Scott Hallsworth was head chef of Nobu in Park Lane, London for six years. He opened Nobu Melbourne in his native Australia before returning to London to create Kurobuta, the Japanese Izakaya.
Freak Scene is Scott's new restaurant. We hope you like it.
Fantastic food from Scott & his team, exceptional service from Phar & her team. The black cod tacos are delicious & great to see an old favourite with the Nasu Dengaku making an appearance.
Had a pretty theatre meal and enjoyed the variation of the menu, all of the dishes were outstanding and I would definitely recommend
Sensational food! Had to resist trying everything on the menu! Very friendly service and great to see Scott and his team at work.
Inventive, interesting and delicious sharing plates. Wonderfully busy but service was friendly and quick.
Really lovely food and great service. Some dishes a bit pricey.
Inventive dishes, friendly welcoming vibe, this is fast becoming one of my favourite places to eat.
Great people working there, Nice Vibe and DELICIOUS Food. Thank you Freak Scene!
Second time I’ve eaten here and it was as good as the first. All plates were absolutely delicious. My favourite is the garlic baked mushrooms (I’m not vegetarian) which is full of umami flavours. But everything is good here.
The staff were lovely and friendly. The food was a bit on the heavy side for me - a lot of taco-like stuff. But it's a decent spot and ambiance is nice.
The food has lived up to the hype. The flavours were incredible. The black cod tacos were so good, we had to order a repeat serving of it. The salmon sashimi pizza and the seared beef salad was also excellent. The slight disappointment perhaps was the pork cups, whereby the sauce just went everywhere. But otherwise a fantastic foodie experience, would highly recommend for all foodies.
Amazing food - cool, sexy atmosphere. Taste sensation....I think the food actually put me in the mood for other things!!! And that's what she said. Great for dates
The only downside to the restaurant is the lack of room for tables, it makes conversation for a group very difficult, I'm sure that if larger premises become available, it would make sense to move as the quality of the food will ensure that the trade will increase to fill it.
Highly recommend! Great atmosphere amazing food reasonably priced! Scott is at the Forfront talking passionately about the food and both him and his team serving dishes to perfection. The flavours explode in your mouth and each dish stands on it own.
The food was fantastic. Spicy crab wonton, marinaded aubergine and chicken in peanut and soy was all amazing. Chef and bar staff were great fun. Will definitely be back.
We were so excited to try this new restaurant out and wow it met all our experience expectations! Fab sit up bar restaurant watching chefs cooking and putting plates together, very enthusiastic and helpful staff and food was amazing! Small sharing plates with most delicious ingredients and flavours. What a find! Have recommended to all our family and friends since going and will definitely return! Thank you and hope this new venture goes really well for you- it definitely should with your talent!
Stunning food. Really interesting and completely delicious as well as beautiful on the plate. Along with incredibly friendly service including from the two owners themselves. It's noisy and set out counter style so not for groups who want to chat but if you're solo or 2 or 3 in number and like a buzzy room, it's perfection.
Bit late in writing this review but just wanted to say what a great meal we had at Freak Scene. Having dined at Scott's older ventures I had high expectations of both the quality and originality of the food - Iwasn't disappointed. Food was delicious. Ambience was great and the staff were really friendly and good fun - the drinks were excellent too. Also was great to see Scott working the kitchen and it was nice to meet the man himself. Very friendly and easy going (being Aussie I guess it's part of his DNA) but working hard and with great results. Will definitely go back.
Just LOVED Freak Scene. The crab and avocado wonton bombs were a dream and everything from the food to the drinks (hello Bonzai Kitten) felt just a little bit naughty.
Go if you want a cheeky night with friends or partner for something a little off the wall, and don't forget to leave your stamp in the bathrooms - felt tip pens and blank walls are a genius idea...
Weird food and too expensive compare with fair London restaurant. No recommended.
Great place for a Date as its great food with a chilled atmosphere. The staff are really knowledgeable about the menu aswell, which makes the experience more interesting.
Lives up to the hype. Fantastic food, excellent service, will definitely return.
Amazing tastes and textures with great cocktails and beer
Food was brilliant would highly recommend would go once a month
Delicious food served in a funky setting. Great for a date night!
Slightly repetitive menu but every dish was great and we can’t get enough Australian-Asian fusion.
Brilliant, am sure to go back even just for the 80s music
Great concept, overall 4/5 food quality with no particular must-try dish.
Only downside of its up beat ambience is that hearing and speaking takes more effort than it usually does. The layout and concept of Freak Scene is reminiscent of Barrafina. It was also fun watching the chefs make our food in front of us. I love that, unlike Barrafina, booking is possible. The service was great as well. Will return!
For something different, have the sake bomb!
I'm so pleased we visited. Exceptional food set in the coolest venue. The ambiance, soundtrack and artwork made it for us!
Awesome Japanese snacks cooked in front of you, while you enjoy the cocktails and cold beer.
Love the food. Great atmosphere. Would strongly recommend to anyone who love interesting Asian cooking.
Loved it. The food was delicious and nice relaxed vibe.
Amazing food with a twist. Creative dishes with great flavours. Atmosphere had good vibes. Service was really friendly, could see food being made and speak to chef. Thoroughly recommend this spot.
Definitely going to be a hit in soho, the food was so tasty, great mixture and changing menu. I can't wait to go back!
So happy that Freak Scene has re opened in Soho. We have all been missing it in Farringdon!
More delicious than ever with new dishes on the menu as well as the old favourites, every mouthful is a flavour explosion.
Chicken fried chicken, Spicy Thai Sausages and Miso Aubergine top of the favourites list!
Excellent lunch! One of the best meals I’ve had in a while. Perfect food, I can’t recommend enough. Order one of everything, you won’t be disappointed!
While the food was adventurous and featured interesting combinations the strictly bar seating was uncomfortable and the decor seemed to not be fully finished so rather than drawing you into an Asian dive bar (which seemed to be the half-hearted aim) you felt like you were in a chain establishment at a provincial American airport. The cocktails also felt they could be served in such a place, mainly water with no strong sense of alcohol or flavour.
Everything we tried on the menu was delicious and left is wanting to try everything else but had no room for more! Some interesting combinations (pork belly and mussels) that worked well. Visited late afternoon when it was quiet and had a long chat with owners, who was lovely, about the background to the restaurant and food. Highly recommend
I love Kurobuta so was super excited about trying Freak Scene and I wasn’t disappointed! The food was absolutely delicious - top items we tried were the chicken-fried-chicken, the aubergine, the black cod tacos and the crab and avocado wontons. I like the counter dining but my only constructive feedback is that they need to improve the service - they’d only be open 3 weeks when we went though so know this will get sorted! But it was difficult to get anyone’s attention for new drinks or when one of our dishes had been forgotten about. But would highly recommend!
Great food - amazing - 4 of us had most of the menu - everything excellent - particularly liked the black cod taco, the nasu dengaku (aubergine), the hoisin pork belly and the fried chicken
Like the early days of Kurobuta - happy days
We will be back 🤗
This is my second time visiting Freak Scene and the new venue did not disappoint. Seating is around the long counter watching the food being prepared which allows you to chat to the chef and waiting staff or just admire the dishes as they are being plated up!
The food was great - try the crab and avocado wontons and the pork belly! The music is good and the atmosphere was friendly and relaxed. I'll be back again for that 8 hour, slow cooked, pork belly!
No pictures as we ate everything too quickly!
So glad Freakscene found its new home in Soho! I went with my boyfriend on a Friday night for the opening weekend. The environment is casual but the food is extraordinary. The sashimi pizza with truffle ponzu was amazing. Can’t wait to go back and see what Scott does with the menu as it expands!
