in suburban NJ. A dining restaurant that has membership so some faux level of kinship. David Burke is always imaginative and art in presentation and flavors. The service is not up to the level of the kitchen (chef)and while there is no lack of personnel, they are all going in different directions not coordinated to table service. The management cares but that enthusiasm has not flowed down to the wait staff. The ambiance is a winner!
We like the concept David Burke and team created, but at this price level it all needs to be flawless.
We understand that the restaurant is still finding its rhythm. We are confident that once it does, it will be a local gem!
Truly unique. An amazing dining experience. Hesitate to let anyone else know about this hidden gem because its the kind of place that feels personalized and special. Menu and food are the best David Burke has to offer (don't miss dessert). Wine list has great options including some treasures you won't find anywhere else. The atmosphere is like no other you will find - a classic clubhouse beautifully restored to celebrate the rich tradition and history of this amazing tennis club. This is one of the oldest clubs in the country, with one of the most current and exciting dining venues we've stumbled across in years.
