Great food. The manager is charming.
Everyone that arrived after us got their order taken first. The time between our starters to our entrees was about 20-35 minutes.
We were never checked up on after receiving our food.
Our water was never refilled, nor were we offered a chance to order a 2nd bottle of wine.
Food was a bit salty but still tasty.
We were seated outdoors and during the middle of our meal, water from a pipe unleashed right behind my foot and poured into the street.
I know there may be issues with staffing due to covid and preparing for opening, but it seemed like we were the only table to experience this as I watched everyone else get checked up on and taken care of .
We have been going here before and through the pandemic. Glad to see they are back open and it is getting busy. Everything is delicious.
Terrific food. Great service.
Perfect outdoor setting for lunch in the sunshine. Food was delicious and service was excellent.
Donato has come out of the lockdown with its fine food and service at their pre-Covid high standard. The chef continues to provide us with inventive versions of classic Italian food. The wait staff is always courteous and attentive. It is great to have indoor dining back.
Today is the second day that California reopened after the COVID19 lock down. It is a festive day, one to be celebrated at a restaurant, any restaurant, with good friends we have not seen in a year. We picked Donato and instead of feeling elated we came away frustrated and disappointed. The waiter, one suspects, would have been grateful to be over the California closure and at least give a hint at being happy. Nothing doing. We arrived at 5 and were seated at our table. Seated, and seated, and seated. Finally, the server arrived as though ready to pick a fight, as though this was the last place he wanted be. Unhelpful with the selection of a wine, he brought what seemed to be an infinitesimal pour in a huge glass. When we pointed out that it look miserly he growled that it was 5 ounces but would check with the manager to see what could be done. That was the last we heard. He was unequally unhelpful with suggestions from the menu and would not budge at a request for a pasta substitute for faro. The food was good but, as other reviewers have noted, hardly filled a quarter of the serving plate. There seems to be something going on at Donato about serving beverages and food in oversized service. Not sure what the point is but it only leads to disappointment. Hubris? Hardly warranted. All this said, it was wonderful to reunite with old friends, all of us crawling out of the horrors of the past year. Want to be with old friends at a place where you feel welcome and want to celebrate something? Find another place.
The food was delicious and we also received great service. Overall we had an excellent experience
Fresh ingredients, imaginative preparations and very Italian feeling in every way.
Always superb food and wine, friendly and efficient service, and ambiance both outside and inside very pleasant! My favorite authentic northern Italian restaurant in the area!
This is the best Italian food we have had since we were in Rome. The menu had many wonderful choices and everything we had was excellent. Can’t wait to go back.
Warm welcome. Authentic Italian cuisine. Nice wine lust.
Really loved this restaurant. Went there for my birthday. I had the Branzino and my husband had the steak. Both were delicious albeit a little on the salty side. Really loved the ambience and service and would definitely return.
Good food. All good, except way too salty! Dessert was yum.
Food was not up to par here. Yes the pandemic probably has many Chefs rusty, but this was a bad experience.
The menu is really interesting and unusual! The food was very good. Waiters were nice. Long wait for the main courses. We had the vasetto and the little pizzas. Love the olive tapenade with the bread. Hazelnut dessert was fabulous!
Excellent food, great bus boy service. Waiter charged me $12 for a salad that I did not order. I did not want the potatoes with the roast chicken and asked if any vegetable could be substituted, whatever extra they had. The waiter says greens, I said okay and they gave me a green salad but did not mention that they were charging me $12 for it. I would have ordered something else.
Great food for every evening. Great staff and service.
disjointed service. food very unprofessional and uninteresting. a huge disappointment. I went here when it first opened and frequented its predecessor in downtown Oakland. Somethng happened. And the pandemic is not to blame.
excellent menu, ingredients, preparation, presentation and service. Will certainly return, and would highly recommend.
As always, we loved being at Donato and bringing family and friends there! It’s the best!’nl
Great food, very fresh. Outstanding service. Large portions even for the appetizers. Will go there again
Family from out of town.
Food was fabulous
Service perfectly fine but the waiter a touch reserved. We walked right by him when we left and he didn’t acknowledge us leaving.
Plates cleared early when others still eating. I know some people prefer this but it feels rushed to me.
This is more feedback than a complaint. Overall, it was great!
Donato is the perfect place for a pre-theater dinner with friends.
Always a treat to go to Donato.
Great service and Great Food. We spent great time for my husband birthday.
Excellent meal on the outside patio. Plenty of seating with umbrellas out front. The waiter was very attentive. I loved the Vasetto (chicken liver mousse) and the Branzino.
So good! The food was delicious, service excellent. This restaurant is a keeper. Will be back!
Incredible food, fabulous experience! This is truly traditional Italian food made with love and served as pure beauty.
Wonderful food! great drinks and awesome service!
Excellent food, glad they have reopened. A good neighborhood restaurant worth supporting.
Excellent al dente pasta with clams, an evening special. It evoked memories of Rome. I hope this makes an appearance on the regular menu. Donato is congenial and authentic.
Wow the pasta was incredible! As was the salumi plate. Fantastic service as well.
Great environment, food and service
Very friendly and helpful staff
Excellent service and delicious food and wine!
Will definitely be back
The outdoor dining at Donato's is great, though the quality of the service was probably a little less successful outside than inside. One of our appetizers was forgotten, but everything was sorted out well in the end.
First time - likely to return. The hostess was excellent - gave us background on restaurant and explained menu. We sat outside on Asbhy Avenue (busy street) but as our table was against the restaurant it was not super noisy. The food was solid - enjoyed my pasta but my partner was luke warm on her fish dish.
What impressed me is the space, menu and energy of the wait staff. We did not drink but the wine menu - all from Italy - has excellent choices. This place has fought to survive during the pandemic and is a good choice for dining in the future.
Very good restaurant! I went there with my girlfriend for her birthday and the food was good, the service was efficient and the waiter was nice! They served us a birthday Panna Cotta with a candle with it which was very cute.
The prices are a bit high for the food served, but comparable with other bay area places.
Superb food, wines & desert. Excellent service.
My only complaint is the noise level. Left with my ears ringing. I believe there are simple things that could be done to the interior to dampen some of the noise. A reduction in noise would make the experience much better. Studies show that people enjoy food much more in a quiet environment.
Good atmosphere, people are friendly. Foods are good!
