We have been visiting the Gara Rock Hotel in its various guises over the years. Our meal on Saturday was nice (not amazing) but incredibly expensive. The portions are on the small side and it just doesn't represent value for money. It's just not good enough for what you charge. We shall continue to drop in for drinks on the way back from the beach but we won't be eating with you again. I really wish you would offer some great pub food. You'd clean up if you did.
Delicious food and wonderful service in a priceless location. We loved it! Great cocktail bar too!
Stunning location, stunning food, great staff. Cannot recommend highly enough! It is a real gem.
The service was very slow, it took 35 minutes to get a bottle of water. The orders were chaotic. The skate came despite being told there was none left. The squid was a tiny portion and my muscles were so hot I couldn't eat them. The monks beard was very salty. It's a lovely spot so it was a shame it wasn't a better experience as I was intriducing my family to Gara rock.
We really enjoyed our meal and the staff were efficient and friendly.
Needless to say views spectacular - we will be back!
This was our first visit to Gara Rock. It was an "interesting" drive following the Sat Nav down some tiny tracks and lanes....but we made it there in the end! Worth the trip though! Its location is stunning and we could see why it was so popular with walkers and dogs! The Sunday roast was lovely.....all well cooked and decent portions.
Food good but service not the best , on arrival waited for 10 minutes before table service drinks order taken. When orders taken minutes later told some starters not available, sat down for meal all starters arrived bar one which turned up sometime later.
Meal was good but service let it down.
I’m lucky I drive a 4wd as there are so many potholes on drive you just can’t miss them!!
Beautiful setting overlooking the remote coastline. With a relatively simple dinner menu to choose from (a good sign!) we were not disappointed and the young chef leading the way at Gara Rock did not disappoint. If we were to give one recommendation, it would be to have a more balanced dessert menu in the evening as there were 3 sorbets listed and, if I remember correctly, only 6 items to choose from. The breakfast was stunning - I highly recommend the poached eggs on salad. Perhaps if the restaurant has few people in it some of the space could be cordoned off to make it feel more intimate and in such a venue staff could be better informed though they were very pleasant.
Great location overlooking the sea, great views! Beautiful, considered decor. Lovely roast dinner. Also recommend a spa stay here.
Our first time at Gara Rock. Very attractive venue with superb view. A good meal, although two of us felt there was a bit too much horseradish in our crab starter, it slightly overwhelmed the taste of crab. Hare ragu and black pudding were delicious. Desserts were interesting. Service was prompt with well-informed staff. Our window table might be too hot on a summer’s day.
Wonderful meal in fabulous restaurant that boasts magnificent views. Friendly attentive staff & beautifully presented and tasting food.
The service is warm and friendly. All the staff are knowledgable and helpful when asked about both the food and the wine. The food itself is everything and more than you could hope for. Even the bread and butter is exquisite. The food is well presented perfectly cooked and full of flavour. Everything perfect
Great views and very good Sunday lunch. Dog friendly and will definitely be back soon!
Lovely day with beautiful views and nice coastal walk. Hotel itself was difficult to find - do not rely on your sat nav unless you have a 4x4 !! Well worth it once we'd got there.
Lovely views, lovely decor, ok food but above all appalling service!
Gara is like home from home. The staff are lovely. Service is great. There's nothing not to love about gara.
Great Saturday lunch for a table of 8 for my birthday - delicious food and loved the interior. Incredible Sea view !
Cheese Nibbles great. Game terrine pretty tasteless. Turkey Burger and Chips excellent. Squid with Black Pudding pretty good but black pudding too thick and therefore a bit cloying. Salad dressing delicious.
The restaurant is dog friendly (we took ours) but that is no excuse for a dirty floor which looked like it ha not been swept or vacuumed for days. Chairs were dusty.
Female waitress was very cheerful and friendly bit male barman/waiter was not !!
We had a fabulous NYE evening at the Gara Rock. The menu was excellent, great live band, service brilliant, & ambiance superb, well done all!
We have been to Gara Rock before on several occasions and it has never disappointed. However our latest visit on 30th December was disappointing. The restaurant had a huge number of covers to service which they clearly couldn’t manage. We waited a long time for our drinks and when our Sunday lunches were finally served we had only one slice of lamb on our plates. We asked for more and this was later served but where have you ever been served just one slice of meat on your plate?
We enjoyed an excellent lunch, great atmosphere and wonderful views. Staff excellent.
As Arnie said, we will return!
Fantastic service, food, location and atmosphere - Gara Rock is a must visit!
Gara Rock has beautiful views, great food, a perfect day out
Very nice ambience and lovely location. The fish was great, very light batter.
Absolutely love it there! Would always recommend it.
My friend and I were very happy with our stay. The hotel is beautifully decorated and lunch was delicious. As a vegetarian it would be nice if there was maybe a little more choice but it wasn't a real issue. The staff were all delightful and helpful. We had a junior suite and there was a problem with our heating but we were moved to an identical suite. Our only issue, which I mentioned to Bess (Beth?) was that the pillows were really uncomfortable/too hard. Apparently you have oredered more pillows so that guests can have a softer one if needed. This would be a really good idea. I couldn't sleep with yours and infact we both ended up sleeping with cushions from the sofa!
One other thing, just to be picky, you didn't have any yoghurt or hollandaise sauce at breakfast which was a shame.
We also used the spa which was nice.
All in all a really lovely place and we would definitely both come back with our respective husbands. I could sit and look at the view all day.
Outstanding Sunday lunch,in a welcoming and stylish dining room, with the most breathtaking cliff and sea views .Good wine list to compliment the food, and leisurely ,and efficient service .Really relaxing surroundings, with natural décor in gentle colours to set of the stunning location .It seems to me that a great deal of thought and care has gone in to everything .I hope the hotel prospers ,and continues to engage with their customers with the same enthusiasm, because it was a please to spend time there
We enjoyed a super tasty Saturday lunch with family. A wet and windy day only enhanced the location. Food was great - a really interesting menu that suited all of us. A couple of meals were a little late in arriving, maybe forgotten (?) but no drama and arrived very quickly as soon as we questioned it.
Would highly recommend the Gara Rock for just about any occasion...
Looking forward to our next visit!
Lovely food, attentive staff, fabulous location - can’t wait to go back!
Great service and exceptional food with outstanding coastal views
Good quality food and drink of the limited options available.
Having visited the old Gara Rock Hotel many times in its previous guise many times before, we were pleasantly surprised to see that the new owners have surpassed themselves in terms of quality, ambience and service. It's now like a Soho House by the sea! We will be back as often as we can.
We had a great time at Gararock - beautiful interiors, great and helpful staff, stunning views and delicious food. For those staying in Salcombe this place is a gem of a find and a great walk along the coast for lunch. only thing that let it down for us is that we stayed at the Hotel for three nights and the menu did not change at all, there were no specials and we felt there could be more local fish on the menu seeing as we were right on the coast.
Outstanding views very comfortable lounge area
Good quality food
Friendly staff although could be more aware of guests after food is served we waited to order a second drink
Suggestion - wider selection Gin not everyone wants local
Overall an excellent venue and we will be back
We ate at Gara rock over the mid-term break. We were lucky we booked a table in advance because it was packed. We enjoyed the spectacular setting and view down the coast. I had ravioli which was a bit on the small side - would not have filled you up - but very tasty. I was lucky I had a starter as well. They did very nice oysters. I would have liked to see a fish like Hake or sea bream - something of that sort on the menu although they did fish and chips.
Once again we had a memorable time. A very friendly welcome, seated where we wanted, courses arrived when wanted, food all beautifully cooked and presented - what more can you want? Thanks to all the staff for another excellent visit.
Lovely place, excellent food and attentive helpful staff who were there when we wanted them
The service was very slow whilst the food was good the poor service let it down .
after ordering we waited 45 mins to be told that they had run out of what we wanted. My friend is vegetarian and the only option left to him was chips! The redeeming feature is that the waitress who informed us was excellent, apologetic and friendly.
Wonderful birthday lunch with the most amazing view. Excellent service and very attractive, stylish interior. Food and wine just perfect for the occasion. We are already booking a return visit!
