Founding Farmers - DC
While our restaurant is supplied by hundreds of family farms everywhere, that doesn’t mean we know every farm, and that doesn’t mean we never have to buy product from the traditional (corporate) supply chain, but it does mean we’re working hard to direct our purchasing dollars where it aligns with our values.
We’re serving the best food we can, made from scratch in our kitchens every day. Our innovative, American dishes are made primarily with pure ingredients honoring the farmers and their hard-earned bounty.
The restaurant is upscale casual, which welcomes business casual dress, and dress that would be appropriate in a nice restaurant; this includes jeans and athletic wear, and warm-weather clothing, including shorts.
Very nice restaurant. Would go back and would recommend. Very cool atmosphere and service was great. Friendly and fairly quick. Brisk business and some of the seating was slightly awkward as getting up meant moving into the aisle where the waiters are trying to get by with huge plates of food. Food was delicious.
In from out of town. Super busy for lunch, we didn’t wait but dinner crowd was fairly light
Fun hip vibe. Great food
Amazing service and delicious food. Expansive menu offered options for everyone to enjoy.
Popped in for dinner, was recommended this place by a local, and I would recommend it too. Good service and good food, not a complaint to be made.
Make sure you get a reservation in advance, there was a huge queue when we arrived at 8pm on a Sunday!
Absolutely delicious food- especially the IMPOSSIBLE burger, the best tasting plant-based burger I’ve ever had and I’ve been vegetarian for 16 years! We were in DC for 4 days and came here 3 of those days - we highly recommend it!
Too noisy ambience. Climatization went from too cold to too warm.
Mistake in the dishes choosen (even if only 2 people). Regular cooking but too expensive for an ordinary meal. By the way, corvina is not an exotic fish.
Everyone’s food was great except my lobster Mac & cheese just wasn’t my favorite. It was the most expensive item we bought and probably the least impressive. The strawberry ice cream was the best I’ve ever had!
Class act !!
An absolute must. Our server (Don) was informative and the food outstanding.
Food was good. The décor was trendy. The place was packed.
I’ve been to Founding Farmers several times and the experience has been good every time.
We had a reservation for 2:15 on a Sunday. We got there about 10 min before with our party of 3 and the restaurant was running behind on reservations. We waited a half an hour past our reservation time before we were seated. I think that process needs to be fixed. Our server was very pleasant, but forgot part of the order (we weren't charged for it). Drinks took a while to come out as well. The food was pretty good for the price.
Don't expect to be seated at your reservation time. We had to wait an additional 30 minutes, and some people had been waiting for over an hour even though they had a reservation. Food was okay, got the breakfast chicken and waffles. Waffles were overcooked, chicken portion was small.
It was St Patrick's Day, the lobby was mobbed, and they were more than a 40 minutes overdue on our reservation, so we left and didn't eat there. The Indian place across the street was amazing.
Open Table needs an option for "Vendor didn't honor reservation," because the only way to get to comments is with a rating, and my rating is just an arbitrary "3" to get to the comments area.
We got seated an hour after our reservation. We were told they were only 15 minutes behind and then continuously being told different things. The hosting staff lacked consistency and order.
45 min wait after my scheduled reservation time. Food mediocre.
Founding Farmers needs to figure out how to deal with its popularity. Once that happens, I'll be back. I love the food at Founding Farmers and I'm on board with its entire farm-to-fork focus. But the sad thing is the restaurant seems to be a victim of its own success. After waiting for an hour, even with a reservation, I decided that it's not worth it. Even once you're seated the wait staff is so overworked it's impossible to get good service. This is not the wait staff's fault, the place is just way too busy. This may just be me but I'd rather go to a place that is close in quality but much less popular. I probably won't go back for a while, if at all.
Founding Farmers for brunch is a must try. Breakfast options are diverse and high quality. Spirits are fresh and creative — all juices are made in house. My friend and I ordered crab eggs Benedict, bourbon French toast and hangover hash along with four different cocktails (I ordered the 'All the Way Up' we were sat at 12:50 PM. The entranceway / foyer was a fire hazard. It was so packed that it was difficult to even find the host. We waited outside for our table, because it was too chaotic inside, which made me think—what would we have done if it was actually cold out? For one of DC’s best brunch spots, the lack of crowd control and mass overbooking was shocking; it’s like they were surprised that their restaurant was packed at noon on a Sunday! Regardless, the food / spirits were so outstanding that I’ll be back. I believe in second chances so I hope next time my experience will be improved!
My server Dajuan is AWESOME!!!!!! I had him both times and I am hoping to have him for a third when I go back on this Sunday.
We have tried to go to this place serval times. Always very busy. We have eaten at Farmers and Distillers many times and love it. I was disappointed. Here are my main points:
1. We have a reservation at 1215 for a party of 6. We were seated 25 mins late.
2. Couldn’t even stand inside due to the huge number of people waiting.
3. We ordered 4 standard breakfasts - eggs, bacon, hash browns and toast. They were all fine but how hard is that!?
4. I ordered the crab cake Benedict. It was not like anything I have ever had - which is normally a crab cake with poached egg etc. this was a little bit of crab cake on an English muffin. It had clearly been sitting under the heat lamp for 10-15 mins. Egg was hard and sauce had dried out. I always say that of a restaurant cannot perfectly peach an egg, they should close their doors.
5. The fifth order was a perfect eggs benedict but came out 10 mins after everyone else had their food. Probably perfect as it was freshly made.
6. In addition to forgetting a meal, he also forgot a side order. He was super friendly and charming but not terribly good at his job.
If I’m going to wait - even with reservations - it better be really good. This was not. I may try it again for lunch or dinner because the location works well for me but my first foray was disappointing.
Arrived at 11am, reservation at 11:15am and not seated until 12pm. An hour of standing in a crowded, noisy entry way with no update/estimation on when we’d be seated.
Love this place. In recent visits they seem to have over-booked their reservations. We waited 45 minutes past our reservation time.
The food was great and a good location for a party of 8. I would highly recommend a reservation. It’s crowded pretty early.
Fun place for breakfast with nice people and great food! Looking forward to going back.
Excellent food, great ambiance! Very fun brunch place!
Our table seated seated 5. Typical meal choices but diverse - rotisserie chicken, Chicken and waffles, chicken nuggets, friend chicken salad and enchilada and chicken. With rotisserie chicken, I must say I loved the pesto sauce - to die for. Overall, everyone enjoyed their meals. Meals are always lightly seasoned (public consumption) so I think theirs sauces on the side real help make the meals a true touchdown.
Birthday awesome job
Excellent experience overall! We had a reservation and walked inside to a crowd of people waiting for a seat. We were led to our table within five minutes and our server was attentive and gave great recommendations. The place is clearly popular, and the noise level and amount of seating reflected that. The food was delicious, and the atmosphere was fun and lively!
Excellent food. Great service. The Beignets were amazing
The food was just okay overall. The gnocchi was great but not piping hot. My husband got the chicken and waffles. The waffles were not even room temperature and the maple syrup was basically colored water. His green beans had no flavor at all. The tables were so close together they had to move the table just so I could sit down and I am very petite. The entire restaurant was so loud you couldn’t even carry on a conversation. I wasn’t even an arm’s length from either table on both sides of me.
Very good food, service and staff excellent. Great area and easy to find. Manager seemed uptight. Will go dine again. Definitely recommend.
We like this place. Really good food at a reasonable price and a fun atmosphere
The wait was over an hour and then we were crammed between two tables barely being able to move. The noise level was so high we couldn't hear each other speak. The service was ok, but the food was not. Their tea is disgusting and the water tastes like tap water from a water hose. I would not recommend going to this restaurant.
our waitresses was awesome, she gave us the best service, but the rest of the waitress were by our table chatting, making jokes, some of them using bad words and the thing is that when you think about a family restaurant for weekends you don't spec that.
by accident they spill my beverage on me and they didn't care about it, they didn't take care of it.
I think it wasn't our day
the table assigned to us is not the best one to take, first round table at the second floor
Food was amazing, waitress was amazing! This location as always crowded though. I would like them to create a bigger, PROPER waiting area for guests. And also i feel like people with reservations that come on time or before time shouldn’t have to wait 30 minutes to an hour to be seated. At that point it’s like why even make a reservation if you are going to have me wait so long to be seated. They need to get better with time management and have seats already being prepped for people coming in with reservations. We shouldn’t have to wait no longer than 5-10 mins to be seated WITH a reservation, especially when i traveled 3 hours just to eat there. Other than that the atmosphere was nice, the food & drinks were amazing and our Waitress Judy was gracious.
I’ve visited the Tyson’s Founding Farmers and looked forward to dining at the DC eatery. I was very disappointed. Despite arriving on time for our reservation, we waited over 1/2 hour to be seated. When I questioned the host staff, I was told the party at our table had “overstayed” their welcome. I had to ask the host staff to make up another table for our party of six. The hostess had to check with the seating coordinator to get permission to set up a table for us. We were told we would receive free appetizers as an apology. When we were finally seated, at three two person tables pushed together in lieu of the round top table I had reserved, the waitress was kind but obviously trying to rush us through our ordering process. When two of our party had special requests for their orders, my daughter wanted blue cheese on the Impossible Burger, my son wanted a baked yam instead of fries with his sandwich, the waitress said she couldn’t guarantee the kitchen would get the order correct because “they are slammed today”. In fact the orders did not come as requested. The signature Mule cocktail was very weak despite the $12.00 price. The food was so so. The service made me feel rushed to eat and leave. Our waitress went so far as to clear our water glasses and water bottles off of the table before we had received our check! And we were charged for the appetizers we had been promised would be on the house. A very disappointing dining experience with food not much better than Ted’s Montana Grill. I would not recommend this restaurant. Drive to Tyson’s if you want to enjoy Founding Farmers.
Even though we had a reservation, we still had to wait about 15-20 mins to be sat. There was no place to wait as it was packed by the entrance and waiting area.
Food was great and the service was good. However, the wait and the front of house was a complete disaster. It was in chaos and the hosts were so disorganized.
Wonderfully food but having a reservation only changes how long you have to wait so say you have a 1:15 pm reservation you’ll still wait for 30-45 minutes prior to being seated compared to just showing up and waiting a hour 🙄. On top of that the waiters are either non-attentive or wonderful and mine was the latter. Food was great though.
