I've been to his other restaurants and was impressed by ambiance, food and service. I have to say Del Mar didn't impress me! Food was good but nothing exceptional, service was average and very pricey.
We had Sunday brunch on our last day of our DC trip. The food was fabulous. Our table of 5 ordered a variety of tapas and shared them allowing everyone to have a sample. The sangria was excellent.
Our server, Raquel, was amazing. She made recommendations according to our feedback and everything was spot on and delicious.
We were celebrating a birthday and they brought out a lemon dessert and a birthday card for her.
I will definitely go back on my future visits.
The Food was really good, the service was amazing and the restaurant is beautiful!
The food was very good, lots of variety for different tastes. However, the wine prices were way too high, even wines by the glass started at $15. Would have enjoyed the food and experience much more with some reasonably prices wines.
Wildly overpriced. Fairly mediocre food. Nothing special...
Del Mar was incredible in helping us celebrate our 1st Anniversary! Thank you for making it extra wonderful!
We love Del Mar. I’ve been 4 times in the last year. We had a 10:30pm reservation. When we arrived we were told they closed at 10:30pm. We said “we have a 10:30pm reservation”. Only because we pushed back did we even get a table. Then our server said “I need to get your food order in, our kitchen closes at 10:30”. But again, our reservation was for 10:30! Disappointed.
This place had an amazing ambiance, however the food and drink prices for the value was extremely disappointing.
We had a wonderful meal for my birthday. Mostly followed the suggestions of our excellent waiter. Was my first visit to the Wharf and I was a bit concerned. Took the Metro which I think is much easier than parking. The squid with black entrée was the best part of the meal. Also I loved the pear cocktail the waiter recommended. Also loved the modern décor. Not to mention the waterfront walk to get there!
Lunch for two began with an excellent pear cocktail for me and followed by 4 tapas and oysters. The tapas were Salmorejo, the grilled romaine with fabulous toppings, shrimp aioli was like none other I've had previousy, peppers stuffed with crabmeat. The latter was gorgeous but alas, nothing special. Everything else was excellent.
The food was delicious - and beautiful! Excellent service. Friendly and helpful service without being obsequious. Our third time there and it’s become probably one of our favorite restaurants in DC!
Our meal at Del Mar was not only the best that I had in Washington D.C., it was the best meal that I have had in years. We made a meal of the tapas, trying eight of them. Our waiter Kelvin made suggestions along the way. The sea urchin was a favorite. The foie gras was exceptional. After eating one, we ordered another. For dessert, enjoyed the churros and almond galeta. It was an exceptional and lovely meal.
Cocktails insane - I was charged $28 for 1 old fashioned cocktail. So beware on ordering drinks of their cocktail menu - I was shocked to see this price on the bill as other cocktails on menu were about half that price. Waiter service was overly time consuming when introducing menu and interrupted our conversation multiple times to tell us more about the food in very extensive narrative. It needs to be tapered back, we were interrupted by staff every 5 min. The tapas were very hit and miss - grilled octopus was partially raw and other tapas seafood was poorly seasoned.
I was treating a colleague to lunch as a thank you for a favor she did for me. I have been to Del Mar several times. She had never been.
The waiter asked about any food allergies and I stressed my allergy - not particular preference - but allergy to zucchini and eggplant. We ordered 5 tapas and he recounted the tapas and my allergies and said they would all be fine.
The food showed up. And the pork belly was on a bed of finely chopped herbs, capers, and other things. It was not until I had 2 bites did I notice the finely diced zucchini. I have been sick for 2 days.
One of the best meals we have had since moving to DC, truly a memorable experience
Awesome simply spectacular
Everything was amazing!
The only thing I would recommend is gluten free options.
Given the rave reviews, I was expecting a great meal; but I found it disappointing. We had the seafood paella with lobster -- and it just wasn't that good. The lobster wasn't sweet, the prawns were on the fishy side and the mussels were dried out. We just got back from a trip to Barcelona, and the paella you can find in every other restaurant there for 1/3 of the price was better. On the positive side, the ambience and service were very good. But at the high prices and the mediocre meal, I couldn't recommend it to others.
Everything was excellent. The service and quality of the food was top notch. We got the jamon iberico, white bean salad and seafood paella. 5-star meal!
We had a nice meal, but a bottle of wine bought as an anniversary gift from a friend arrived late from the sommelier, and our waiter acted like he would have rather been somewhere else.
The food was delicious, the calamari and squid ink paella was one of the best we’ve had. Our server was very helpful and extremely friendly. Highly recommend this place!
For a place that specializes in seafood, I was pretty bummed when our very spendy lobster paella was like chewing a hunk of rubber...and was mentioned to staff, was just nonchalantly passed off as a non issue. Never again.
We thought inside was pretty chilly, so we requested an outside table. The weather was perfect, and the dining space has a garden feel. I marked the noise level as energetic, but that is to be expected in this lively neighborhood. Our Paella was excellent and loaded with seafood. The charred Romaine salad was dressed with roasted figs and almonds. I marked the outstanding box because the food was indeed, outstanding. But also, from the instant we walked in the door, the staff was attentive. There is an attention to detail where the staff sincerely wants the customer to feel special. Our wait staff was exceptional. Never intrusive, but always aware. Management has spent a lot of time on training. If only it were so, everywhere. The menu has so many choices we would like to try. We will return!
Delicious and creatively prepared food, and the tapas-style portions allow you to sample many different options which was perfect for us! The outdoor seating was nice and the services was attentive and engaging.
Food excellent. Waiter was very “scripted”, Repeatedly told us what were his favorites rather than attempting to educate to tables tastes, constantly addresses us as “senoritas” . Oddly thanked us for “trusting him to accept his recommendations” (which we didnt, and not sure why that would be his focus). When I asked another waitstaff about drink recommendations for a dry cocktail preference, I received a very long answer that had no information and basically suggested that all the drinks listed were delicious rather than answering my question which clearly they could not.
Our first trip to the new habor was quite a shock to see the density of residential housing, having thought there would be more shops. The Del Mar did not disappoint. Gorgeous decor, attentive & competent service from Danielle. Creative and tasty dishes, especially the lobster salad. Swordfish was prepared to perfection! Because this was a special birthday lunch, Del Mar provided a delightful thin birthday treat with a candle. Though pricey, it’s worth it!
Service and food was fantastic. We order food all at one time and we barely had time to finish one plat, when the next plate came out. Next time, we will order more slowly.
We had a wonderful time celebrating my Mother’s birthday at Del Mar! I’ve been to Del Mar a few times and I am always impressed by the impeccable food, service and ambiance.
This restaurant has become my new favorite spot to dine in DC, and if the weather is good I would highly recommend sitting on the balcony. The staff was great, and the food was fantastic. Not just the best Spanish food in the area, best food experience overall. Anyone reading this should make a reservation now.
Food and service were amazing! We sat outside on the wharf, which made it even more pleasant. I would highly recommend the paella, best I've ever had. Our waiter was particularly helpful and always nearby if we needed anything. It is a little expensive but well worth it. It was definitely the best meal we had while visiting Washington, DC.
Outstanding, from cocktails to food to service to ambiance. Always a treat to eat here.
Long weekend in Washington staying at the Wharf= Friday evening dinner at Del Mar- exceptional service, fabulous extensive menu and the food was delicious- spoilt for choice
Del Mar is one of the best restaurants in dc and my favorite of all the Fabio Trabbochi restaurants. Authentic Spanish food you feel like you are in Barcelona. Highly recommend the seafood paella, jam on iberico, calamari pelayo and txangurro. One of a kind wine list.
Beautiful space and yummy food. The churros with Nutella were probably the best dessert I’ve ever had at a restaurant! Pricey though. Hard to find a bottle of wine under $100.
Good food and great ambiance on upper outside deck
Del Mar was fantastic. Everything including the food, ambience, and service was 5 star. The restaurant even offered a complimentary dessert and champagne in celebration of our special occasion. I would definitely come back again!
We had a special, 90 year old guest coming to town with her son. We hadn’t seen them in 6 years and wanted to treat them to something special. I’ve eaten at several of the chef’s other restaurants and had seen wonderful reviews of Del Mar. Our experience was even more wonderful than we had hoped. My husband and our friends had one of the paellas and loved it. I had two of the tappas and loved them both. My husband and I are already planning our return visit. One thing we really appreciated was the staff’s willingness to turn down the volume of the music to a level that allowed easier conversation.
The Wharf is a great location for a nice walk and a fine meal. This was our first time to Del Mar although we have been to Fiola Mare for years and have visited Fiola DC and Sfoglina recently. I think that Fabio Trabocchi delivers a superior experience, incredible food and always great wine. Del Mar's menu is full of exciting choices and it was hard to select from all of the ones I wanted. Go and look for your self, regardless which you pick, I'll bet it will be awesome!
The most amazing, attentive staff! The food was delicious and the ambiance delightful. A must try for sure!
