We enjoyed 'Forage & Chatter' for its relaxed ambience - which enables a one on one intimacy - whether for a date, or for a discreet business meeting. The food was imaginative, tasty & beautifully served. Being GF, I was particularly impressed by the chef's delicious caraway seeded bread + pesto - made specially for me. Likewise my 'GF Surprise' dessert. The surprising this is, how rare that is!
The restaurant is well appointed and easy to find close to the center of town and close to a taxi rank.
The staff were all really friendly, funny and made sure with each party of anyone had dietary requirements which is amazing (I have a fish allergy).
The food tasted great I had pig cheeks followed by gnocchi - the starter tasted amazing but could have done with some bread, the gnocchi was homemade and tasted great (fab veggie dish) but there just wasn’t enough with only three gnocchi - I could have done with double for a main course it was lots of a starter portion.
Overall the forage and chatter was great but we left hungry and headed out for pudding to fill us up.
I was very impressed with Forage and Chatter. I hope to go again soon.
Food was delicious but very long wait for our mains. 1 of our group ( elderly) didn’t order a starter ( though we did have the tasty fried bread balls with pesto dip/ spread) so essentially waited more than an hour for any food. No apology given for the long wait. New Zealand waitress was excellent - polite, helpful but unobtrusive. When the mains did arrive we then waited about 8-10 minutes for our ‘sides’ by which time we had essentially eaten our (small) mains ( otherwise the mains would have been completely cold). I did ask where the sides where after 5 minutes of not arriving and was told that they were ‘coming’ ( again no apology). We had ordered two portions of potatoes and two of broccoli but only one of each arrived. As we had finished our mains by the time the side dishes arrived ( no apology for delay) there was no point asking why we had been just given 1 portion of each dish ( when we ordered two) for 4 people.
Overall, excellent food. Very good waitress. Some timing / service issues. Not cheap. Very nice meal. Would I eat there again - probably? The food was extremely tasty ( though portions quite small) and the ambience very nice and unpretentious. Just a few minor niggles which should be easy enough to sort out.
The food and wine were excellent. Innovative menu with high quality ingredients. The overall dining experience was enhanced by the pleasant ambience and personal, well paced service. Loved the booths so that you felt it was a private experience rather than being packed in with other diners. Lovely staff. A first class restaurant.
catered amazingly for the coeliac in the group, the food, service and ambience were really lovely 10/10
Great meal again. Introduced mum to F&C this trip and she is definitely wanting to return.
Delicious food & wine.very friendly and helpful staff
We booked the Forage and Chatter for a business/client lunch. Great little find it was. Lovely atmosphere and décor. Really liked that it had the feel of a back garden/windows being open but that it was covered over. The food was outstanding. Highly recommended.
An excellent meal, very reasonable price and very good service. Would recommend highly.
Absolutely amazing food and a very relaxed atmosphere. It felt special without being too stuffy. What a great place for celebrating my husbands birthday.
Staff very welcoming and efficient. Enjoyed the food. Only improvement would be softer (or no) background music. Found this a bit intrusive. There are several different areas in Forage & Chatter. Perhaps they could offer one quiet area to clients who have sensory problems and cannot cope with background music?
Even though this is a critical review I do recommend you try this restaurant. So much was really good (excellent starters, partners main, the desert) but there was one big problem, my main course.
I usually order meat or fish when eating out but I do like veggie/vegan food also. The menu had a good choice but when I saw a dish which simply stated 'barley, cauliflower, hazelnuts' I was intrigued. I assumed that the chef was going to use these basic ingredients in various ways to create a great dish. Maybe roasting the cauliflower in garlic and spice, making a hazelnut puree and cauliflower sauce to go with the barley. But no, I was served a layer of barley on top of which sat 3 hazelnuts and four pieces of broccoli. No sauces, no linking of the ingredients in any way and a required cooking skill of zero. A small child could have dished this up after their first cooking lesson.
You may have noted that I got broccoli instead of cauliflower. When I questioned this I was told that the cauliflower was off so they decided to give me broccoli. They seemed not realise that this is a completely different taste and not what was on the menu. Its the same as if I had ordered lamb but they had served me chicken!. There seemed to be no consideration that this would matter. Well it does matter when it is one of the main ingredients!
Overall this was the worst plate of food I can remember ever having in a restaurant. And when you consider that the ingredients could not have cost more than 50p and yet they charged £15 for it, I think this low score review is justified. Why bother putting veggie dishes on the menu if you do not have the skill to cook them?
To be fair, I was offered to have the dish changed for something else but as my partner had nearly finished by the time this happened I declined. We did get some free drinks and the dish was taken off the bill but when your meal has been spoiled these things though well met, do not matter.
I booked based on the good reviews and we had a superb meal - the staff were very attentive and we were treated to complimentary glass of presecco as this was our anniversary celebration. The food was very good, my started of Crab Bisque especially so. would recommend!
All round excellence. Great staff, lovely fresh food, warm ambience.
What an amazing find! Lovely restaurant, with great service. They’ve really managed to get the right balance between casual dinning and great food. Fantastic for a special occassion.
Unbelievable overall experience! Great culinary effort combined with outstanding service!
Amazing food, lovely staff. Can’t recommend this place highly enough.
Excellent food and great service. Cocktail made to order was great and the food itself was delicious and well worth the price. Would definitely recommend and return in the future.
Delicious food in a lovely atmosphere will definitely come back
We booked this for lunch/tea and it did not disappoint the service from start to finish was excellent although it wasn't very busy and by the time we had finished we were the only one's in the whole place. The food was outstanding albeit towards the expensive side although choosing from the set menu would reduce the cost but we wanted 3 courses with prosecco to start and wine with our meal so came in at over a hundred pound which was OK for us . Forage and chatter was clean ,well kept and that was all way the through the restaraunt I would go again and they will see me again soon
Excellent all round. The only downside was a very load American girl who dominated the whole room. This was not the fault of the staff who apologised and supplied free desert wine.
A slight hiccup with the timing of the veg arrival was met with another apology and no charge.
I would go again at the drop of a hat.
We were very pleased to find this restaurant and looked forward to a cozy dinner. Things were off to a good start with tasty starters. Unfortunately the kitchen must have had issues subsequently as our dinner took a very long time to arrive. The deer was quite rare despite being ordered medium rare but the monk fish on lentils was very good, although the lentils could have been cooked a little more and had more flavour. We were offered a free glass of desert wine as gesture for our food being delayed which was enjoyable. In the end this ended up being a pricey dinner that did not go quite right.
Seeing our daughter who now lives in Edinburgh was the special occasion, and it was certainly special food, service and ambience. The food was novel, tasty and in about the right portion size. I loved my winter salad starter which had so many different ingredients I can't remember what they all were, but didn't fill me up before my Red Deer main course. I appreciated the blast of warm air on entering the Ladies, as most places have freezing toilets. Side dishes need to be ordered with the mains, and each side dish was enough for 2 people. We ate it all up and left clean plates - what greater compliment can we pay the chef?
Fantastic food and service, the attention to detail was as outstanding as the food and exceptionally friendly staff.
We visited for our anniversary. Not only was the food excellent but the staff went above and beyond to accommodate us on our special occasion.
Loved the atmosphere in the place and the knowledge , and relaxed manner of the staff. the food was very tasty. A most enjoyable experience
Good food, great ambiance and excellent service. A great find in the centr I'd Edinburgh I will be back.
Reading through trip advisor reviews it was a no brainer really.
We were greeted with such a warm welcome on an Icy blowy Thursday evening. Every member of staff we passed wished us a good evening... Just Lovely!
The food throughout was well prepared and very tasty.
The staff were very attentive and asked for feedback when my wife didn’t finish her starter. It wasn’t to her taste and the texture unexpected. The feedback was well received and the dish taken from our bill.
Everything else was fantastic... scallops, deer, steak, cheese... Couldn’t fault anything.
I really wish I’d gotten the name of the guy who served us. He was very attentive, courteous and passionate about the food and wine. He even recommended a few places for me to go for a wee dram locally and offered to walk us over.
All in all a pleasant evening and culinary experience.
Beautiful food, fantastic service and a lovely warming ambience!
Excellent food and service from all the staff. Forage and Chatter exceeded our expectations.
Everything about this place was perfect. The food, the atmosphere, the drinks, even the lighting.
The service was on a completely different level. Highly attentive without the feeling of being a nuisance to your evening. Very well presented and very friendly. It was apparent that there were many repeat customers due to the rapport between staff and other customers.
Edinburgh is one of my favourite cities, and now this is one of my favourite restaurants.
Try the red deer, it is to die for!
This is the second time that we have been here and its been amazing both times. A lovely menu with loads of different options that makes it difficult to choose. They also have very friendly staff and the atmosphere is brilliant.
This is a wonderful restaurant serving exceptional creative food by staff who are genuinely welcoming and friendly.
Definitely worth a visit.
Fabulous service and wonderful, tasty food. Portion sizes perfect in order to eat three courses and feel satisfied. Definitely made the visit to Edinburgh worthwhile.
First time at this restaurant and I went because I heard it was good and I was not disappointed it was excellent and I will definitely be back
Just brilliant! Food and service fantastic. Would highly recommend
Great place. Great food
A great birthday lunch out with interesting, tasty dishes and good value. Very accommodating too, as there were some confusing changes of numbers of diners! Definitely recommend it!
We had a beautiful meal here. The food was interesting and all the staff had great knowledge about how the food was prepared and the ingredients used. We will definitely be coming back
