Horrible! Came here to treat a friend for her birthday. No-one to greet us and show us to our table so we just sat at the “Reserved Table”. Eventually went to the front desk to ask for service. Food horrid and they had no note of “vegetarian option”. English Breakfast tea tasted cheap. Had to keep getting up to find our waitress... Had been before but NEVER again!
The Den is a single medium-size room just off of the large atrium / reception area of the hotel.
You enter by an archway which has no door and obviously therefore leaks sound in from the various groups making their way through reception.
We were seated with my wifes back immediately by that arch. It was cold, noisy and the table was at an awkward level relative to the seats.
Even if we’d have been seated at one of the “nicer” tables beside one of the fake fires, it’d have been an underwhelming experience that fell well short of the sales copy.
The Den is an add-on that brings in extra cash for the main hotel (and it’s such a good hotel, it’s unlikely the staff there don’t realise it doesn’t match the standards of the rest of the hotel itself).
The staff were nice but unable to help (they did offer for us to have the food in the restaurant).
For all I know the food may be amazing. We paid £6 for a few mouthfuls of the sparkling water bottle we’d been bought and moved on.
The selection of cakes and savoury items for the afternoon tea was incredible. So much that we couldn't finish! But very tasty! Cosy setting with unique decor. The lady who served us was super friendly.
The room was not at all what you might expect on entering the hotel lobby, being more a quirky gentleman's club room than the sparce 'pretentious' foyer would suggest. Just stopped for a drink and snack before the theatre, and it was ideal for that. Service was a little slow, but probably the fault of the establishment rather than the staff! The lady who served us was lovely, suggested we might be fine with one mezze plate rather than the two we were initially going to order, and genuinely seemed keen on making sure we were comfortable. My G&T was perfect, and the mezze plate was home-made and delicious. My only quibble with the place, and the sole reason it doesn't get a 5 star from me, is the music, which, while not too loud exactly, is that electronic noise which is both insistent and irritating - and therefore really not relaxing. A shame, as everything else was super.
A fantastic afternoon tea with excellent service from all staff.
Had a really nice afternoon tea at The Den and it was good value. They accommodated for vegetarians and had lovely tea options. The venue was small but cosy and inviting. The staff were friendly and the service was great, we felt very comfortable.
We went to the Den for afternoon tea while on holiday in London and we are so glad we did. The afternoon tea had a perfect mix of sweet and savory menu items, all of which were full of flavor and delicious. The ambiance was nice and quaint as the Den was tucked away in the corner of the St. Martin’s Hotel. I would definitely recommend this spot if you are looking for an authentic tea time experience.
This was bought for a birthday gift afternoon tea, and she had a wonderful time. The service was mentioned as amazing, especially with the extra birthday cake! The quantity and quality of food was also great. Easy access to theatres and ballet! Thank you
My wife and I visited St Martin’s Den for afternoon tea on her birthday. It’s a small, cosy venue with just a dozen or so tables. Staff friendly, attentive and got the balance just right between giving us time and keeping us fed and watered.
Afternoon tea traditionally consists of savouries and a selection of sweet cakes. The sweet selection was excellent but my only criticism would be that the balance between sweet and savoury was not quite right. Too few savouries for me.
That said we wold visit again so couldn’t have been too bad.
Our visit to the Den was part of a birthday day out to London, pre show booking. The Den is a small area off the entrance lobby of a hotel. As such, it is quite difficult to find as there is no signage to point you in the right direction. After unknowingly, walking past it a few times we had to ring the Den to find out which building it is.
The Den itself is a small room that is tastefully decorated and has modern arts / pictures on the walls, which are quite comical! You'll know what I mean if you go!
The service was good, attentive and helpful. The afternoon tea is good but not spectacular, the choice of sandwiches is fixed and will not be to everyone's tastes. A good selection of teas offered and the sweets are very good with plenty of them!
Overall, a nice place to go for afternoon tea and I would recommend it.
Great place to meet for a drink before heading out for the evening
Swanky and modern den located in a hotel. Food and service was excellent during afternoon tea. Very cleaver portrats line the walls.
conveniently located next to ENO
very nice afternoon tea served by very friendly waitress
however food took almost 40 mins to arrive, tea was cold by then
disturbingly loud music coming in from the lobby
and various personel using the room as interconnecting room to other jobs
interestingly furnished room but try to sit in those deep armchairs and eat from a plate up on a regular height table ...
Lovely surroundings and great service. Wouldn't have known about it if I hadn't of seen it online so a great little find. Lovely afternoon tea.
Had a very nice afternoon tea in the Den. We went because it was close and well priced, we'll go back because it was excellent - both the food and the service
Quaint little find within St Martins Lane hotel. Server was excellent, good took ages so we came back after the theatre to eat it, which was kind of them to accommodate us rather than rush it pre show.
Lovely place for Afternoon tea. Beautiful setting. Atmosphere a little on the dim and dark side but was nice. The cakes were amazing, however there was cake over load and there could have been more a variety of sandwiches produced on the smaller side rather than only 3 sandwiches with no other filling choices and then 7 cakes! Maybe look at having miniature sandwiches with a simple variety and 5 signature cakes rather than 7 very rich cakes. Just seemed ever so sweet. Also the timing of the drinks could have been paced slightly better. We were given Prosseco, water and our teas and coffee all at the same time. Meaning that the coffees and tea went cold very quickly and not leaving us time to drink the prosecco beforehand. Other than that, the setting was lovely and the service was exceptional - service was extremely friendly, pleasant and cheerful.
Our waitress, Melinda was exceptionally friendly and courteous from the start. She offered to put away our rain soaked umbrellas and assured us that they were able to accommodate us earlier than our appointment. She explained every item on the menu in great detail and was attentive to our needs at all times. She made us feel well taken care off. The afternoon tea was lovely, we enjoyed the savoury treats and differences from a classic afternoon tea menu. The brioche and blackberry mouse was exceptional. I loved the tea service. The den was exactly that- a den! It felt cosy, however had the weather permitted we would have preferred to sit outside on the terrace. Overall a lovely afternoon tea made special by our waitress Melinda!
We had a lovely Afternoon Tea at the Den. The Den is nice and cosy with fun quirky artwork and comfortable sofas. It is a small space so doesn't feel crowded at all and is an oasis in the city. Our Australian waitress was super friendly and lovely and very attentive. The afternoon tea was delicious and plentiful and I also loved the Ted Baker tea set. Great value for money and a hidden gem in the world of afternoon teas.
The two servers, Agnes and Janes, were incredibly pleasant and made the experience really positive. The food was delicious, and was really good value for money!
Fantastic service, great choice of food, good value for money. One of the better afternoon teas I have been for in London. Highly recommended.
Amazing Afternoon Tea at the Den, highly recommend
We had the best afternoon tea experience at the Den at St. Martin's lane. We were a crew of six wet Americans with various dietary needs and they acccomdated EVERYTHING (including making 1 full gluten free tea and 1 full vegetarian tea without ANY advance warning). Additionally, while only four of us ordered tea meals, they brought a complementary glass of prosecco to the entire party. We could not have been more impressed (and the food and ambiance were fantastic!).
When we arrived Saturday at St. Martin's Lane hotel with two granddaughters for our Open Table 6:00 pm reservation our gracious waiter stated that afternoon tea ended at 5:00 pm. This was not obvious from the Open Table reservation page. Our server saw our disappointment and he and the kitchen staff produced an amazing tea service. We enjoyed it immensely and carried some sweets home as we could not finish the generous servings.
Excellent venue with extremely tasty afternoon tea food selection. Our waitress was awesome and helped make it all a wonderful experience. Thanks
Fantastic Afternoon tea. Lovely staff and great atmosphere.
We celebrated a birthday with afternoon tea. It was marvellous .
Hope to go back for dinner sometime
A very enjoyable afternoon tea in a tasteful, yet amusing location. The only downside was the noise coming from the hen night preparations passing through the hotel lobby. Other than that, excellent, attentive and courteous service and impeccable food. Doggy bags were necessary for all of us, which is no criticism at all! The option of changing tea was unusual in my experience, but very welcome. Thank you for a wonderful experience.
Had such a good time. Drinks good. Food great. Service exemplary. Would go again and would definitely recommend.
Excellent afternoon tea - service great - venue very imaginative and special. Great secret cocktail bar to visit afterwards!
Nice cosy atmosphere, great service, lovely food and loads of tea. Perfect for a relaxing get together with friends for a special occasion.
Very attentive staff that gave fast and polite service. Afternoon tea was good value as we could get unlimited refills with tea and could have other drinks too. We had free prosecco with our booking too!
Perfect venue for classical concerts. Musicians could dress a bit better but their talent makes up for it.
Afternoon Tea was okay - the tea was good however, the finger sandwiches and some of the desserts tasted stale.
The food was the most disappointing part of afternoon tea. The savouries were tough and lacked flavour. Having checked that my wife was allergic to shellfish, the waiter still delivered a dish containing prawns. He offered to replace it, but the replacement took forever to come. The scone on the sweet platter was dry and stale. The two servers did their best to earn the 15% service charge, but at the end of the meal presented us with a bill containing drinks we had not ordered. They apologised of course for yet another error, but it rounded off a very disappointing end to the special occasion which was my wife's birthday.
We ended up choosing The Den for Afternoon Tea as the more usual suspects were all booked up so close to Christmas. It was such a pleasant surprise how much we enjoyed it seeing as we'd never even heard of it before. It was in a great location - near Longacre - and the room, although small, was lovely. It was quite dark, but atmospheric, and had great quirky art around the walls - I'm sure kids would find it really engaging. The staff were lovely - they explained all about the afternoon tea, and checked if we'd like anything substituted on the menu. Because we'd booked through Open Table we got a complimentary glass of prosecco. I liked the fact that we didn't even have to mention it - the waitress confirmed it immediately we'd sat down. Rather than sandwiches the savoury part of the tea was 3 pastries which were all very tasty. It avoided the usual problem where you fill up on bread before you've even started on the cakes! The cakes were presented beautifully, and a little table was produced to move the teapot and milk onto which was a great idea as we'd have struggled for room otherwise. The cakes and scone were delicious. There was just the right amount of food which meant leaving nicely full rather than completely stuffed. We'd definitely recommend it as it was about half the price (£29.50) of the high-end hotels, but definitely as tasty. Because there was room we were able to stay for longer than our allotted 2 hours which was also a nice touch. We'll definitely be returning.
Great service.Relaxed atmosphere Excellent location, an oasis of calm right in the middle of London.
Afternoon Tea was lovely, staff very helpful & chatty. We was late getting there as we couldnt find it & didnt realise it was inside another building
So much fun for afternoon tea and so much food! Really a great experience overall!
Incredible afternoon tea!
The cakes were wonderful. Probably some of the best cakes I had in an afternoon tea in London.
