Super Sunday lunch overlooking the cliffs and the Atlantic Ocean.
Copious bowls of veg meant we all left extremely contented.
Lovely space and stunning view for a sunny Sunday lunch. Particularly impressed with the several accompanying small dishes of seasonal vegetables. We will be doing this walk again.
Gara Rock Hotel is lovely set on a cliff looking over the sea
The menu for lunch and dinner is exactly the same which makes the evening dinner a bit ordinary as there is no exciting alternative
The hotel is really modern and hip but the food lets it down. They need an exciting chef to bring it up to a standard you expect at a hotel demanding five star prices
For example The Driftwood in Devon
The scenery and styling alone merit a trip/trek to Gara Rock. Having the feeling of sitting directly on the beautiful Devon coastline is an unique and wonderful experience. The food is solidly good and plentiful. The choice at lunchtime was good. However, service was very slow. We had to ask twice for menus and water when we arrived even though most tables were empty and there weren’t any big groups. It took 40 minutes to clear our table when we had finished and we had to ask to have it cleared twice. Tables around us were not cleared either when customers had finished and there was definitely a “slow” feel to everything from about 1:30 onwards. For a place which otherwise is so slick, polished and beautiful this was a disappointment. After all, good food and good service should go hand in hand - otherwise what is a restaurant for? (This was a Friday in January and so hardly the busy season.)
Service lax and inattentive. Food very expensive but not worth it. Steak was lovely, accompaniments and starter poor.
Food is good but expensive. Could do with more vegetables included on set menu. Side portion of chips was very small. Bread is extra even if you order soup which seems very mean.
Limited choice and very expensive. Some of meat was tough. Kids pasta was very poor.
We’ve visited here a couple of times before in the summer and sat outside and had a great experience. We visited again on Thursday and had a very different experience. The menu was limited, service was great to start and then went down hill and very slow. We were also shocked at paying £7 for a chocolate brownie. Fantastic location, could do with a better menu with more choices and faster service.
As always, a great location with stunning views. Alongside the delicious food, a very cool interior with some gorgeous rooms. Would recommend staying here or do the lovely walk from Salcombe for lunch or afternoon tea.
Fantastic food, great service, one of our favourites and lived up to usual excellent standards. Views spectacular too!
We absolutely loved our lunch with our three kids. It was the perfect reward after completing the coastal path walk. A very relaxed vibe, stunning interiors and a spectacular location.
Delicious food, wine and a great kids menu! We will be back, hopefully next time for longer as the cinema room looks very appealing! Thank you
Really lovely atmosphere and the adults food was great. However the kids pasta was spicy to the extent that my daughter couldn’t eat it. Our waitress agreed it shouldn’t have had chilli in it. Also when we wanted to have a drink in the lounge bar afterwards no one came to take our order, which was strange as the same thing happened before lunch and I had to find the staff member who said “oh, I didn’t notice you there”. It was the same member if staff on duty after lunch so you would have thought she’d have been extra attentive, but apparently not! They would easily have sold us some more drinks and and a cake for my daughter (who was still hungry as she’d had no lunch!) but we left after about half an hour of waiting. Weird.
Disappointing. Inexperienced staff, over priced basic lunch menu and cold atmosphere due to the doors being left open for the whole of the lunch service. £12.00 for a small crab sandwich with a few lettuce leaves and £10 for two glasses of tomato juice is unacceptable even in this establishment. We were really looking forward to visiting Gara Rock and enjoying a delicious lunch after reading a local article. The experience could not have been more different from the glowing review we read about. Great location but that’s about it. Definitely not worth the drive.
Lovely family atmosphere with dogs welcome too.
Lovely decor and lovely view.
The stunning rural location and cliff-top views along the coast & out to sea make this an exceptional restaurant - and the food is very good too! Slightly limited menu at lunch time, and the wine isn't cheap, but one to come back to again and again.
Very basic. Comparable to Beefeater and Weatherspoon’s.
Overpriced and service needs a lot of work.
Just come back from Gara rock and already want to return. Most beautiful setting , beautiful interiors and beautiful staff. Service impeccable, food outstanding hats off to chef and all the team. Spa left you totally relaxed and accommodation was fantastic. Little bit of heaven on earth will be back at every opportunity 💕
2nd recent visit for lunch and menu/food disappointing again. Standards have definitely dropped in last 6 months sadly.
Staff were so friendly and welcoming, food was delicious and lovely decor and ambience!
We had an excellent meal on Sunday evening and would definitely recommend Gara Rock. The staff were very friendly, the hotel is very cosy and comfortable. I have been to Gara Rock many times for meals. Mainly during the day for lunch or tea and scones 😁 But since the hotel has reopened, it provides an excellent evening menu.
This is the most amazing location. Furnishing and ambience is just right. Service is generally good but weak in places. We ate here twice. My partner had 2 good meals. I had 2 poor fish meals. Dry tasteless swordfish and miniscule expensive plaice. The waitress on the first evening was unable to answer any questions about the menu and forgot to tell us about one of the specials.
Whilst Gara Rock retains an ideal location in a beautiful area with limited options you have to say, even as a non-resident the overall experience could not be faulted, The staff were amazing, the location was gorgeous and it looks a very nice hotel and not just a restaurant. Recommended. Dave and Claire x
Stayed the weekend at Gara Rock and had a fantastic time. Food was great and atmosphere and other guests were great! Service was a little chaotic as in bringing food to table which wasn’t ours but it didn’t detract from the occasion! We shall return!
A really lovely evening- great staff, outstanding food and an amazing location.
Great food and service in a beautiful setting. Staff are very attentive
Amazing we loved it. The only thing that was a bit frustrating was the amount of bloggers there, it seemed very obvious who they were & who the paying guests were. A little frustrating for the paying guests.
Stunning location with a beautiful vista. The whole way the building has been designed really does make the most of its unique vantage point. The decor is contemporary with traditional twists and very warm and the whole team friendly and welcoming.
We had both dinner and breakfast, both were of outstanding quality and extremely tasty. I would highly recommend and hopefully be back soon.
Gara Rock is a beautiful restaurant perched above stunning coastline. The food is good. Would like more fish choices on the menu and some more vegetarian options though. They had an excellent sauvignon blanc from NZ Dogpoint.
Amazing food - every single thing was delicious! Best vegetarian breakfast we've ever had.
I’m am gluten free & the staff were more than helpful re choosing from menu etc
Yes rock is fantastic place to go for a coffee, glass of wine, cake or a full lunch or dinner. The outside space on a warm day is great but equally inside in now spacious and welcoming. They allow dogs everywhere. Great kids choices too.
Every visit in the last couple of years has a most pleasant experience, whether for a special occasion or to find a haven for rest and fuel during a south-path walk. The staff are splendid. Food well cooked, well presented.
We really enjoyed our visit, loved the atmosphere and the fact that you could relax in the lounge area rather than just being focused on dining was a welcome addition.
We felt quite underwhelmed by the menu with its limited choice and considering the statement that the look and feel of Gara Rick presents, the menu was lacking inspiration to tempt those tastebuds.
Unfortunately the service didn’t overly impress either, it was slow and lacking in attentiveness and attention to detail - at one point the waitress was clearing the table while my husband was still eating!
This said it wouldn’t stop us returning as we did enjoy the location, atmosphere, ambience and lounge area.
Poor service, poor food, excellent location.
Had to wait an age to be served after which the food was both poor quality and cold. This was followed by coffees that were tepid and had to be sent back.
Lovely view and great food for Father's Day lunch, shame about the service though which let down the overall experience.
A stunning location in a very contemporary building. The food was very good. The service was just about ok but we were getting a bit edgy waiting, however the staff were very pleasant
Food amazing, hot and tastes great but portions have suddenly halved in size but increased in price which is very disappointing. Manager was very friendly but there werent enough staff on duty.
We’ve stayed before and loved the restaurant, however this time the service was very slow. Staff were lovely but seemed stressed. Delicious food.
Wonderful service, excellent food and great wine!
