Duck & Rice - Sydney
Cantonese cuisine has been described as the pinnacle of Chinese regional fare due to the diversity of ingredients used. The menu at Duck & Rice is an expression of traditional dishes that have been elevated to test the senses of the modern diner. Inspired by the many regions of China, and recipes that have been passed down from generation to generation, the carefully curated menu will be an experience that one will savour with delight!
Please note that if your preferred time at Duck & Rice is not available, we may have availability at our sister venue Babylon, which is right next door and can also be booked on OpenTable!
We had a group of 6 for a birthday dinner and the overall experience was great. The food were nice but a little pricey. The service was great, they looked after us really well. They provided good recommendation for the food as well. The interior and the atmosphere of the restaurant was relaxing which was very nice. And the bonus part was they offered us a free dessert for the group since it was a birthday dinner and which I did not inform them prior to booking. It was a nice gesture which we appreciated! Thank you and I recommend the restaurant for any special occasion.
The service and the location are great. The prawns and pork rice and the pork bao where outstanding. Unfortunately, I expected more of the Pekin Duck as the meat was hard and chewy and the skin soggy.
Great location and ambiance. Staff were friendly too
Second time in a week and the service and food was so much better than the first time. Still a bit of a wait for drinks in the bar however table service was much smoother. Well done!
Great venue, with high expectations. Average food.
The food was quite well flavoured but 3 prawns and 3 prawn heads don't add up to a prawn main course. We sat inside under 2 rows of bright downlights. not flattering and distracting when eating. I asked if they could go down slightly and the waitress was very dismissive saying it was impossible. We had to ask for our winde to be topped up. We wanted this to be our Asian fix in the city but the above has put us off.
The food was excellent, however for the prices of the banquet meal I felt that the serving sizes were quite small.
Fantastic venue and food. Staff was also very efficient and helpful (one offered to take photos of our group when she saw me standing to take one on my phone).
Service was attentive without being intrusive. The timing of dishes served was perfect allowing just the right amount of time between courses. We never felt we were being rushed out for the next booking. I can definitely recommend the duck pancakes and the mud crab in XO sauce was outstanding. We went for my birthday and could not have chosen a better restaurant. It was our first visit but it definitely won't be our last we have found a new favourite Chinese Restaurant in Sydney - move over Mr Wongs.
There weren’t enough staff on. Food took way too long. Service staff didn’t know what was happening. Food quality was average.
Compare this place to any Merivale establishment, difference is there are staff everywhere and they are well trained. The bar at 5pm had 2 staff working and there were 8 people across the bar and 3 and 4 deep. Hopeless.
I am returning this Friday as I had already prebooked and can’t change now. Let’s hope there is some improvement.
Was a little bit concerned by the Allergen advice on the Menu as I am a Coeliac but the waitress was very helpful and I did not go hungry! Bit jealous of the other dishes - can’t lie !!!
The customer service was amazing! Everyone was very friendly to us.
The food was super yummy! I would definitely go back to this place!
I attended the restaurant With my wife and family, it was a table of eight. Before I went to the restaurant I asked my partner had he been there.. He replied yes and said it was ordinary. He was right. There is any number of fantastic Chinese restaurants operating in the Sydney area and we know them all. There were really only two dishes that I enjoyed namely Peking duck and the pork. The service was not great and as I said earlier I would not recommend this to any of our friends which is unfortunate. The setting is very good in that the atmosphere, being open, is excellent but that's about it. I think what you need to do is really up the anti-if you want to survive in the Sydney restaurant market. It's not as though you've adjusted the price to reflect what you're serving. I hope you do as you deserve to make a success of your investment but it's not happening currenntly. Good luck
Hi Paul, I'm sorry to hear of your negative experience. It would be great if you could expand on what it was about the service that warranted a 1 star review, as your feedback is important to us. Please don't hesitate to contact us at the venue. Kind regards
It was a lovely experience and I'll be sure to come again and recommend to friends.
Fabulous food and service. Bringing out fried Icecream with candles and sparklers for my partner’s birthday was a lovely unexpected touch. Highly recommend :)
The ambience and setting is really nice. Food was good too
I think it would have been a much better experience had the area we were sitting in was full, it felt like the restaurant was empty, full inside and empty outside.
Food is the highlight here. Comfortable indoor/outdoor tables.
I went for my fourth time last Saturday night and as usual food and service was first class, I will be going back regularly.
The music is too loud, noise should be lowered to background levels
Hi HudsonS, Thanks for taking the time to review, I'm sorry that the ambience wasn't quite right for your dining experience, we'll discuss with our team and ensure this is fixed for future bookings.
Great food. A little pricey. Noise from live singer a bit irratating
Hi GaryPragnell, Thank you for taking the time to review, we're really happy to hear that you enjoyed the food. We are taking steps to ensure that our neighbours music doesn't impact the dining experience and have since moved our diners inside on Saturdays.
Appalling experience. Had requested a nice table for special occasion, arrived and had to hunt down staff to find our table then were shown to a very basic outdoor table immediately next to a bar with extremely loud music and 3 meters from a live band. When we asked to be moved inside we were told by the manger there were no tables but the band were “about to wrap up”. Asked for sparkling water and received still, requested the signature margarita and were told it wasn’t available, drinks we ordered instead took 20 minutes to arrive. Were asked 3 times in the space of 5 minutes if we were ready to order even though drinks hadn’t even arrived. 5 minutes later it became clear the band was in fact just getting started so we paid for drinks and left. Menu looked amazing but we will never experience it as the service and ambience was atrocious. Be a good restaurant or be a good bar, stop trying to be both.
Hello, Thank you for taking the time to provide us with feedback on your experience. We're sorry to hear that your experience didn't meet expectations and you weren't able to try out our menu. Upon reading your review we've made some changes to way in which we seat our guests on days where we have live entertainment, with the option now eat inside where the volume is much quieter to enjoy an intimate dinner. We really hope to see you again to try out the menu.
Service was great, ambiance was amazing.
We ordered duck, sai pen chicken, bok choi, crab and scallop fried rice and the chef selection of dumplings. The duck, fried rice and dumplings were a 10 out 10 however the chicken and bok choi were a bit of a let down. There was a lot of ginger on the chicken dish which was enjoyable and the bok choi was very bland and the sauce didnt really suit the dish.
Duck and Rice is a beautiful new venue - the food is great. However, one of the pork dumplings we ordered was completely raw. On the upside - the dumplings here are obviously handmade rather than frozen.
Excellent quality food and good service
Amazing food - innovative dumplings - try porcini mushrooms or bug meat, duck, char siu *(roast pork) and MaPo Tofu. Impeccable service ( shoutout to Frederick) elegant decor and ambience
Food was nice, though extremely pricey for what it is. Table service was very slow and forgetful, brought 5 dumplings when 4 was requested, forgot drinks, forgot rice. Lunch took over an hour and the two of us just ordered dumplings, duck and rice, a beer and a coke which cost $97.
If you want duck and rice, head to Haymarket - quicker, cheaper and just as tasty.
The best duck pancakes in town! Great ambience and excellent service.
Undoubtedly one of the best yum cha I have eaten in Sydney!! A must visit for all yum cha lovers!
Watch out Mr Wongs, you've got a new contender in the market. Fabulous food and great service. Well done.
Hi JamesR, Thank you so much for the great review, we're so happy you enjoyed your dining experience! We hope to see you again soon
Loved this restaurant! The duck it amazing! The fried eggplant is to die for! The surprise fried ice cream for my birthday, was a yummy surprise! Can’t wait to go there again!
Very friendly staff who knew the menu well and offered recommendations. Great space and ambience, especially on a warm night. The food was delicious!
Thanks for the great review! We're really happy you enjoyed everything and can't wait to have you back soon.
Delicious Yum Cha with a twist - dumplings were all tasty and well made with a number of options, Crispy Skin Chicken was out of this world amazing. Great wine list and cocktail and mocktail list that needs more visits to try them all.
Someone should have explained to us how the yum cha deal or menu worked. The selections of dim sum was very limited and overpriced
Thoroughly enjoyed, the outside area will be lovely when it’s open. Our duck pancakes, chicken ribs & prawn dish were very tasty. We will be back.
Dumplings full of flavour and well presented, spacious city rooftop views, friendly service, live music. Great place for socialising after work.
We were there on a busy Friday night - even seated inside, the noise level was pretty high. Service was friendly, and adequate. The wine we chose had a cork, which seemed to present a problem - It took ten minutes for the girl to reappear with it! We had empty glasses for a while on two occasions. One of the waitresses was a bit 'spilly', as my friend put it! I somehow managed to score a few drops of wine in my shoe at one stage!
Having said all of that, the meal was lovely, and there are many other things on the menu that I need to return to try.
We had the $50 lunch banquet and food was really tasty and delicious except for the roast/barbecue pork which was quite dry. We are definitely coming back to try the Peking duck and crab and scallop friend rice.
Great service and food. Suitable for 2 people or a large group. One of my fave new places in Sydney.
Absolutely great ambience, especially if you are seated in the terrace.
