The Galvin Green Man pub is a return home for Michelin starred Essex-born brothers, Chris & Jeff Galvin. Already awarded a Michelin Bib Gourmand and 2 AA Rosettes, the building is set in 1.5 acres of riverside meadow amidst the beautiful countryside with the River Chelmer as a companion, near the village of Great Waltham. The Charming Green Man is one of the oldest pubs in Essex, having been built in 1341 even boasts a bus stop at its front door – ideal for indulging in a drink or two in the Essex Pub Of The Year. The award winning pub serves carefully selected beers with a strong emphasis on working with local craft brewers.

As an addition to the pub, The Galvin Brothers have added a stunning restaurant boasting panaromic views delivering a refined menu, concentrating on Modern British cooking, using carefully sourced ingredients.

This was our second visit. The first was dire, this was as bad.

We arrived early and went to the bar for drinks before our meal, I had a cranberry juice, what else it had in it I’m not sure, my husband asked for a Virgin Mary and was told sorry don’t do them. What!! Tomato juice with Lea and perins and some tobasco. He ended up with an orange juice and lemonade, the orange juice that ghastly carton stuff.

We were taken to our table, we were put between a table of four on one side and a table of six on the other, conversation was impossible.

Our starters arrived my husband had the scotch egg, I had the mozerella. I had eaten all that I wanted and had left some, we waited and waited and waited for our plates to be cleared while staff buzzed around basically doing nothing, they looked at our table a number of times, then one of the senior staff came over, he asked if there was something wrong with the starter I replied no I had just eaten what I wanted. I was then berated like a school child being told I should finish it.

Our mains arrived my husband as on our last visit had the burger, it was a dry and unpalatable as our previous visit. I had the vol u vent of chicken and mushroom. The chicken was like chewing a rubber inner tube and the sauce, gravy, what ever it was couldn’t be defined. It was disgusting.

Again we sat and sat and sat and were totally ignored, in the end we left our table and went to the front desk. Where we were smiled at, simpered at and told that our comments would be passed to the staff and that the surcharge had been removed from our bill, still amounting to £72.

Once bitten, twice shy. Sorry will not be going back there again.

Another great experience spent with family on a sunny Saturday evening at the Green Man.
We had a good table overlooking the garden , enjoying great food and drink , the sea bass was done to perfection . We chose from the set menu and found it to be good value for money
Service was timed well ,
I know we will return !

The Galvin Green Man is always a great place to go, either casual or for a special event. In summer sitting out on the terrace is fabulous, in winter the place is large but cosy. Service is fabulous, always friendly and professional, and the staff have excellent recommendations to make from drinks through to types and taste of food. Service is not intrusive but is available as and when required, regulars are greeted warmly and previous preferences remembered, newbies are welcomed and introduced to a helpful and warm staff. The food is something else, great quality, amazing flavour, superb combinations and at a very reasonable price for the quality and surroundings.

Overly expensive for what it is.
Didn’t have the entire menu.
Guinness was not available.
We have been, will not return - will go to Smiths in Ongar, Hayward’s in Epping or Alec’s Brentwood as worked out the same price for a more luxurious experience.
Staff were lovely.
Lovely reception area which restaurant did not live up to.

We are regulars at the Green Man, the food is delicious, the service is absolutely outstanding (friendly, professional, great recommendations, relaxed but attentive), and the price is reasonable (not cheap casual dining price, but not expensive swanky restaurant price despite the restaurant operating at the high quality end of the market). This is always our go to restaurant for special occasions or when we have visitors from abroad who we want to feed well :-) We also love to hang out in the garden and on the veranda during summer where eating al fresco is perfect.

Very disappointed, having read the reviews we were expecting more. The waiting staff are friendly. The food left a bit to be desired. Our starters were fine, but the mains were left very wanting. My husbands burger was so dry and bland it was horrible, as for mine the venison vol au vent was terrible, it was so salty it was inedible. In fairness we were offered alternatives but chose not to accept.

It is also worth checking the bill carefully as we were charged for wine that we did not order.

Outstanding food and good service spoilt by the wretched smell of scenty chemicals (was it air freshener?) which completely overpower the taste of the food. This was our second visit and I have had the same problem each time. It is such a great shame, as this has to be one of the best pub restaurants Essex has ever known.

Excellent Sunday lunch, friendly, helpful staff and courteous service. We are so lucky to have the Green Man 1/2 hour away. The same can't be said of the Open Table booking, which hadn't been received. Luckily the Restaurant Manager was highly professional, and managed to fit us in with a minimum of fuss and delay. I showed her the confirmation email and they kindly provided us with complimentary bread and olives. The food, as ever, was excellent, and the service friendly and efficient. The roast beef was delicious, as was my wife's bream. Best Tarte Tatin I've had in ages. Looking forward to going back, but won't be booking thru Open Table again.

We were there for a Sunday roast and the waitress was really attentive when they had run out of cauliflower cheese. She suggested an alternative but then had a word with the kitchen to make more cauliflower cheese then came back to see if we would like to switch. We were very grateful.

The quality of the food in a Galvin restaurant always seem to be of a consistent high quality, the Galvin Green Man is no exception. Not only of a high quality but well presented and with great flavours combinations.

The Green Man is a pub which has been massively extended with a huge barn type room at the rear which forms the main dinning space. The space is bright, airy, and modern, the only criticism would be around noise, surfaces are hard and therefore the space is noisy. We visited on a Saturday lunchtime and the restaurant was pretty much full - good sign, but this meant the space was pretty noisy - great to support a bubbly atmosphere, but less good for something more intimate.

Service was friendly, good and attentive. Prices represent good value based upon the overall quality

Superb meal. Only down side due to where we were sat was the door to the garden being in constant use by patrons so our meal was disturbed on numerous occasions and the door was left open a lot which interfered with he effectiveness of the air conditioning.
