Poor service, poor food, excellent location.
Had to wait an age to be served after which the food was both poor quality and cold. This was followed by coffees that were tepid and had to be sent back.
Lovely view and great food for Father's Day lunch, shame about the service though which let down the overall experience.
A stunning location in a very contemporary building. The food was very good. The service was just about ok but we were getting a bit edgy waiting, however the staff were very pleasant
Food amazing, hot and tastes great but portions have suddenly halved in size but increased in price which is very disappointing. Manager was very friendly but there werent enough staff on duty.
We’ve stayed before and loved the restaurant, however this time the service was very slow. Staff were lovely but seemed stressed. Delicious food.
Wonderful service, excellent food and great wine!
Amazing spot, beautiful views, lovely food. Only drawback is the service which isn’t up to the location and kitchen quality. Once that’s sorted, will be a force to be reckoned with for sure. Peter is amazing though. As is Roydon. Super friendly, helpful and pros
Beautiful location and fabulous rooms and facilities
Ambience of restaurant great
Service in restaurant extremely slow and at times totally disorganised which was a shame as food was very good. We did think it was short staffed and the three staff were extremely stretched at times
No cocktail list was shown to us at any time
Absolutely perfect dining experience, food was excellent, table service was perfect, the view is stunning and cannot wait to go back.
We had possibly the worst restaurant experience we’ve ever had at Gara Rock. We had booked a table there in hope that we may book to stay for our minimoon next year, but when we arrived we quickly realised that this was not the place for us. There was no one around to greet us as we walked into the restaurant, none of the waitresses made eye contact with us, I would go as far as to say that they were purposefully ignoring us, conveniently hidden by the queue of people at the bar ordering for outside. Bearing in mind the inside restaurant was not busy they keep us waiting a good 10 minutes, by which point we got fed up and had to walk over to one of them to specifically ask to be seated. We were met with a sigh and an eye roll and still no eye contact. We were shown to our table which was not near the window, arguably the only reason you would book to go to this restaurant, so we asked if we could move to one of the vacant tables near the window to which the answer was a simple no, with no explanation and no compromise. At this point in a usual restaurant I would’ve left, but as there are no other restaurants around Gara Rock we didn’t have much choice - this could be the reason for the lack of customer service, they do not compete with any other restaurants so feel they don’t have to try very hard! We were seated and chose what to order within a few minutes (it’s not an extensive menu) so again we looked round to be served but no one would give us eye contact...again, around 15 minutes later my partner got up and asked the waitress if she could take our order. The food came out relatively quickly and was very good, but the poor service we had experienced so far had just tainted the whole experience for us and we could not wait to leave. I won’t be recommending this place for anything other than the views, and even then there are better places to look out to sea. Very disappointing.
table of 6, ordered Porthilly oysters to start but then told it was unavailable so went for the Mussels which was very nice, ordered 2 portions of the Cote de boeuf, one Red mullet and one Halibut dish. The salad that came with the beef was so salty it was inedible and the leeks that came with the halibut was gritty so left them aside. We did tell the waiter who apologised and offered to replace the leeks but we were not bothered anymore. We still paid the full bill, overall average and inconsistent as I had the halibut the day before and it had no problems and delicious. I do recommend the beef as it was cooked perfectly.
Beautifully decorated - food was excellent quality and delicious when it arrived- staff are lovely but service is generally a bit slow and you need to attract attention to get service but it’s a popular place so always busy. I have been several times and will continue to come as I always enjoy the atmosphere but service could be improved on
Fantastic experience. Food was the best we had in Salcombe that weekend. Will be back for sure
I went there with my daughter for her 18th birthday
Ordered two drinks but only one came out so had to ask for the other
Both had salmon but my daughters had a small caterpillar or grub crawling on it which obviously had to be changed by the young male waiter with not much apologies
Main course we had lamb but not much taste
Take it from me I’m certainly not a fussy eater
After all that I skipped desert and had coffee which was very good
I expected more as so many people told me it was good
Taking into account it wasn’t busy , probably about six tables be used
We had a delicious meal to celebrate an anniversary. The views over the sea are amazing and the food and service were faultless too. We enjoyed tasty starters - mushroom soup and chickpea fritters - followed by lamb chop and hare ragu. The chocolate brownie was soft and warm. Just right. The staff were friendly and looked after us well. I would definitely recommend.
The staff were attentive but the nearby table was left uncleared for 30 minutes. For the prices charged
- ie restaurant rather than pub- we felt it was too long to sit looking at someone's left over meal.
The food was good but we had really wanted a menu that was more good gastro pub than fine dining. We were not sure where the Garage Rock was trying to pitch itself.
It's a fantastic location so we hope it succeeds.
Excellent interesting food served to us at the end of a very busy sunny Easter sunday - we were very impressed! Delicious, fresh items on the menu. Stunning views where ever you sit. So refreshing to be in a contemporary seaside restaurant.
Not often this happens but I genuinely looked at the menu and not one thing jumped out as ‘delicious, ooh I’d like that!’. In fact it was a challenging read. I do live in London and dine out regularly and as a result am very spoilt! Chez Bruce is my local I’m no stranger to fine dining. It tasted good without being great.
Fabulous staff, Alice was ace.
This is a great stop off for a long walk . The staff are very polite, the menu is interesting and the food tasty, the ambience is relaxed but still quite classy and the views are lovely . On this occasion ( Saturday in the Easter bank holiday) the service was slow, but normally it is better.
Visited on Easter weekend for lunch - the hotel itself is stunning, the views spectacular. If only the food and service could match the bare bones of this place, it would be incredibly special. It felt like the staff were young and inexperienced. It took us 20 minutes of standing at the bar to even be noticed by one of the 5 bar staff. The waiting staff were run off their feet and did not know how to react when I sent my crab sandwich back. One, because it had around one dessert spoon full of crab in it and two, because the bread was decidedly stale. I decided not to pick another hole in it (the fact the crab did not contain the herbs it was supposed to). Said crab sandwich arrived back 15 minutes later, when I had eaten all the accompanying chips but this time the bread was even more stale, I was told it had been toasted to make it less stale, but only one side had been toasted, the other side was still un-toasted and well, still very much stale. I have never heard of a toasted crab sandwich... I think the chef had probably just had enough at that point. The hotel was heaving with down from London types probably wanting a change of scene from Babington House or The Pig. I hope they could see past the errors of this newly re-launched hotel and will come back again, hopefully once the staff are a bit more invested and the chef has learnt what a £12.00 sandwich should look like. My partner's salad was better - but lacked a good dressing and any real flavour. The final view of the shimmering blue sea was marred by a pile of used dog-poo bags, melting in the hot sun... right by the hotel's main entrance. Nice. I don't envy the person whose job it will have been to clean up that particular bit of mess.... This hotel probably functions ok-ish on a quieter day when there are less demands on the staff and less demanding clients in town. I just hope this team will grow in experience and hopefully iron out some very large creases.
I've been to Gara Rock a few times and overall I generally enjoy the food and experience. The location and view really is amazing. The newly updated decor and refurb is good and I like the new layout and extra space including the more relaxed area's if just going for a drink. The service is also generally very good, although upon my last visit it lacked somewhat. My only slight moan is that being vegan the menu is really very limited, the food we received was very good but I would really like to see more plant based options and thought into these type of dishes rather than having to chose an already limited vegetarian dish without an ingredient included.
The location and ambience are excellent, unfortunately the food and service are not as good, for the prices charged and the extra cost for vegetables the food quality does not justify the expense. Service was average at best which was a real pity.
Lovely spot and great food. Relaxed and friendly service and space for kids to play outside.
Excellent food location, food and service. What more could you ask for?
Excellent food. Let down by inattentive service and wine wrongly described in the menu.
Recently opened, you get the feeling this hotel team is still bedding in. The location is fabulous and the hotel is beautiful, but until the food is of a matching quality we won't be back. The menu looks great but completely failed to deliver. Very little cooking skill on show (when a menu just lists the ingredients you expect some process involved), no imagination when it comes to plaiting up and the staff didn't manage those small things that make a diner feel well attended to. We cancelled our second night booking to go elsewhere and had a much better meal. A real shame because Gara Rock could be brilliant. Hopefully the kitchen will catch up with the rest.
Great location. Food cold and beef was dry. Overpriced for what it was.
We were so looking forward to our lunch at Gara Rock Hotel but it proved a big disappointment and an embarrassment for the people we brought along. Despite the wonderful setting for this hotel the service was poor, the food was disappointing, the floor & chairs were dirty & there was only one working toilet!
Beautiful location with breathtaking views.
Calming atmosphere with a relaxed feel.
Shame the lift to the disabled toilets was out of order & I had to push my husband in his wheelchair right around the outside of the building to the toilet over a very bumpy path.
Other than that, it was perfect!
Yes, definitely, but go in a small car - roads are very narrow indeed.
Fab views but slightly overpriced and no flair with the dishes that were served.
We actually ate at the restaurant at Gara Rock both nights of our stay, the food was fantastic and very well priced (based on a Londoner's opinion). I had seen other reviews that gave the service a bit of a bad rep which made me nervous, but was pleasantly surprised to find this was not the case with our stay. On top of this the food was great, the restaurant was nicely relaxed - not silly busy, they played appropriately chilled ambient music and the space was really nicely decorated. If you're in this part of the country drop in for sure.
Service extremely poor. Crab sandwich hadly any crab.
Over charged for open product on receipt for 11.50 no idea what that was for!
Beautiful location and could be stunning but menu limited and very poor service
With reservations: plates were cold, main course brought out before starter. Range on menu very limited to 'spicy' options.
Fabulous location. Had roast beef Sunday lunch al fresco which was delicious.
Only complaint was service too slow. Staff seemed unaware of which tables they were delivering food and drink to, not catching customers eye to order more drinks. May have been due to not enough staff but also lack of basic training. Personalities were lovely - just a bit clueless on customer care and their needs.
We have been visiting the Gara Rock Hotel in its various guises over the years. Our meal on Saturday was nice (not amazing) but incredibly expensive. The portions are on the small side and it just doesn't represent value for money. It's just not good enough for what you charge. We shall continue to drop in for drinks on the way back from the beach but we won't be eating with you again. I really wish you would offer some great pub food. You'd clean up if you did.
Delicious food and wonderful service in a priceless location. We loved it! Great cocktail bar too!
Stunning location, stunning food, great staff. Cannot recommend highly enough! It is a real gem.
The service was very slow, it took 35 minutes to get a bottle of water. The orders were chaotic. The skate came despite being told there was none left. The squid was a tiny portion and my muscles were so hot I couldn't eat them. The monks beard was very salty. It's a lovely spot so it was a shame it wasn't a better experience as I was intriducing my family to Gara rock.
