It was great
Absolutely lovely people all round, and the food was to die for. We sat at the counter and the chef spoke with us and explained dishes to us – clearly super passionate. Highly recommend!
Great family meal.
One of the few places in TO that you can get real French food and a properly made Kir!
Great food, service & ambiance. I love that delicious french food is a 10 minute walk from my house :).
Gare de l’Est never ceases to shine. The atmosphere is ideal every time, the staff is a delight, the drinks are crafted to perfection and the food is indulgent bliss. Thank you dear GDL. Thank you especially Pauline for setting the tone of welcome, Will for spectacular service end-to-end and the outstanding chef and kitchen staff as always.
Delicious meal at fair prices. Nice ambience for a date night.
It was most enjoyable
Sunday night anniversary dinner. Wonderful food (the scallops needed something to brighten them, but the chicken liver mousse, bouillabaisse, and schnitzel were amazing. And overall a great value for the quality.
Friendly, relaxed, great staff with a good knowledge of wines and food was excellent and I would recommend the steak tartare.
Great food. Menu items are unique. Flavours are good and the food looks stunning.
Had an amazing brunch experience!
Took my boyfriend there for his birthday brunch and didn’t know what to expect aside from the fact that it was French cuisine (Chef’s favourite).
The staff was awesome the food was awesome and had the best time . It was perfect
I can’t wait to go back and experience the dinner menu.
One of my new favourite spots in the East End of Toronto 😍
Service and food quality was excellent. We liked the ambience too. First timers and will go again
Since the opening a few yrs back I have been more than a few times! Currently, the chef and kitchen has changed for the not-so-good! Dinner was below average for the impression this French bistro provides! If you want burger and fries this is the spot tho! However , not at the prices listed! We will not return!
Steak was not prepared properly. The restaurant immediately offered to correct but I preferred to continue with my meal.
Service was pleasant. It was overpriced for what it was.
My wife and I had not been to Gare de L’Est in a while and were quite disappointed by our experience. The food was fine and reasonably priced for what it was. The wine list featured many unknown items at ridiculous prices, anything from France started at $120. Our main disappointment with our experience was the chef yelling loudly and continuously directly at our table For anyone who have traveled experienced fine dining it is well known that no noise is emitted from a Michelin starred kitchen.
It has been almost exactly a year since I was last at Gare de l'Est. That first experience was fantastic. Service was sharp, knowledgeable, attentive yet unpretentious. It's a hard combination to pull off and sadly has been lost. Staff is still friendly but not close to the previous level. The menu changes and food were a bit disappointing as well. No raves from a table of four with the exception of my frog legs. The breading is exquisitely light and flavour mild. On the plus side, we dined on Wednesday when wine is half price. Their list is not overwhelming but has a good variety at a range of price points. Overall this is just an average restaurant now. A shame since the modern bistro space promises a greater experience.
We always have a great meal here. This was our 4th visit and we brought the kids this time. I love that we can have a casual family meal here. This is a true neighbourhood gem! Try the Schnitzel, it's to die for.
I love that they have something special happening everyday. We went for the oysters buck a shuck special from 5-7. Made it just on time.
The kitchen was incredibly loud because it’s an open kitchen and the chef was calling out orders. The restaurant is trying to be upscale and the chef calling out orders really is jarring and disturbing. Wine list is small and generally the restaurant seems to be trying too hard. Unfortunate. Service was fine and food was fine.
The food and service was very good. The portion of lamb was very small. The wine is very overpriced. Need some 30 dollar options.
I ordered the steak frites as well as a side of haricots. Waiter comes back 5 minutes later and asked me to confirm how I wanted my steak done? I said medium rare, and that I don’t believe he asked me that initially. He said he did (but he didn’t). My steak arrived in 2 pieces. One was done rare, the other well done. My haricots also did not arrive. When the waiter realized this he said oh your haricots, I forgot to order them, do you still want them? This was my second time at this restaurant, and purposefully went here to take my parents who were visiting me (and for my dads birthday), and it was less than ideal. The redeeming quality was another waitress who gave us our bill asked me how my meal was, I did. I did not mention the steak doneness but did state I wasn’t happy with not receiving the haricots. She provides me with a $20 gift card which was not necessary but very much appreciated. The initial male waiter did not come back to the table, make eye contact or say anything on our way out after the “I forgot your haricots” conversation.
Great little spot for dinner and a meet up. Had the steak tartare, mussels and charcuterie board. Delicious. The elderflower spritzer was delicious!
We were celebrating a friend's Birthday and it was such a treat to go to a restaurant that we all enjoyed the food, the service and the ambiance. We loved it and cannot wait to go back and try Brunch!! Will tell our friends and family . I have already shared it with a few. Tres bien!
Lovely french food - I was thrilled to have the fogo island crab legs! All in all a lovely date night. The price point, ambience and menu confuse me though! It's almost like they don't know what they're trying to be? There's menu items like escargot, steak tartare, a $100 seafood tower of oysters and crab legs and lobsters, and bouillabaisse, but then almost half of the menu items come with frites? Steak frites, moules frites, burger and frites, steak tartare and frites. Schnitzel. There's table cloths but also chalk boards. The button-downed well dressed waiters did things like de crumb our table and pour our wine properly with a turn and swipe everytime, but then couldn't actually tell us anything about the wine, or figure out how to squeeze all the appetizer dishes onto the table and said things like "oh, I think I'm just gonna de-crumb your table here hold on". That's not quite how they do it, in fine dining establishments, is it. There's an absolutely impressive and super expensive wine list but also families with ten year olds strolling on in for dinner in their t shirts. Look the burger was freaking delicious and I loved the crab legs and our server was pleasant and we had a nice time. But was it a 5 star dining experience? Our bill says yes, the service says only sometimes and the menu just isn't sure. But hey, maybe you're into that kind of thing! Give it a try if you like seafood. Don't ask me what to wear though because I don't know what to tell you.
Always a great meal with you guys. We'll take advantage of the patio this summer! Special thanks to the kitchen team!
Heard about Gare through a friend so we're excited to check it out. Everything was delicious and service was warm and friendly. We'll be back!
We were celebrating our anniversary but didn't make a mention of it. They were very kind to treat us to some bubbles when they found out. Thank you, be back soon.
Gare de L'Est is a nice addition to the East side Toronto dining scene. Food hits the mark, serving classic french bistro fare, properly prepared. Plenty of protein to choose from along with oysters etc..Good wine list. Very nice atmosphere. Great service. Relaxed and unpretentious even though the decor is cool and modern. Recommended.
Service during our visit was brutally bad. Starting with a confused/irritated greeting at the door, and finishing with needing to get up from our long uncleared table to find a waiter and request the bill and machine.
Between those highlights was mediocre food and indifferent service.
They were clearly understaffed (Bastille day at a French bistro on a Sunday... who’d imagine they’d be busy?), but a simple apology for completely disregarding us (when we would have liked to have been eating dessert, and celebrating our anniversary) would have gone a lot longer than: “hoo, lots of people here today”.
Would not recommend, will never go back.
What is the point of asking if it is a special occassion and adding remarks if the server pays no attention to the remarks. Disappointing. She even mentioned that there was a star beside my name.....maybe should have been her first clue. I had been raving about this restaurant for ages to my guest, and being as it was a special occassion it was disappointing. Food was excellent as usual. Service was soso. I have noticed that for my last 3 brunch visits the serving staff 's attire is a little sloppy lately.
Well...took my husband for his birthday dinner... found what we thought was a black hair in our beet salad...we politely mention this and maitre d' takes the salad away and comes back 5-10 minutes later (no apology) and replaces the salad...he says that it wasn't a hair but a root from the beets... whatever....after that, service is very fast and fake (almost like Jack Astor's 😬)... we had multiple servers so weren't sure who really was supposed to be looking after us... food's ok, but it's truly not very best bistro like...pricey for the food and service...when we leave, no one bothers to say good bye or anything else...after complaining we felt that they just wanted us out as quickly as possible... we'll stay downtown next time where you get what you pay for....

Love the restaurant - great service, great food, great value. Absolutely recommend it!
I enjoyed my meal very much, I had the Mussel frites. The only thing I would say could be improved on is the bread they serve; I wish it was not so hard. They should also give a small piece of fresh bread to soak up the leftover juice from the mussels.
Great server Amber, knew the menu in detail and was able to answer any questions. I find the food over rated, classic French bistro fare well present but not well seasoned, and charging for bread basket is ridiculous. Good wine list with great variety.
We were pressed for time but the prompt, attentive service meant that we were done on ample time to make the curtain with about 10 minutes to spare. The oysters were superb!
End of the school year (wife is a teacher)
Another great experience. Cheers!
A friend recommended the restaurant, but we (4 ) were very disappointed. The servers (when we saw them ) were very pleasant, but they were quite inattentive over all. The food was ordinary French bistro fare, but while tasty enough to eat, basically meh. The cocktail one of us ordered was not drinkable, plus much too expensive and the wine was exceptionally overpriced.
We will not return, nor recommend it to anyone.
Excellent restaurant with lovely ambience.
