Step into The Den, a classically British, oak-panelled snug at the St Martins Lane hotel, which offers guests a peaceful spot to enjoy afternoon tea, curl up with a book, play a game of backgammon or catch up with friends over a Gin & Tonic. An ideal meeting place in the heart of Covent Garden, The Den’s country club atmosphere is complemented by comfortable leather sofas and warm lighting. A series of surreal and playful art pieces riffed on classic British scenarios also adorn the walls, bringing the room to life with a touch of British
eccentricity.

The Den Terrace: This summer, St Martins Lane is delighted to be opening its doors onto The Den Terrace to bring you a taste of the tropics, in collaboration with Bacardi Añejo Cuatro. The Den has been transformed into a topical oasis, filled to the brim with palm trees and cacti that will spill out onto the terrace, bringing Caribbean glamour to the heart of London’s Covent Garden.

Great ambiance, enough pastries. Unfortunately it took long before the food arrived but they made up to it whith free champagne, so overall very good score.

Went for the Narnia afternoon tea. Staff ignored people as they arrived and left us waiting for ages to be seated, even with a booking. Had to keep asking for things, even water - that was when you could catch a member of staff, as they were largely absent. Food took ages to arrive (nearly an hour), which is ridiculous considering it's a few pre-made cakes and pastries - not sure why it would take so long just to put them on a plate. When we were ready to leave, the waitress shouted at me for apparently using the wrong toilet, even though there were no signs to the toilet we were 'supposed' to be using. I said that no one told us we weren't supposed to use them (we had used them the whole afternoon without anyone saying anything), she shouted at me that we should have asked! Unbelievably rude, not sure where the customer service is. Didn't bother paying service charge, as we didn't receive any service.

Afternoon tea was lovely the only issue I had was the tea wasn’t hot enough and the coffee was only warm, apart from that lovely. Staff were amazing

Lovely cosy atmosphere, great for a winters day, would not be so good for summer however. Afternoon tea was to a high standard, however there was only 3 savouries, the rest was all sweet, would have liked some traditional sandwiches. Also no currents in the scone, which is a preference for me. There was an option to select their special “chronicles of Narnia” afternoon tea whilst booking, but I didn’t, however this is what we were given. Finally the service let them down unfortunately, they seemed to be under staffed as there was just one girl in the end, who was lovely but overstretched.

We booked the Narnia tea. The set up was comfy and nicely done. There was no children’s menu which was a shame and although it was a bit themed (Aslan’s head in caramel was one of the sweet options and there was Turkish delight), it wasn’t totally obvious how the rest related to Narnia. The drinks were all lovely and they were very accommodating with my children’s requests but the food was not particularly fantastic. The scones were enormous but quite dry. We were looked after very well but the food was not quite of the standard I’d expect in a hotel such as this.

We had to wait an hour after ordering for our food even though some of what we ordered, like a charcuterie plate and hummus did not have to be cooked. The wait staff were nice, but they just kept saying food was coming even though it was clear there were problems in the kitchen. They discounted our bill but kept a 15% service charge on for the full amount. Wait staff kept saying the manager would come and talk to us to apologize. The manager never showed up! That was the worst of it. The cowardly manager made the wait staff do all of the apologizing for the kitchen!! We will not go again, and you certainly should not if you are trying to get to a play or are hungry.

Waitress could see less interested in seating us welcoming to the Den. Upon seating we again advised that one of the party had a nut allergy, was frankly told that they did not cater or provide alternative menu options. It was only once we ordered a bottle of champagne that we stated to get any warmth from the waitress. Compared to other afternoon teas which are on offer in London, this has to be by far the worst experience that I have had.

My fourth time there as it's in a great spot pre-theatre, if what you want is somewhere quietish and comfortable to sit down with a drink and a snack. This was the first time it was busy. Service is slow, but charming.

We visited for the Narnia themed afternoon tea. The Den is a lovely, cosy place. The perfect spot to while away a few hours on a rainy day. One of the highlights of our visit was the super warm and friendly service we received from our waiter. I wish we’d got his name he was just awesome. All waiters should be like him! The afternoon tea was delicious too!

The Den is a very cosy space in the hotel. The afternoon tea was great with a good choice of savoury and sweet options. The portions were very generous and we ended up with a doggy bag. Our waitress, Inesa, was very helpful and friendly and provided an excellent service. She even organised a special birthday treat at no extra cost.

The only thing that let them down - 2 paintings were broken and the art should really have been taken down.

The Den has an Afternoon Tea that is way too much food / too rich ( there are 3 savoury items, 5 sweet pastries/cakes and big scone) for just one person so don't over order, get a tea for 2 or even 3 and get extra teas. The quality of the food was excellent even if some items I didn't like but that was my own preference not the preparation.

Not very impressed by the actual food. Not presented well, slightly burned and very flat scones. Good value for the price but not somewhere I'd go again. You could go somewhere far superior for not much more money. Not bad, but a bit disappointing.

6 of us had afternoon tea to celebrate my 40th birthday. I really can't fault it. The Den is quirky and a perfect cool retreat from the raging heatwave outside. The afternoon tea itself was utterly delicious and amazing, in fact there was possibly too much! Serving was great, staff really helpful. I forgot to advise that we had a gluten free diner but they went and prepared her something so quickly, that my friend hardly noticed. We had the prosecco deal and I really don't think it can be beaten for value. Will definitely return, but will probably skip breakfast next time!

The Den does not belong as part of the smart and trendy St Martin’s lane hotel. The Den is below a average on all counts. Poor service, sad menu, dark ‘Den’ just about ok for a December evening.

Rather strange 'concept' hotel, full on a Saturday afternoon with very noisy young people having a good time. The Den itself was a lot quieter and rather dark, but comfortable. The tea was excellent, although it would have been nice to have a wider range of non-herbal teas - the only choice was English Breakfast. A bit heavy on the sweet fancy cakes, but they were all lovely, and beautifully presented. The staff were charming and couldn't be more friendly and helpful.

Horrible! Came here to treat a friend for her birthday. No-one to greet us and show us to our table so we just sat at the “Reserved Table”. Eventually went to the front desk to ask for service. Food horrid and they had no note of “vegetarian option”. English Breakfast tea tasted cheap. Had to keep getting up to find our waitress... Had been before but NEVER again!

The Den is a single medium-size room just off of the large atrium / reception area of the hotel.

You enter by an archway which has no door and obviously therefore leaks sound in from the various groups making their way through reception.

We were seated with my wifes back immediately by that arch. It was cold, noisy and the table was at an awkward level relative to the seats.

Even if we’d have been seated at one of the “nicer” tables beside one of the fake fires, it’d have been an underwhelming experience that fell well short of the sales copy.

The Den is an add-on that brings in extra cash for the main hotel (and it’s such a good hotel, it’s unlikely the staff there don’t realise it doesn’t match the standards of the rest of the hotel itself).

The staff were nice but unable to help (they did offer for us to have the food in the restaurant).

For all I know the food may be amazing. We paid £6 for a few mouthfuls of the sparkling water bottle we’d been bought and moved on.
