About this restaurant

  • Good for special occasions
  • Charming
  • Neighbourhood gem
Gees Restaurant & Bar is an independently-owned, restaurant, bar, and terrace set within North Oxford’s famous Grade II listed Victorian conservatory, once home to the Gee family’s greengrocers and floristry, just a ten-minute walk from Oxford’s city centre.

Enjoyed by locals and visitors alike for the past four decades, Gees serves a distinctly Mediterranean-inspired menu using the best seasonal ingredients, simply prepared and expertly cooked by head chef Lee Parsons, featuring regional dishes of Spain, Portugal and Italy.

The private dining space, Gees Gallery, upholds an authentic and organic feel, with bare stone walls, oak panelling and a flash of rich green marble, featuring its own private bar, entrance and art collection. Gees' Secret Garden provides an enchanting al fresco setting for delectable dishes and chic cocktails.

Free parking for two hours is available just a short walk away on Canterbury Road and Bevington Road.

Menu choices we found were not impressive and difficult to choose for a Sunday lunch. Roast chicken and the rabbit ragu were satisfactory but the roast potatoes should have been crispier. The side dish of leeks were not very tender. They did not seem to be very fresh. The puddings lemon soufflé and chocolate "thingy" were delicious. House wine was acceptable but I have tasted better at a lower price level at comparable local restaurants, including at Gees! I have reported this before. At the level of 13 1/2% service charge and the level of food prices I expect linen serviettes and a table cloth and not just bare wood table top with cheap and small paper disintegrating serviettes. You need to up your game! Gees' toilets are better provided than the tables! The "suggested" service charges is preposterous. 13 1/2% of gross food charge (including the VAT) is in reality 16.2% of the net of VAT food/drink charge. Your bill clearly showed the net of food/drink charge, so there was no excuse to charge 13 1/2% on the gross products charge. That is legally "unjust enrichment" and misrepresentation. Unfortunately Gees is not the only culprit in this restaurant practice. Why are you effectively charging VAT on the service charge but not declaring it to HMRC? I let it go this time but not in future. The service provided on Sunday only warranted max 10%, which represents 12 1/2% of net food/drink charges.

Generally good service but the waiter kept squatting down to speak to us as if he was a primary school teacher and we were a couple of 7 year olds. Very off-putting. Food good - reasonable value. Quite a noisy place.

A MUST VISIT! My mum and I went for the first time last night. The waiter we had was so friendly and was happy to spend time with us and recommend some great dishes. The aubergine lasagne and gnocchi were to die for! Will definitely be returning to GEES.
