Gilbey's Bar, Restaurant & Townhouse
Originally an old butcher's shop, we created one of the first wine bars outside London in 1975 - The Eton Wine Bar. After 25 years of success, we changed the name in 2000 to Gilbey's, having recognised that our food had outgrown the original wine bar concept. Our friendly and efficient team look forward to welcoming you in either the stunning Conservatory Restaurant, cosy Front Bar and Townhouse, one of our newly opened Townhouse guest bedrooms or our top floor studio apartment-our exclusive guest accommodation.
Tasty, well presented food
Disappointed bottle of Chablis presented at room temp. Soon sorted.
It’s not cheap!
Was a lovely relaxed dinning experience. From the greeting at the door to the unhurried meal . We had the 3 course menu which was great value for money
As 4 girlfriends who meet monthly for a meal and a catch up, this was a lovely evening out. We had been many years previously before the expansion. Loved the decor, the many different eating areas depending on party size. The food was exceptional and the friendly staff were attentive yet not pushy and had a good knowledge of the menu regarding allergies and intolerance.
Used to be a more comfortable old-style spot without pretensions but good food - it's become a bit try-hard now with high prices and complicated little things scattered all over your plate. The decor is pretty naff. But warm and comfortable. Waitresses need a bit of prodding. Not sure it's worth the prices now and we miss the old family unpretentious atmosphere under Gilbey family.
Ambience, service and food were all well above the standard I had expected. A wonderful lunch.
Great ambience with exemplary service and wonderful food.
I thought this was going to be silver service but it was far from it so I was disappointed. The food was generally nice although I did not enjoy my main course. I felt the muscles were uninspired with an overly onion taste. I couldnt pick up any garlic taste in the very thin sauce. Upon arrival the doors where locked - we where under 2 minutes early and they were not ready to open. We were then told we couldn't have a window table because one had been booked and they didn't know which one the other dinner wanted so they were keeping both for them. This didn't feel very welcoming and I felt rather second class. In my opinion there are many friendly places at this price point.
The food was amazing - I would highly recommend the duck leg - there is an excellent selection of beers and wines and the service was outstanding = really welcoming and super efficient.
Been around for a long time, and a pleasure to come back. service was OK, left in a side room, they forgot us, so my wife forced a table out front, From then on, fabulous. The food was remarkably good considering its touristy Eton.
Highly recommend the place, I will be back....but please do look after the diners in the back rooms.
As always, delicious food and fairly priced. Gilbeys are mindful of food intolerances. The atmosphere for Sunday lunch is relaxing and just what we wanted.
The food was average but nothing special.
The biggest issue was the quality of service. Upon arriving at 6pm for a pre theatre meal we were shown to our table. then the waiter left saying, Oh if you want to hang coats up we have an area back there.
Rather than, Madam / Sir would you like me to take your coats?
Then when drinks were discussed, we asked for some advise about the red wines by the glass?
To which came the astonishing reply, Sorry I have no idea as I don't like red wines!
If it was a Nando's then the above would have been fine but when a bill for 2 comes to £100 Im left less than impressed.
Train your staff on Meet and Greet skills and ensure they know about all of your menu items food and Beverage side.
Nice restaurant. Very friendly staff. Food is good.
Excellent service, food and wine. Had a great afternoon in beautiful surroundings. Will definitely return yet again.
Meal was of a decent standard though just lacks the special element when eating out. Chicken liver pate was nick and the duck leg With braised cabbage was a little bland. Good selection of cheese.
Until our recent visit, we had not visited Gilbey's in Eton for perhaps twenty years when we last lived in the area. In the past we visited frequently. It always used to be very good - no longer - it is now excellent. Clearly much has been spent upgrading and refurbishing the premises and it is now a great place to visit, stay, have meetings or hold events.
The location, just by the pedestrianised bridge is peaceful and pleasant. The staff are welcoming, caring and helpful. The weekday lunch is outstanding value. The wine list is interesting, varied and first class value. Now that one of our daughters lives in South Oxfordshire we hope to be able to visit often.
Good food in pleasant surroundings, served by efficient staff
The best meal we’ve eaten in a long time. Superb!
Comfortable dining space with excellent service too.
The food was good but the service slow and not very friendly or inviting. Staff seemed stressed
. The service and ambiance is excellent. The food is probably the most artistic throughout Windsor and eton. However, there is nothing which is exciting on the menu. The portions are small. Sides are basic. And the food lacks any interesting flavour. I find a la russe better value for money and better flavours. Gilbey’s service and ambience is better. Meat at the parish tops Gilbey’s on every metric for me.
Lovely restaurant. When we sat down the couple next to us asked to move which was more than awkward. Our advice... move the table so that it runs next to the window. That way we won’t be sitting right next to people. But, everything else was just wonderful.
Lovely food and atmosphere. Will return again at some point.
Food was amazing but the service was rather slow which was a shame.
The champagne could have been colder too.
Excellent food and excellent service..lovely atmosphere and a very nice House fizz. If visiting Windsor again will definitely return.
Lovely restaurant and have been many times in the past. Always great food although this time we were a little disappointed with the slow service
An excellent meal as always. Great food and service.
This was my second visit and was excellent. The food is of a very high standard with excellent service. The restaurant is very well located on Eton High Street i would certainly recommend to anyone in the area looking for a special evening
Perfect setting for a Christmas get together. The food was outstanding. Wine selection interesting.
Great dinner, food and wine was fantastic, would be more than happy to come again and highly recommend!
Excellent presentation of food, great wine choices in a modern friendly environment. Service was fantastic too.
We are former Windsorians visiting from Cornwall. We have eaten here many years ago when it was Eton Wine Bar. It has changed and grown so much since then. We had a delightful lunch with friends. Food was excellent, our waiter was so friendly and helpful. We will definitely return when back in town and have recommended you to our other friends already. Thank you for a great Lunch experience.
The food was absolutely fantastic with service to match.
Will come back soon.
We had a lovely birthday lunch here for my husband. Gilbey's is a well run restaurant - despite the service being a bit slow - it was a Friday. The food was lovely, though my husband thought his "pave" of fish a little small. All in all a lovely place for a treat but an expensive one!
Excellent food with a wide choice available. Some interesting flavours and marriages of ingredients. Lovely ambiance, took my Mum and Aunt and they both had the steak - both said it was the best steak they have ever had! The service was excellent. This is the 5th time I have eaten in this restaurant and it has never let me down. Would highly recommend.
Very disappointing- stark lighting, very very noisy cleaning of the cutlery during dinner, split drink, average food for the price. It could be sooooo much better!
Have eaten here in the past, this restaurant has always been excellent in the past and still is, the only criticism l have is that the food has become a bit too twee, there really isn't enough of it on the plate, we actually left still feeling hungry.
We were early evening diners and had the set menu. The food was beautifully presented and very fresh. Looking forward to a return visit.
A really enjoyable lunch with friends. The set lunch menu is outstanding value and the service was superb. I look forward to my next visit already.
Solid and pleasant spot. Food tasty and well presented. Service friendly and very comfortable. Certainly reccommended.
Food and ambience really good and the value for money was fantastic! Just a real shame about the service. I called in advance but no one returned my call. Whilst waiting patiently to be seen to on arrival another couple came in after me and the waitress bee lined straight to them; the patron gestured to me saying I was there before them but regardless she carried on taking their details. Eventually she got to me, I was seated, coat not taken as other patrons. Took a while to get drinks; she said she’d come back and never did! This place could be 5 stars once the hospitality team get put through some training.
We visited to celebrate my husbands birthday. the staff were very welcoming and accommodating. the food was excellent quality, service attentive but not overpowering and value for money considering the quality.
I would certainly recommend to anyone wanting a special meal and I will definitely return again soon.
