Haute Mex - falling short of the mark for anyone who has spent time in Mexico City (some very bland flavors ) and is expensive but our waiter Vladimir (if it had not been for him we would have walked out early) made the occasion.
We were warned by a staff member at the Intercontinental Hotel, who we told we were dining at Ella Canta, to have patience with the service, another staff member told us to go for drinks but "we might like to dine elsewhere". After our experience, I would say they were right to some extent. We found that we were treated correctly by some staff members, such as the maitre, however, our server was overly familiar and relaxed and showed a complete lack of interest trying to resolve an issue we had. The restaurant was really quiet, just another 2 or 3 tables, so there wasn't much atmosphere either. We were a group and ordered various dishes to share, so we tried many of the plates on the menu. Some we liked, some we didn't. Probably wouldn't go back.
Fantastic food and menu. The atmosphere is very special. Everybody was happy. Real Mexican food at its finest.
Good Mexican food is hard to find in London, so I try everything to see what’s tolerable and what’s off my list. There are maybe three places in the city that make me feel that they understand the flavours and combinations of Mexican food. Ella Canta is definitely not a traditional Mexican style, but the flavours are spot on. The Aztec soup had the perfect flavour of a traditional tortilla soup served in a different way. Ceviche was fresh and presented well. The pork carnitas tasted like home with the fresh-pressed corn tortillas. The only meh dish at the table was the chicken. It was just ok and didn’t exhibit the traditional flavours or the other dishes.
Service was good but a bit on the slow side.
Margaritas were a bit small and would do with better presentation as blended rather than no ice.
Overall, I would definitely recommend and will go again. But don’t expect it to look like Baja style, New Mexico style, or have refried beans and rice.
Excelente comida , es lo que esperábamos de la cocina de Martha Ortiz , que orgullo que abriera un restaurante en Londres 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
It is great to have real nouveau cuisine Mexican in Mayfair, ‘in the middle’ of London. The spirit of Mexico City’s Dulce Patria -Ortiz’ restaurant-, is felt since the entrance. Waiters are as nice as in Mexico City, the menu is incredible, the food, delicious!!!
Excellent Sunday brunch with great food and limitless cocktails. The service was excellent.
Outstanding food and service. Husband is Mexican and I lived there for many years and this is hands down the most authentic Mexican food we have eaten in the UK exquisitely prepared. Not cheap but absolutely worth it for a special occasion. We had brunch with our limited margaritas which were unbelievably good. Lunch menu looks pretty accessible and we will definitely be going again.
Excellent drinks, authentic and delicious food and creative cocktails
Food and cocktails looked amazing but lacked citrus
An incredible evening with a delightful ambience. Thank you to the chef Martha Ortiz for being so wonderful when she met us and the amazing friendly staff and manager at Ella Canta for a fabulous meal, experience and a slice of beautiful Mexico in London! Hugely inspired by Frida Kahlo too which made me love it even more! I shall return or visit the restaurant in Mexico City!
it’s good food and worth a visit , been twice now but there are other mexican restaurants i prefer
probably my expectations were too high as was expecting it to be close to the level of cosme new york
Expensive but worth going! Amazing food, service very friendly and very good. I will go back.
Excellent food and really friendly staff. Even had a mariachi band for valentines!
Had to wait 50 minutes for our pre-booked table and we weren't offered a drink or apology.
Our waitress was lovely but the sommelier when asked for wine recommendations would start at the £100+ bottles which we found odd, there was a heavy push to sell.
In general the food was ok, and the restaurant had great ambience.
Very warm and friendly staff. Loved the food I will defiantly be back
Great service, loved the decor and the food was outstanding. Fun, vibrant, delicious. We will definitely be back when menus update. Manuel was a fabulous waiter and looked after us perfectly.
We arrived with a group of six people for brunch and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Very attentive staff, amazing Mexican food and very good margaritas. The venue has a nice feel to it as well. Our friend with lactose intolerance was served some alternatives that looked almost better than the regular fair. The waiter always made sure we had everything we needed and looked after us well. Can 100% recommend it.
Went for the lunch set menu, left hungry and had to stop for sandwiches afterwards. Still cost over £100 with cocktails, which were disgusting. The food looked pretty, with beautiful colours, but that didn't compensate for the lack of flavour and tiny portions. The room is bleak and has no redeeming features and service was poor. Won't be returning.
We visited for my husband's 30th birthday and had a brilliant evening. The wait staff were really attentive and knowledgeable on the menu and more than happy to answer questions on the food. The food was phenomenal - hands down the best Mexican food we have ever eaten. Very authentic and exciting! Would certainly visit again and recommend.
Amazing as we loved the service and food. So much so that, we are going again soon!
Great last dinner for our London weekend. Restaurant was beautiful and the staff was amazing. Everybody was very professional and super friendly. Glasses were never empty from water (or other drinks). The food was really good, but with interesting combinations I've never tasted before. It really shows that Mexican food is more than Tex-Mex tacos and burritos. The guacamole was a great starter and the chocolate/corn cake was devine! A little bit more expensive that our regular dinner out, but wortih it, mostly because of the staff and the atmosphere they set. Would deffinetly recommend this restaurant for special occasions, or for a more fancy dinner out.
Great food, great margaritas, great service. We hope to come back soon and have Vladimir as our host again. Loved it!
Great restaurant from a great and authentic Mexican chef!!! The food is as good as it can be!!! I think this is the best Mexican restaurant I have tried in Europe.
We had weekend brunch. The food was copious and absolutely stunning - at last London has somewhere that serves authentic modern Mexican food - innovative and beautiful. Margaritas were delicious and service was perfect. Highly recommended!
HIgh end creative Mexican Brunch with "unlimited" margaritas in a 90 min window. They begin with 6 starters and then a main and dessert. Way more food than we needed. I would suggest they do a lower cost option for those with smaller appetites. Great room - glad it wasn't crowded.
Great service, excellent food, really enjoyed my dinner
Ella Canta is a wonderful addition to the London Restaurant scene! The Food is REAL Mexican but to an elevated level. Please don't make the mistake of equating this to Tex Mex burritos and tacos. This is very sophisticated food done to perfection. If you like Latin American restaurants like Coya, you will LOVE Ella Canta. The drinks are creative and delicious! The ambiance created by everything from the staff clothing to the creative barware and table ware add to the whole experience. I will be coming back again regularly!
The service is impeccable. Staff are lovely and knowledgable. The food wowed us our first visit but disappointed us on our second trip. The recipes are amazing but it fell short this second visit. The octopus was flavourless and tough, the tamale was slightly cold and nothing special.
The cocktails are nothing short of incredible.
Great starter, great prehispanic chocolate, tasty pulled pork, dessert just ok.
The dj was not up to 5 star hotel, it ruined the night. Unimaginative music choice, too loud (it is still a restaurant not a disco), some very bad tunes (rap songs in a restaurant, really?) and no sense of the pulse of the night. Most customers were uncomfortable but he didn’t notice or care.
Service ok, but I was expecting better.
They forgot my request of putting a Happy Birthday Message on the dessert
Horrible food and service. It’s nothing like her restaurant Dulce Patria in Mexico City. The food was over seasoned. The drinks finally arrived after the main course was served.
We found out about Ella Canta searching for top new restaurants in 2017. Made a reservation and surprisingly noticed the restaurant was located in our hotel. Convenient but not fond of hotel restaurants in general. We were seated at a very odd table, not conducive for conversation amongst three people. We opted to change tables but were made to wait 40 minutes for a table I was finishing their dessert. We were informed that another table of the same layout was reserved for a very special client . Orange or client special? Once we sat down, I asked about a booth that still seemed vacant. I was informed that the booth did not have a reservation we did not ask for that kind of table. That was disturbing. The service was outstanding, the food was good enough but not as spectacular as the price commands.
Quite possibly the best restaurant I have ever been to, food was excellent, incredible presentation and a genuine concern for customer satisfaction from the informative and friendly staff. Would 110% recommend to a friend
Ella Canta is a special place for food and has a terrific cocktail offering. I must go in the evening as at lunch it just lacks a bit of atmosphere but not due to the service which is a bit laid back but charming and in keeping with the overall feel of the place. Mexican food as you have not experienced it ever before.
The food quality has diminished since its opening.
The service continues to be very good.
Nice decor and ambience however very limited vegetarian options and sadly the vegetarian food I sampled was mediocre. Cocktail menu was extensive and very good
A great restaurant, combines a mixture of; good original food, great atmosphere and service.
Will come back.
If you like sitting next to a DJ whilst eating, being ignored by the staff, unable to chat to your fellow diners and being served less then mediocre "Mexican" food then this is the restaurant for you. The dishes presented were ill defined, generally unseasoned and missed the complexity of flavours expected from high quality Mexican cooking. I just hope Ortiz wasn't in the kitchen that evening as I would hate to think this was in anyway acceptable or intended for Ella Canta. Ella Canta, more like Ella No Canta!
Could do with branching out the menu slightly. The sauce with the beef was really not good. The other mains were average. Starters were better. Fun cocktails but not the best. Was expecting more. Strange gimmicks too. On the positive side guac and ceviche were really delish, but then guac isn't too difficult.
