The food was excellent, went for a set menu - the restaurant was not full, so not fully understanding the very slow service, or having to constantly remind the waiter and the floor manager that we were still waiting for drinks.. or desserts… or the ice cream that as meant to be with the desserts. We actually got our starters before our drinks.

Staff were ok but distracted by a visitor. 3 lunch dishes came quickly and we're tasty but lukewarm. 3 (dumpling) didnt arrive until everyone else has finished their lunches. After enquiring we were told it was because they were steamed? Though we weren't told it would mean a long wait when ordering.

The food took a long time to arrive, with several wrong orders (which we weren’t charged for), it was on cold plates, so half of it was barely Luke warm. It tasted ok, but not great, was frustrating and rather disappointing because we had booked for a special family meal.

Sadly an utter shambles. Cannot really rate the food as after well over an hour and 10 minutes of waiting we left. The restaurant have acknowledged that our experience was terrible and are trying to redeem themselves by offering us a free meal. We are taking them up on their offer for them to try and redeem themselves so will review again after our next experience. It is good that they are aware of their mistakes and are willing to try and rectify them. So hold fire and lets wait and see.

Starters came within 5 minutes. Main was ready as soon as finished starter. Asked to delay. Could have been in and out within half hour. ( It was hubby’s birthday, so wanted a romantic meal). Food disappointing. Starters small. Main course beef in soy sauce. No vegetables. Very bland. Have visited many times before. This was the worst meal we’ve had there. There was only 4 people upstairs. So don’t understand why we were rushed.

I went for a catch-up lunch with a friend. The service was excellent - attentive but not overwhelming, they were chatty, friendly and helpful. It was a quiet lunchtime, so I'm unsure how it would be when busier, but nothing gave any indication it would be different. We just decided to get some bits to pick on, we shared an appetisers platter for two, which gave us lots of choice and then shared a portion of duck and pancakes. We used up the hoisin sauce quickly with the duck and without asking they provided us with another one. Absolutely plenty for a light lunch and we were full. Would definitely go back based on the food and the service.

Chinese New Year meal at Gars Brighton. Chose the new year menu and service was timely and food good quality. We have been before and would definitely go back. Only thing stopping me giving maximum scores was I was expecting more around a celebration of New Year. Not sure what I was expecting but needed something more memorable to make it stand out compared to any other night.

We booked at 9.30pm as there was availability then, we arrived on time, were shown to a table and a drinks order taken. We then went to order a set menu and were told that we can’t order that as the kitchen was closing , so we asked can we just have it all at once… starters and mains…No! We were essentially allowed a main and get out. So why take a reservation at 9.30 if you are going to heavily limit the menu because the kitchen want to go home? Surely you just take earlier reservations only or make a note when booking that you can have a main only. We ended up having nothing but drinks and leaving (which were charged with a tip 😂). If we had walked in off the street with no booking and they said “we will squeeze you in if you had just a main”, fine. But we booked hours ahead for the slot earliest available!

My family and I have eaten here a number of times and enjoyed it. Quality of food is outstanding. On this occasion the service was very poor. We had to wait 1 hour 15 minutes for our main course to arrive and had a concert to go to. This made the whole experience very rushed. Disappointing

We booked 31/12/21 1:15pm table for 4. and when booking was asked if their was a special occasion. That initial prompting of their interest gave us a pleasant feeling that the restaurant would acknowledge the special occasion. With that in mind, as it was my friends wife’s birthday we ticked yes, birthday, in the ‘appropriate’ box. We arrived with a slice of birthday cake (dairy free)in a box and communicated to the water that seated us if they could perhaps bring it out with a candle at the end of our meal and he left with the cake. A gentleman sitting at the next table to us with his wife, overhearing me, turned to us and said the manager always had something special tucked away for such occasions, he knows him, and he was sure he could do something nice for us. (I was again pleased to hear that and it kept in sinc with their customer service initial interest when booking). the ‘said’ manager came up to me back with the box which had the slice of cake in it, pointed and said “what do you want me to go with this? I explained the above and added, I thought it would be ok seen as they showed interest in booking stage, and after just hearing what the gentleman had just revealed about the manager being greatly accommodating, I enquired “what could he do?” - I further explained the restaurant DID ask if our booking was a special occasion. The manager looked at me blankly and I felt embarrassed and even more awkward and apologetically just asked if they could bring the cake out with a candle. He said ok, left, and also left me red faced. The young waitress serving us was short in her communication and combative when we asked for ideas and help with menu. The food was delicious, bar 2 dishes. We finished eating at 2:30pm. 3:45 no one came to us to ask if we wanted desert and even worse - no sign of the ‘said’ birthday cake. Waitress didn’t know anything about it. The manager had left the restaurant for the afternoon. We finally got the slice on a plate with sparkler
