Scott Hallsworth was head chef of Nobu in Park Lane, London for six years. He opened Nobu Melbourne in his native Australia before returning to London to create Kurobuta, the Japanese Izakaya.
Freak Scene is Scott's new restaurant. We hope you like it.
Great food, great atmosphere. I’m a sucker for Asian food and Scott the chef director looked after us amazingly well. Get the pork belly wrapped in lettuce!
Great food. Great atmosphere. Fantastic staff - can’t recommend enough!
Great food, super service. Had a lovely time and would recommend to anyone wanting to dine around Soho
*Owner/Chef incredibly rude - called us uncultured and 'cun7s' multiple times for sending back raw bird dish*
We sent back the quail the first time because it was raw (not rare) which was met by the chef calling across the restaurant to us that we were 'uncultured' as Quail is served rare. If the dish was going to be rare then the menu didnt say so and as mentioned the Quail was raw (blood still there).
He then begrudingly cooked a new bird that arrived equally raw, not rare. Sending it back a second time was met with multiple swear words from the chef. This culminated in the Owner come Chef resolving the situation by repeating 'call me a cun7 then leave' when all we asked was that it was taken of the bill.
Food was nice, but very expensive for what you're getting, especially given it's really casual and 'fast' food
Great food and vibes, Scott and his team create the right atmosphere for a night out, and love that it turns into a bar after kitchen hours. Had a great time and will return.
High quality casual pan Asian food.
Food was fantastic and the staff were great & friendly. Would definitely recommend for great food experience.
Great food, atmosphere and music
Barman was super friendly! Sashimi pizza is a must as well as the nasu dengaku!
Really good food, nice atmosphere, good service and great value for money
Genuinely novel and exciting asian cuisine, well thought-out flavour combinations, not just fusion for the sake of it. Bit disappointed there was no draft beer available (problem with taps, and selection a little limited anyway), but a nice choice of Sakes and quality backing soundtrack (including underappreciated Aussie legends The Triffids) made up for it. Prompt and friendly service.
Place has completely changed. I assume it’s closing shortly as no wine, a lot of the menu missing and ingredients terrible eg crab wontons stuffed with brown crab and avocado. Don’t go.
It is not a restaurant with tables to sit , it is more a fast food Restaurant to sit around the bar.
Food is ok but small portions and expensive.
Freak Scene is indeed a 'scene', offering fast paced service, great tunes, a lively open kitchen environment, and most importantly, delicious innovative food. I had the sashimi pizza and a new roast pork and prawn salad that was one of the best balanced dishes of my life.
We arrived promptly for a pre-theatre meal. The time slot of one and a half hours sounded strict so we were early and got there at 5. Thank goodness we did. Just about managed to get out by 7. The staff are just lovely here but it all felt a bit chaotic with several missing items on the food and drinks menu and dishes took quite a while to come. We could see the lovely chef working like a crazy man in the distance. Maybe someone hadn’t turned up. Having said that, we asked for the house chips and jalapeño sauce to start and were told they didn’t have any and that it was a 2 hour preparation time! We were dumbfounded....even more so when I later found I’d been charged for them but I think that was just an honest mistake. However this was a Saturday night in Soho! Some forward planning was necessary here. If this all sounds negative I have absolutely nothing bad to say about Freakscene. The staff are so charming and the food is marvellous. Best things to try are: pickles, curried duck buns, whole cabbage with miso, chilli crab wonton bombs, slow braised ribs, aubergine & walnuts although I think the menu evolves and changes and everything we saw looked good. The portions are not big (apart from the cabbage) so get plenty of rice as a filler. Drinks are lovely although nothing’s cheap. Despite all these observations we had an excellent evening and we will be back!
Delicious food. Bar eating venue with eclectic Asian themes. Bar stool style seating as opposed to traditional restaurant seating. Got to see chefs prepare the food and engage in banter if you want. Will defo come again. Chatted to owners - v cool people with pride and sense of humour !
Delicious food, really something special, combined with energetic music, friendly staff, and a very 'cool' bar dining experience. Really highly recommended.
I found out about this place about 2 months ago and already been there 3 times. I tried almost everything on the menu and loved everything, including the grilled cabbage even if I am usually not a fan. Service is good and everyone always have a big smile on their face.
Really surprised to find it half empty at 8pm on a Saturday. An undiscovered gem of soho perhaps??
After a website making a fuss about how long you could stay I expected a buzz of some kind. However, I was the only person in the place for at least half an hour when another solo diner turned up. Luckily the food was very good. Australian chef perhaps. Uncomfortable ‘perched’ seating on a high stool (no back) will get you out of there fast. That’s the idea, right.
Freak Scene was amazing - from the friendly service to the INCREDIBLE food. I kept telling the staff (we were on sat on the counter watching the chef's at work) how great the food was. I went for the chicken-fried chicken and was blown away. Highly recommended - go now!
Really clever, beautifully presented food, in a relax atmosphere. Knowledgeable, friendly staff and great service.
Friendly staff but over worked, trying their best. Resulted in slower than preferred service. Food ok. Enjoyable casual dining experience.
Soooooo delish as always! Love the new menu items. Thai mackerel was en pointe.
Delicious food and we enjoyed watching the chefs prepare it. It’s a casual counter top only set up, so good for 2 but not so much for larger groups.
Will definitely return.
Great food, crab wontons & duck curry both fantastic.
Second time I go there and every time I end up leaving super happy and super full. Amazing food, great atmosphere and nice deco.
Service is a bit slow, but not enough to change my review.
Food was so good, we proposed to the chef (he politely declined). Highly recommend this place. Great for a Friday night catch up with friends.
Simply outstanding- every dish was the most delicious assault on the taste buds and each was very different. I'm not a fan of chunky chips, but these were crispy, creamy and potato tasting served with a great yuzi dip. The aubergines melted in the mouth, as did the scallops. The chicken and the pork belly were crispy skinned and the meat was succulent. We were persuaded to try the cabbage (not a likely success- we both went to public schools), but it was stunning and we polished it off with undue haste. With each of the dishes there was wonderful sauce/jus/dip, etc that perfectly complemented the main ingredient and by itself left you trying to work out what went into it. Even the Freak Scene IPA, brewed to enhance the flavours of their dishes, did exactly that.
Scott and his team looked after us perfectly- we will definitely be going back, and soon!
Very enjoyable Saturday lunch . Delightful Avocado and crab , salmon, pork belly and more , friendly and attentive service . We loved it .
Great food and vibes, original and fun place
Food was epic. All the food was amazing but the standout was the beef tataki - delicious.
The food was good but not outstanding. The restaurant is very loud with rock, punk, and alternative greats blasting throughout. Service was extremely attentive and fun to interactive with. All-in a fun restaurant, but if you're a serious foodie, it's unlikely to make your top 10.
My third visit here and it still proves to be a popular destination. The restaurant was packed and the noise level was high but it created a good buzz about the place. The food was delicious with only one dish falling below outstanding (this was a brand new dish and may need a bit of tweaking). We ate crab wontons, hot tuna, chicken with peanut sauce, garlic baked mushrooms, red shrimp (a bit bitter because of the char) and pointed cabbage which was the dish of the night. Staff were stretched but cheery and helpful. Could have done with our plates being changed frequently between dishes to stop flavours being muddled but this is only a tiny gripe. A brilliant restaurant and divine food. 😋
The ambiance and music is great, suits the relaxed vibe and open kitchen style. The food is RIDICULOUS - the beef, pork, scallops... you name it. Proper eye closing sensual experience, and on top of all that you the waiters and even chefs are so friendly and helpful at talking you through the menu and what they're making and how. Will be coming back again and again.
Tasty inventive food served at a counter. The chef and staff are very friendly and the cocktails are delicious!
Great find, very interesting, creative and tasty food! Nice decor and friendly chef (Alberto) made our evening.
They were a bit short on staff when we went, so service and attentiveness were a bit lacking, but overall we had a good time. Most of the portions are quite small.
They is only bar/stool seating so fine for smallish groups. We booked a table but had to wait quite a long time to be seated.
The waitstaff was completely inattentive and I had to ask for a basic cocktail 4 times (while sat at the bar) and still never received it. Though they tried to place it on the bill, they were willing to remove the charge.
Fun, good food and good ambience. Love the salmon sashimi "pizzas" and the chilli crab wonton and cabbage dishes. Would go back for a quick bite. Small drawback that service was a bit slow when busy though
