The Longest Standing Restaurant In Greektown, Detroit

Brothers Niko and Vasili Dionysopoulos came to America in the late 60’s. They started by selling produce to the Greek churches and then to the businesses in Greektown. They opened Apollo Market on Harper Ave in 1968 till 1970. Then they purchased the Golden Fleece on April 7th 1970. They worked ’till the late 2000’s. Their sons Spero and Yanni took over the family business and remodeled the building and concept after 50 years to continue to give Metro Detroit the authentic Greek experience and hospitality. Now they’re reopening the staple grocery and bakery next door bring the latest and finest Greek imports.

The Dionysopoulos family would like to thank all of you for these amazing 50 years and looking forward to the next 50!

Wonderful experience from start to finish: my family hadn’t visited since my father passed in 1989, and the Golden Fleece surpassed our fond memories. Like the Greektown neighborhood, the restaurant’s interior has been spruced-up but the food is still the very best Greek cuisine on this side of the Atlantic. The service was excellent: the personable waitstaff seemed to anticipate our every need. Kudos to the fine stewardship of the traditional cuisine especially the taramasalata and the gyro dishes. We’ll be back!

Cocktail was mostly ice. Small wine pours. Tables are very small. Servers overwhelmed on a Saturday concert night. Restaurant is loud unless you sit it the back. Saganaki was delicious but pita with it was not good.

Made an online reservation for four people. We arrived a little early and were taken to a VERY small table, way in the back of the restaurant. Even though the table had four sides with four chairs, it was the same size table as the two-top tables in the main part of the restaurant. The other four-top tables in the restaurant were two of the tables we were sat at, pushed together. It would have been nice to have two tables to eat at with more room at our table and to not be sat right next to the back door that was constantly used by restaurant staff to go to the restaurant next door. Food was okay, but not fantastic. Service was okay as well. Because we were so far back in the restaurant, it took the server FOREVER to bring needed items to our table.

I enjoyed the experience, but it was less “authentic” than I expected. Lighting the cheese dishes seemed like a big deal. Meanwhile, we never got our halloumi cheese appetizer. Meatballs were overcooked and dry. Still and all, I recommend it, but lower your expectations.

Terrible service for Father’s Day’s- slow, inconsistent and full of mistakes. We asked for separate bills at the beginning but the waitress got it wrong 3 times. Took 1/2 hour just to get drinks …It also took almost an hour to get our food while the restaurant was less that 1/2 full. We were forced to pay a 20% service charge when the services deserved no tip at all. We have been there before and the service was ok but today it was the worst we’ve seen. Not sure we’ll be back.

Hadn't been to Golden Fleece in a bit, but glad we returned. On a busy night with a Bruno Mars concert downtown, the staff was on point. Food was wonderful. Great atmosphere. Definitely will be returning sooner than later. I go to a lot of restaurants and have to wait for table, food takes long time, staff isn't nice, etc. This was the opposite. Congrats to Golden Fleece for knowing how to properly run a restaurant.

Mothers Day luncheon was the occasion. Food and drinks. The seasonal cocktails, which were great. I would recommend it. Side note, 20% tip is rolled in, but there were no problems with service. I go there a couple times a year, and it is always good choice.
